Post by: am1w on 19 May 2010, 20:55
I've just got in touch with these guys as I want to have my roof wrapped in shiny black or anthracite.
Help or information on where I can have this done in London, please?

Why is everyone so angry today!

caistor_bmx has a great sense of humour and it is nice to have young people giving us some perspective.

Back to topic:
A shiny glassy black roof on a red GTi will look excellent as shown on the Excessee (?) concept. It would also look excellent on a white car. This is my opinion and taste, good or bad.
My request is for some information where I can have this done, please.
Your postive and negative opinions are noted and are very much appreciated.
May I also thank you for your timely responses to this thread.

No not really, are you sure you want to get it done?

I'd wait until you've seen another with it's roof done, then you will know if you like it or not.

It's a big mod to do especially if you dont like it when it's finished, go to one of the shows and have a look round (GTI International next month is a good one)

These two companies seem to be the ones to go to:
Carbonskin charges from £190 for a roof wrap.
Racoon seems to have a good website.
Saw a gold wrapped Mini Cooper today. It was truly horrible.
Will take a picture next time I see it.

I know a company in Barking (East London), who do wrapping, called 247 Autos, but their website is down for some reason.

www.247autos.co.uk

R/O 386 RIPPLE ROAD
HARROW ROAD, BARKING, ESSEX IG11 7QZ, United Kingdom
0800 781 8995

Tinted my windows there, although I have to say it's not exactly a posh garage - more like a shed with some equipment...

Lots of people there have done vinyl wraps on their roofs with very positive results.

No one batted an eye lid when the M3 came with a dark (all be it carbon fibre) roof out the factory.

No one batted an eye lid when the M3 came with a dark (all be it carbon fibre) roof out the factory.

Probably because it's proper carbon fibre, with the purpose of being lighter...not a fake carbon print sticker, or a black sticker that only looks remotely carbon like from 100 paces.

I you have carbon and want to shout about it...fine by me.
If you have fake carbon fibre or a black sticker...not so fine.

Personally, I'd rather have carbon painted, as you get the benefits without the dodgy scene-queen/ricer/chav looks.

This thread probably needs moving out of the mk6 sectoin to get the best response.
Not many people will spend £30k on a brand new Golf and put a big sticker on the roof, however the yoofs in the mk2 and mk3 and maybe even the mk4 guys will be more heavily into this sort of styling. Come to think of it there are a few mk5 guys with black roofs too.
Maybe ask on mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum

I was admiring the press shots of the Polo GTI earlier and that had the panoramic sunroof with half black roof. Looked
Title: Re: Wraps
Post by: am1w on 21 May 2010, 19:10
It would be best to spray the roof, but this might affect the car's resale value.
On the other hand, a vinyl wrap is reversible, cheaper and no one would know the difference.
Title: Re: Wraps
Post by: Exonian on 21 May 2010, 19:34
A wrap would be much better than painting the roof.
With painting you'd need a good clean edge between the colours plus you'd have to have the whole roof, a pillars and hatch area re-laquered. Not an easy job to get perfect first time on a newish car.
A wrap is just that, stick, trim and remove if you've f**ked up. Much better.
I think the mk5 boys use a company called racoon or similar.
SteveP will know.

I think you should go for it. Red and white are the best colours for this mod so you're half way there.
If you don't like it all you've got to do is peel it back off again. Or in your case pay someone else to peel it back off again....

Will the paintwork on the roof get damaged if the wrap is peeled off?
My concern is that due to paint issues on VWs, that this might be a possibility.

It shouldn't, especially if the paintwork is in good condition before the wrap.

You just heat it up, peel it off, and use a solvent to get rid of the remaining sticky mess.

That surely must damage the paintwork?

You have a very salient point there. I have spoken to someone today in the know and he has informed me that a good and experienced company like Racoon would already have the wrap pre-cut to grat accuracy using CAD machine to avoid this very thing!

My vinyl was pre cut and then trimmed on the car. Hairline mark but once the vinyl is on you can't see them. TBH though it was either the hairline cracks or more injuries from stones than a Palestine in Israel. fantastic job though.

Definately.
If people are that bothered about stone chips, then they should just get the leading edges covered by Armafend/Defendall or similar...and not have to worry again.
That stuff works a treat.
