HIya all.........i KNOW its a GTI forum but i REALLY am undecided.......i have yet to test drive either but have an 05 plate 120d and find it an EXCELLENT and balanced drive. Great steering and chassis balance.....BUT a MK6 GTI is appealing to me........BUT....so is a 123d........has anyone driven both???? I know Diesel vs petrol isnt exactly comparable but on paper they offer similar pace. I also know its RWD vs FWD but the GTI i KNOW is a tidy, balanced FWD performer so i need advice folks!!!!! Will you have as much fun in a MK6 GTI FWD or a 204BHP RWD Diesel?????????????? Thanks!!!!!
-
We have two cars in our house. A petrol-engined MKV and a diseasel-powered BMW 1-series. I drove the 123d before we got ours.
Ok, yes, on certain roads/speeds you can ride the wave of torque, but the extra 150kg+ in the nose really hurts the balance/handling on a B-road blast.
However, if embarrassing Civic Type R drivers on a motorway is your thing, then yeah, go for the BMW.
BUT, I'd go for the GTI! Free-revving petrol is the way to go! It is reasonably economical, after all... :afro:

That was my dilemma - 123d or Gti - I did consider the 135i but the 123d makes more sense than the 135i (an aside...the coupes look better than the convertible) - the Gti is an icon, the 1-series BMW is not - the Gti is more practical for families with kids - I felt that the Golf Gti was better value than the 1-series and I assume that the Gti will hold its value better than the 1-series. The Golf Gti has been around for decades, tried and tested - and continually developed - whereas the 1-series is relatively new. I guess the other deciding factor is that I've never had a BMW, never been a BMW person - the brand just isn't me. Something has always stopped me buying a BMW - IMO, and no disrespect to BMW owners, it's the default choice, it's for people who don't have enough imagination to come up with another choice of car - that's probably rubbish and I do appreciate that they are ahead of Merc in the driveability/fun factor of their cars and the fuel/diesel economy.
I've probably upset a lot of people - unintentional and I'm probably talking rubbish. Sorry.
-
thanks!!!! im swaying towards the GTI......BUT im not against BMW as a brand and i will admit that a RWD car, even a Diesel is much more fun as a rule. Kicking the back end out when roads are quiet, etc.....and BMWs do this rather excellently.............I LOVE both VWs AND BMWs.....i STILL cannot decide..................
-
Well, if you're used to having something styled like a dog turd on your drive I can't throw the looks issue at you, so all I can recommend is you drive both and make up your mind.
The GTI feels a bit flat feeling in the mid range but is otherwise very accomplished and user friendly.
-
I didn't drive the 123d so I can't really say too much - I did drive the Gti and I loved it - it's so personal and your own practical considerations will be part of the 'weighing it all up' thing - have you driven both? I think the Golf Gti is more of an all-round, grown up, established icon of a car and that the impracticalities and space limitations of the 1-series would have annoyed me after a while - the 1-series coupe is a bit small, a bit 'squat', dare I say too much of a toy? You've got to drive them both - no-one can make the decision for you....good luck...

Only you can decide what is best for you by having a test drive of both cars.
BMW's are good cars but with the winters we have I would never consider a rear wheel drive car , mind I live up north.
-
thanks guys!!!! a test drive of both is needed.....although my mind has wandered into considering the 130 m sport instead of a 123d?????? anyone have any knowledge of these?????? Exonian, thats my problem wth the GTI....i think the cost should provide you with more than 207bhp......its well known the setup can handle more........

Extra 500 notes gives it that much more........(queue the nay sayers)

the Gti isn't meant to be a Focus RS - it an all-round package, it's about the driving experience (I believe - haven't got mine yet) - the quoted 0-62 is 6.9 secs but many people suggest that it's more like 6.5 - there'll be cars that are sub-6 secs that wont be as good a drive as the Golf Gti - again, drive them both and then decide - you can't make an informed decision without test drives.
-
lol exonian!!!!!! and how much more on insurance and how much more if tampering with output invalidates warranty though???? the idea of tuning a GTI 6 is appealing, but how do insurance companies look at it???????
-
I'm not tuning mine but I acknowledge that many people do - you don't need to be thinking about tuning before test driving both cars - you might find the Gti to be great as it is...
-

All I can say to that is; it depends on how honest you are!!!
Insurance varies wildly from company to company. Mind don't charge a huge premium to me as I've been with the company for years, yet to new customers they won't even offer cover!
As for VW, it depends on your dealer and your honesty.....oh, and a dash of luck too!

you can do this in the GTI!

this i agree with 100%, its much quicker than 6.9 seconds

6.3 SECS 0-60 as tested by VW Driver if my memory serves.......Yet the STANDARD Mk5 was quoted as 6 seconds dead??????!!!!!!! by SAME magazine?????? is that TRUE????? NO way............

i can only go on personal experience, and my mk 6 is a sh1t load quicker than my mk 5!
-
Couple of hundredths or even tenths of a second can be because of so many variables, weather, temperature, shoes the driver was wearing, tyres, manufacturing tolerances of the car, etc. etc. etc.
-
^^
all very true i agree. but i drive all the cars i've had hard, and its defo quicker than the mk5. but to answer the original question, i would go for the gti every day of the week over the bmw
-
bottom line - it ticked all the boxes and I had a lot of boxes! Unless we're talking about cars for £50K-plus, it's the only car for me. I don't see anything on the road which makes me think 'should I have gone for that?' If the Gti is what it is cracked up to be, it'll be the perfect car for me.

Sorry James, but I feel sorry for your GTI when you get it. You WILL find something wrong with it, or something you dont like or something you wish was different or you could change. Thats the kind of person you are. It's not a bad thing, its just that you're mental.

you know me, do you, Kev? No, you don't....and, of course, I don't know you - it's a huge loss for you and a complete and utter irrelevance for me.
-
I do quite like the 1 series BMW. RWD and well built with great balanced drive.
But comparing a 123d to a GTI?? seriously!?! I woudl take the 130i over the GTI but wouldnt even consider the 123d.

All BMW 1 Series look as if they came out of a toothpaste tube or are they more lizard-like?

The hatch ones definately resemble a crocodiles head! My missus has the cabro version that looks ok (for girls!) and I quite like the coupe...

Still feel  when I see them.

thanks for all the input guys!!!!! BUT without wishing to be snooty at ALL, i know the 1 series 5 door especially divides opinion on styling and looks, it has rather grown on me across the years and i rather like it now!!!!! its different from the norm.....and please forgive me i LOVE GTIs mk5 and 6 epsecially....but they are not exactly beautifully handsome machines either?????? Solid, sporting and agressive hatchback would be my personal description. Thats NOT a knock at them BTW because i love these cars.....just maybe think a 130 m sport would be a more satisfying drive?????????????????????
-
Only way is for you to go and test drive both. Everyone has different views on things, only you can findout whats best for you.
-
true snoopy......very true. the time will be SOON............i like both cars for different reasons.....and maybe the closest competitor in the 1 range is the(now obsolete) 130 m sport to the GTI???????????? I shall see..........and i KNOW RWD is USELESS in winter/snow!!!!!!!! IF i take the BM path.....winter tyres will be purchased this year......
-
so, Rich, go the whole hog - 135i - that said, the brilliance of BMW here is the 123d - sub 7 seconds to 60 and that MPG! the 123d is the top of the diesel 1 series and the 135i is the top of the petrol 1's - I reckon that if you were to get the 130i, you'd be saying 'I should have.....' but drive the cars!!!
-
135i's are only available in the Coupe, not the 5 door hatchback :nerd:
-

Winter wheels / tyres are a must. My missus' BMW 120i Cabro never moved for about 3 weeks over Christmas as it was totally stuck in our car park!
The 120i is absolutely guttless - so definately don't go for one of them! I kindly had a shot of a Smart For Two for a couple of months while the owner was out of the country, and it could almost take the 120i in a straight line!!!
As Snoopy said - test drive them back to back and see which one you prefer. Everyone has different tastes - so its the only way you'll be able to tell.
-
I'm talking about the coupe
-
James, my point is he is comparing the 130 against a GTI - both hatches not coupe's. Im guessing he wants the practicality of a hatchback
-
yeah its hatchback practicality im after PLUS a great fun drive when the mood takes......the 130 WILL become a cult hero i feel especially as its a 6 cylinder, 3 litre engine in a RWD car of that size....and it CAN return 35+ mpg when driven sensibly......But the GTIs are no slouches either and have more interior space and comfort.....OH i DONT KNOW!!!!!!!!! test drive, test drive!!!!!! lol.

that BM forum bit is interesting!!!!!! they WILL say have a 1 series though!!!!!! ive owned a mk5 GTI AND own a 120d at present...and i WILL say that obviously i miss the revvy petrol of the VW....but it DIDNT get its power down EVEN in the dry as well as the RWD 120d does. And id say that the Bm WILL corner flatter and smoother whereas the MK5 GTI would start understeering and scrabbling for grip.....BUT the VW felt more planted on less than perfect surfaces and inspired confidence to push it to the limit more.....IM JUST IN A CATCH 22.........
-
My experiences with 1 series (not driven any) two guys at work own a 120d M Sport 3dr hatch and a 118d SE 5 door, both look a bit boring (interior is just to the point). One has had a wheel sensor replaced (6K on the clock), the other an entire steering rack because a sensor went, luckily just under warranty (18K miles on the clock) and also had to have the filter changed in the washer bottle for not using BMW washer fluid £90 that cost, not a warranty option. The coupe also looks like a hair dressers car, but looks better than the hatches. Neither could get anywhere in the snow, didnt matter how little, and they always ran away as soon as it started. I was amazed that it didn't move in a flat car park. My GT TDI mk5, 4yr old, 60K on the clock and whats went wrong. A seat airbag wiring fault under the passenger seat and the left front speaker went. Headunit replaced. All under warranty. Also add on the cost of the same options to a 1 series and you soon find it costs more that a Golf. Also BMWs labour rates are higher for servicing e.t.c.
Its up to you.

One looks like a hearse, the other like a fat Geordie bird.
-
thanks for your incisive comments Mr Nosh!!!!! Thats helped make my mind up now!!!! LOL.

One looks like a hearse, the other like a fat Geordie bird.
Still getting flash backs of your childhood nosher??

Hilarious!

Watch your mouth  my very best friend is a 'fat Geordie bird' she's lovely and sounds just like Cheryl cole, such a pity she doesn't look like her too   But Geordies are the nicest people on the planet after us Scots of course
Gizzy
-
DOES EGBERT NOSH REALLY EXIST????? he seems to take the opposite view just for the sake of it....or comment in a totally random way ie fat geordies birds and hearses????? WHAT??????? so HIS GTI is a fat geordie bird and a 1 series is a hearse?????? CRAZY..........
-
I like my cars built for speed and my women built for comfort, i.e. 'fat'.
Maybe Nosher does too?  :lipsrsealed:
Get back on topic............
