Title: Miles per tank?
Post by: p3eps on 14 May 2010, 07:11
I'm sure this has probably been done before, but it'll be interesting to see what the regulars get.
I'm not talking about MPG - I'm talking about how many miles you get out of your tank when you fill up until you refill.
No diesel comments please

I put in £63 of Optimax a couple of days ago which was almost exactly 50L of petrol.  On my clock I had 277 when I reset it.
About 200 of those miles were driven round the highlands with a pretty heavy foot.  The rest were start / stop town miles.

Yep I have had 450 out of mine also. But like you said 500 is do-able. Would require some long motorway journeys though :nerd:

320 odd miles on a usual tank which is me driving hard.  on a week where i'm doing motorway driving it will push 400 miles, but this is not my norm.  its basically every 6 days that i have to fill up if i don't have any other journeys to do (which is not helpful and useless information!!)

4 laps of the Ring was what I got out of the last tank full of fuel (78 euro's worth of 100 octane fuel) in Germany, this was about 80 miles with cool down and coffee runs

Computer average said 9.2 mpg

350 to 370 from the tank, usually.  Have had more and less.  I have a complete record, I'll fish ot out and post it.

I can't believe anyone is getting over 400 miles, unless it's at a steady 50 on the motorway, and what sort of a life is that?

If I get 290 miles from a tank I will die from shock and I cannot have that happen for the sake of all the people who really love and adore me on this forum!

as per the trip counter which was pressed when i tanked the car, I managed to get 327 miles from full to the first 'bong' - that's driving it on "running-in" style driving, trying to keep the revs down and on mainly town roads with stop/start at traffic lights, junctions and stuff. i think i may have even been driving on basic Asda semi-skimmed
I think after the engine has been run in, it will get a bit more efficient.

I think 400 miles could be quite easy as long as you
- use motorway at constant speed in 6th gear and minimal use of brake
- don't carry fat passengers
- turn off the heater
- watch the tyre pressures

Yes it is pretty boring to drive like that, but with fuel prices sky high and looking like they are on the increase, saving pennies now will all add up. That's the way I see it anyway. I guess if you do want to floor it the odd time that's up to you.

taking is easy revs up to 2.5\3k only - based on a few trips about town, a couple of dual roads \ motorways and cruise set at 65mph I get on average 360 - 370 from a full tank.

Did a couple of long motorway drives with cruise set at 68mph last week and got 380. I was supprised that a few people said 400miles+ for a tank as to me that sounds like motorway constant 55mph, down hill, with a good tail wind to get that. I guess it could be possible but would have to be very very careful.

Not average. Just mpg on a known route. 24 miles, 50mph few stops and no traffic.
Average per tank is 380ish as I like to have a bit of fun now and again.

Lowest mpg was below 20 when I was 'testing' the bluefin.

When I leave work, my mpg for the first 3 miles on the Euston/Marylebone Road is 11 mpg in stop/start traffic at an average speed of 9 mph! Then I hit the Westway (A40), give it some wellie, do 50+++mph and it rises to 22 mpg.
Eventually, by the time I reach home 8 miles and 35-40 mins later from the start of my miserable journey, I am getting 25 mpg!
But this is way, way better than the vile underground and is worth it IMO.

I averaged 30mpg for the last tank full. all commute nothing more.
My journey into work is quite early so i can average by the computer near 37 but on the way home its rush hour hell and were all fighting for a place on the bridges back over the tyne so mpg takes a huge dive.

This morning to and from and about town - mix of 30\40 and 50mph roads got av of 34mpg on the computer.
Have just done run to B&Q by manchester which was a short trip to motorway on A road then about 20mins om motorway - 39mpg.
I did a longer motorway to reading at about 23:00 the other week so bugger all traffic and tootled at about 60 mpg when at the tail end of running it in and the computer to show an ave of just a tad over 40mpg which was cool (never expected to see that!).

One point is that you can inadvertantly manipulate the figures by how you control taking foot of the gas when down hill \ slowing to a stop etc as then the current mpg can hit 70-100mpg which will impact the ave mpg figure - so give you a higher reading. So guess the ave mpg reading comes down to how you drive. But - in real terms using the push button reset tip - getting 400+ miles from a tank seems nuts and would need a very very

Seen a couple of these GTDs now parked up in Leeds City Centre and I must say they look very nice. It'll still sound like a tractor though first thing in the morning which is why I abandoned diesel cars for the GTi.
I managed to just about scrape 400 miles out of the beast's last tankful but it's usually getting iffy around 360 ish. The fact that I might have got an extra 150 miles out of a GTD doesn't interest me in the slightest - I know which car I will have enjoyed more!!!

Since I do a 60 mile daily round trip on the motorway the car does 400 miles "just about" with me driving entireley normally i.e. booting it where I can and then doing a steady **mph on the motorway. I don't have to make a point of trying o get 400 miles out of it.

Time for me to eat some humble pie.... I've just got 441 on a full tank.
Long motorway drive Manchester to North London (just inside M25) - a little bit of town driving then back up north.
Set cruise control to 69 there and back - no jams but a couple of 50\60mph roadworks but easy drives!
Computer stated ave mpg was about the 44mpg mark.
Very impressed as no way thought i'd ever get above 400 miles for a tank - but wow 441 at 70mph is good!!!

GTi mk6 manual - 5 door (also had air con switched on for the duration. For the m way drives - used cruise control for basically 99% of the time).
Had a fair bit of weight in the back (pram \ large case baby stuff etc etc) and had to fold down one of the rear seats to accomodate.
Thought we'd take the GTI to see how it was on a longish trip - very impressed fantastic drive, much better on m way than the mk5 was regarding noise levels etc.

It reinforced one thing to me - could never buy another car without cruise control.

I love it when the miles range goes up by 5 during a journey (using Tesco 99 Ron Super Unleaded and doing 70mph all the way); which means time for a quick blast on the roads.  (Yeah, I know, with a GTI I shouldn't be worried about petrol consumption.)

From my experience, I've also found the onboard CPU miles range fairly accurate through sensible driving, even down to the last 15 miles in the tank.

Most speedo dials are a couple of MPH lower than the GPS speed.  Its to give you a little more tollerance for speed cameras, and also to allow for your tyres wearing.

Right guys I drove from Motherwell today to Le Mans in preparation for this weekends race.

Got from Motherwell to Dover on a single tank. That's around 500 miles. Average speed was around 60 mph with some average 50mph sections and a couple of blasts to make up for the average 50mph sections

And strangely enough I had a thought... let me know what you think.

All the unemployed people in the UK generally have nothing to do right... well instead of just giving them a handout... they should be given the money in exchange for some community work. If all the unemployed people went out to do a couple of hours a week helping at roadworks then we would cut down on unemployment and on roadworks....

Posted this in the diesel topic so figured I'd post a copy here too for the petrol believers:

My car runs on special diesel. It's a bit more refined. I think the name is petrol or something.

Anyway I got 525 miles out my tank from full to empty. There was nothing left in the tank as I pulled into the station. During my journey I averaged 65 ish with one blast up to 135 kmph

I know we have a bit of rivalry between diesel and petrol but my car is putting out 270 bhp and 300 lbs of torque. I'm getting maybe 70% of the mpg that a 170 bhp diesel gets. The diesel is putting out about 65% of the power of my car? When looked at that way I'd say the GTI is still a pretty good car for the performance.

And if you want to argue with that go look at a Focus RS owner's mpg claims... yet the GTI can match that thing for pace.
