Frog, this is what yours would have looked like if you had actually ordered silver.
Kev, okay, it looks like a Diesel, I apologise
Everyone else, at least you won't be moaning at me for having black wheels any more (for the time being at least).
Adieu

Damb i really like that.

Awesome. Best wheels in the world for the GTI!

Thats funny, and Iconic status
The thing i have against the scirocco wheels is the offset is different i just don't know yet without a bit of calcualtion what change in the forces acting on the suspension, suspension angles, tire ware this may have.

Hmm, thanks to those of you who replied with the positive comments! They actually look better again in the flesh as they really fill the wheel arches and have a slight dish to make them look really muscular.
For those that don't like them, not much I can say about that is there?
For those that think GTIs should stay with GTI wheels all their life, fair enough, I see your point BUT people have been modifying GTIs in the UK alone for over 30 years. I like mine to look as tasteful as I can manage but identifying it as my GTI not some posh nobs company car.
I'm a big Monza Shadows fan, however mine didn't come with them so I decided I'd go off on my own tangent tryint out different things to see which I like best. If my car had come with them, maybe I'd have just put some 10mm spacers on the rear and left them as is. Maybe not.....
And as for Snoopy, you pose an engineering based question rather than aesthetics. You can definately feel the difference between these and the 18'' Monzas I've just taken off. The steering feels fractionally chunkier. Over potholes they feel much the same. I've only driven a couple of fairly gentle miles on them so far so can't comment too much on feel etc.
But, like Monsieur Grenouille my car isn't a daily driver so the wear and tear issue won't hopefully be too evident too soon. I don't have a habit of keeping cars long anyway, but you never know, with the way car prices are going I won't be rushing to a dealership with my debit card anytime soon.

What's the difference in offset? I bet it's only small.
It shouldn't wear the tyres any differently as the gemotery remains the same. The only thing it will do it add a small amount of extra stress on ball joints, wheel bearings and track rod ends. The % of extra stress will be very small and likely make no difference to the life of the parts whatsoever.
Always felt the Monza wheels were amongst the poorest of the standard GTI alloys since the MKI. They just don't look sporty, they look best on a beetle

Horney, the width and offset of GTI wheels is 7.5J and 51mm. The Skyrocket uses Passat style suspension (Corrado style) and has 8J rims with 41mm ET. I previously had 8 inch wide BBS wheels on there with 44mm offset. The Scirocco wheels feel a bit different to those even despite being very similar dimensions. I think they may possibly be slightly heavier than the BBSs. They're made in Turkey too, which surprised me. :nerd:

Looking at those ET figures the new rims are well within tolerance of factory components. Your'e not going to get any issues with extra wear occuring.
I bet they are heavier than the BBS though.

That's interesting. As I insisted that the Monzas be ripped off and hidden in a dark cellar before delivery lest the general public behold their ugliness, I have only driven my GTI with the Interlagos. I agree that the extra offset does give the car a purposeful stance.
-
maybe a daft question but what have you done with the previous 4 sets of wheels ? isn't it costing you a fortune ?

Set no.1 the originals are kept for when the car gets p/x'ed back to the dealer
Set no.2 were 18'' BBSs I had fitted to my mk5, just sold them
Set no.3 were Monza IIs I bought for an experiment, never fitted them and sold them on again
Set no.4 are Black Detroits, quite fond of those, may sell 'em or may keep 'em for winter use
Set no.5 is the reason we're on this thread
Fortune? Too much money probably but I'm a bargain hunter and none were that expensive. I don't exactly live a rock'n'roll lifestyle either so I can justify it to myself. Justifying it to the wife is another matter.......

Why didnt you just buy a Roc if you wanted a lookalike ?
-
I very nearly did. Two teenage kids to fit in the back plus occasional OAPs to ferry around put paid to that. My wife, kids and myself would have all chosen the Rocco otherwise. My first ever car was a Scirocco mk1. My youngest said he wanted a Scirocco with a number plate that read '' FAT ASS'' on it

Lets just say the ''conversation'' I was on the receiving end of when she found my email correspondence to the seller wasn't a pretty sight!!!
Dunno her problem was to be honest as it was me that had to do the hard work clearing room for yet another set in the garage.

Hah, look what I just found on the other mk6 forum!! Caught in the act there young miss:
Hi all I am now awaiting delivery of my new mark 6 but must admit I am not totally convinced on the 18" monza shadows I've ordered was wondering if any of you could recommend a decent set of alloys to set my car apart from the other gti's I may see around. :jumping:
-
Why didnt you just buy a Roc if you wanted a lookalike ?
Err, well, we've got 7 kids for a starter...

Where do you keep them in your GTD ? The boot ? Erm, sorry your GTI, was the wheels that put me off there.

And another cat comes out of the bag on the same day!
You know what?
The 18" Monzas are great looking wheels but do not suit my Tornado Red GTi.
As I can't change the car or want to spend extra money on wheels, I just have to accept this sad situation or slash my wrists! But first I will check my life insurance policy!
PS: I know I have left myself wide open!
Any more gonna come out of the closet?
Admit it guys and girls, GTI is what's in the car's DNA not what alloys it's sat on. There's no point saying that a GTI without Monzas loses its iconic status when you see a dozen TDIs a day running round on Monza replicas.

If I'm feeling generous, they get to ride in the Espace. Otherwise, it's the back of the Transit - the equivalent of the 'naughty step' in our household!
-
Exo:I love the Monzas and the GTi. I was just having an off moment when I previously posted. Call it PMT(?)!
Would not have it any other way.
Roll on wheel set No.6! And why not. At least you have kept the same wife all along!

Yes quite agree I did post that obviously, however 7 months down the line and having seen some right bo******s looking wheels can't seriously think of changing them for anything that will look nicer. Apart from the VW racing alloys but with a black car I'm not sure. So yeah it is monzas all the way for me.

Nope, neither of you two are off the hook. I'm gonna bring this up time and again!!! LOL
Set no.6? You never know, I get bored easy. Watch this space
Seriously though, I've had enough chopping and changing for a while, got to direct a bit of attention to house and holiday now, Mickey Mouse wants to empty my wallet again.

I am making so many enemies.
Feels like the 3rd Reich here!

As it was bathtime for the GTI I thought I'd better take some long awaited half decent photos including a shot of the recently fitted LED rear lights. I didn't want to bore everyone by starting a new thread just for a couple of photos so I thought I'd chuck them in here.

There is a sticky for your piccs that Snoops started so need for a special thread!
-
Oooh, thanks for that, didn't spot the sticky - I'll add to it now
-
Re-reading this thread I've just realised again that Froggy has 7 kids. Very impressed. Wow!
Also, there are two people not off the hook as yet. Or are they?
-
I might bring the subject up again sometime in the future when I'm in a mischievous mood
-
Now we just have to wait for Hartside's photos.

Have you informed your insurance company that you've put non-standard wheels on the car? [Different offset will change the handling]

Thanks RickS, that's a good point and a reminder as I have been meaning to contact my insurance company regarding this. I'm sure it will be a great excuse for them to take some more money of me!

Nice understated colour, more purposeful stance (offset), de-Monza'd* and LED rear lights. Perfect  Now just leave it alone, it looks spot on
* I'll never forget one member's post on here a year or so ago, when he said that Monzas looked as if a work experience at the VW factory had been asked to paint the insides with Hammerite

I can understand Froggy's dislike of the Monza Shadows. A couple of years ago I also disliked them. Then something happened and I fell in love with them which I never thought I would! Froggy has stayed steadfast and I admire him for it!

Why would you put pukeylagos on a GTI....... Why ?

Mother Nature makes us do strange things.

Yes I have. I'm a good boy like that. They didn't charge any extra either, nor for the LED tails. The different offset won't affect the handling too much and it's balanced out by being on all four wheels rather than just having spacers on the back like many have.

VWKEV You can't see past a GTI brochure..... if rocco's had Monza’s fitted as standard and GTI's had interlagos wheels as standard, you would probably be arguing the other way round.
Don't get me wrong if I'm honest I actually prefer the Monza's on my car, but for you to say the interlagos alloys look pukey is a bit sad imo.

in my opinion, it takes away from GTI styling a bit. However, it sure does look very elegant.

That's the comment I agree with most. I've been waiting for someone to put into words what I was otherwise incapable of deciding on myself.
The GTI with Monza wheels looks like a GTI sports model.
The GTI with VWR wheels looks like a little more hardcore.
The GTI with the rocco wheels looks more elegant - more understated.
Although I think the GTI suits the lagos better than a rocco suits monzas (perhaps we just have a better car ha ha )
