I have just done 1100 miles and am thinking of an oil change at 2000 miles as I drive in stop start traffic every day. Would you consider this a good idea?
I am intending to use Motul Specific 5W30 504 00-507 00 which costs £50.10 for 5 litres and is specifically for VAG cars.
I wonder which make of oil VW use?

PS: The other engine oil which is highly recommended is Silkolene.

Well many years ago they used to do a first service on new cars at around 500 miles, this was just an oil and filter change to remove any metal that got flushed down after the engine was built. Todays cleaning methods are more refined. I believe that VW may run the engine on a test bed to make sure everything is ok, the oil maybe replaced then or they have a different oiling system.
Sorry but I disagree with these longlife oils. Oil gets contaminated with carbon as part of the combustion process. This carbon is filtered by the filter but it still gets pumped around the engine. Now the VW service interval is 10k or 12 months which ever comes first. I think there is a longer life service of 20k which to me is ridicules.
You can change you oil at 2000 miles if you want too and providing you use an oil that covers the VW spec (read the handbook) you should be ok.

i was also looking to to change my oil with motul oil when i reach 1500 miles

I'm quite lucky in that there is a garage next door to me. The owner drives a Golf R and is an enthusiast. He will change my engine oil and filter at 5,000mls. VW will service at 10,000. So plan to change the oil and filter every 5,000mls

Thanks all.
Will go for an oil and filter change at 2k miles as all my driving is stop-start in Central London every day. Will use Motul Specific 5W30 504 00 and purchase it from www.powerenhancer.co.uk

Hello long time  Was stuck in London last week due to the ash in the air. Got the tube into Earls Court for a cheap hotel for the night and went out for a beer. Got caught up with some lads out for a night. Heavy session but a good night. You could have been there

Yes, a good idea, I'd decided to have extra oil changes as I also do a lot of stop start town driving. Will get it done at dealer at about 2K miles, then at service next March. Yes, you can do it yourself easily enough, but then you have to dispose of the old oil and filter, which is a pain in the neck for me as my nearest disposal site is several miles away. Will probably continue with this and have 2 oil changes every 12 months.
-
i have 7800 miles now and @ 10,000 miles i will be sending it to Blackstone Laboratories for analysis. So far cars tested @ 5,000 are coming back that the oil is fine and can last for another 5k. I drive my car HARD so it will be an interesting find.
-
I use the castrol edge 5W30 504 00-507 00 spec which is a very good oil .
ps another is quantum oil also 504 spec longlife which is what Vw dealerships use.

hi guys just had a little look on my oil levels to find my dipstick twisted at the bottom, the section where you read the levels. is this normal? and also is it safe to drive when its like this?
-
Its twisted on my diesel.
I had my oil light on the other week and went to fill it up, what a nightmare.
Its virtually impossible to tell where the oil is up to. The dipstick isn't the greatest design I've seen.
-
thank god for that i actually tried bending it straight
-
Slight twist in it to lock. Notice it is also very flexible.
No problem reading mine today. However, you do need good light.
Car has not used a drop of oil in 1100 miles. Oil also looks very clean. Long may it continue.
-
I think that was the problem with mine, the oil was that clean I could barely see it. That was after 8000 miles.

Either that, or you withdrew too slowly and it all dripped off!

7000 miles and not used a drop.

You were not agressive at all. Promise.
I am having the oil + filter change this Saturday. Using my own oil Motul Specific 504 00 5W30 and so I just pay for labour, filter and plug (not butt!). VW charge approx £14 per litre for their oil and the car requires 4.7 litres. I bought the Motul for just shy of £45 for 5 litres which makes it £9 per litre.
Doing the sums: if VW had done the lot it would have cost around £120. They have reduced the overall cost by approx £70 (cost of their oil) which makes it approx £50 for the service. Not bad me thinks.
Therefore, total cost to me is £95 using my own oil.
PS: I will also be pouring 500ml Boron Motor Silk into the engine. :lipsrsealed:

Steve, you are so closeby, and I've never come across you.

I think what he means is the dip stick is very poor on the mk6?? mine is getting bent already!!
-
I don't have the part number of the oil filter to hand but if you open the bonnet it stares straight at you and i think you can see the number from what i remember.
If you changed your own oil it would be even cheaper still

Eh? It was myself that said it was twisted and poor to read but I had to add some oil to it today and realised it wasn't twisted at all. It must have been either my daughters or wife's car that had a twisted dipstick.
-
this worries me...i have a twisted dipstick

Anyone have the part number for the oil filter for the GTI?
Thanks
I've had a look in the well known part catalogue and it says oil filter 1.8/2.0ltr 4 cylinder CBFA, CCTA, CCZB, CDAA engine numbers - 06J 115 403 C - £16.86.
Or 2.0ltr 4 cylinder CDLC, CDLF engine numbers - 06D 115 562 - £16.27 thats filter element with gasket so thats an element not a canister. Someone has just said the diesels have an element. In fact the specific diesel filter is cheaper still.
Of course if your changing the oil and filter yourself then you would be better of getting the genuine filter from the dealer. I know they are expensive but for the extra cost its not worth arguing over warranty problems with the engine.

Looks normal to me. I've had a few cars with a twisted dipstick just like that.
What model is it from?
-
MK6 GTI had it for 2 weeks yesterday

That's probably because yours is diesel.

Back to topic.
Thought I'd share this for better or for worse.
Mileage 1140 miles.
Had an oil change with Motul VW Specific 5W30 504 00, new filter, plug + Boron Silk engine additive + Boron Silk fuel additive to full tank of BP Ultimate 97RON. Done at my VW dealership.
Running like a dream. So very smooth now & probably due to new oil in engine.
The other stuff will take 500 to 1000 miles to be felt I am told.
Ahhh!
PS: Also collected my new Ed30 Manual shift. Looks ver' nice.

Get it fitted later in the week and post pictures.
Now, and you won't believe this, maybe I prefer the one already in the car due to the red bits on it!
I am really becoming a James Gould copycat.
