What oil should I use?

Took a look at oil level today and I reckon it needs a top up, what oil would you guys recommend.

I am on holiday at present and not near a dealer so it would need to be something I can buy at Halfrauds.

Worth reading that if you get 5 mins.

(Most important bit of that thread. Is that the oil says its Approved rather than meets VW 504.00  standard. VW also stress this in bold in the hand book)


IIRC this is what i have  :undecided:
Castrol Edge 5W30

VW spec is 504.00 for petrol engines. This is the latest VW Long Life spec oil: SAE 5W30.
The last time I was in my local Halfords they had no 5W30 fully synthetic oil.

Will toddle off to Halfords tomorrow and see if they've got the Castrol stuff, if not can only hope to find a car accessory store and see if they have any.

As ever this forum and you guys always come up with the right help and advice.

Fool proof way of getting the correct oil is to buy it from your local dealer

I also find their oil is cheaper than anywhere else  :smiley:

Aye, from memory a litre of the good stuff is about £10-£13 depending what discount the dealer gives you. It was actually castrol stuff they sold me in the dealers  :smiley:

Halfords do a few engine oils you don't have to use Castrol.   :wink:

0W/30 Oils

Costco used to sell a three pack of the Castrol Edge stuff for a very reasonable amount ( 3 x 1 litre bottles).. worked out about £7 a bottle I think.  I'll check next time I'm in the Leeds store this week. 

It was the genuine VW approved oil BTW ... same as you get at the dealers with 504.00 VW on the label
