Title: To Mod or not to Mod....
Post by: PVsilvergrey on 10 March 2010, 23:13
Hi

First post!!!

Recently bought a Mk2 8v Gti, 1989, one of the first big bumpers in the UK.
48k, 100% standard, 1 careful lady owner, garaged since new, never had any paint work, no rust and 99.9% blemish-free (interior 100% perfect)
5 door, in silver grey (seems to be quite a rare colour to me).  A lucky find I reckon, and really enjoying it.  :smug:

On steel rims, fancy some RA's, but that's not really a mod.
The car has 16v badges on it (from the factory so I was told) which I've left on for now, figuring it's part of the history.
The car needed new dampers and the garage I go to said why not go with 16v ones - sharpen things up a little.  So I did and am happy with them.  Thinking of ordering OEM 16v springs to match as they are just about still available.
The engine felt a little loose (almost like a misfire at times) so my garage recommended some uprated engine mounts.  Had these fitted and sure enough it feels a lot more solid.
Then I'm thinking maybe I'll get the head reworked and some different cams + remap at some point.

But then I'm feeling guilty for "subtly" (?) modifying such a mint original example of this modern classic.....
.....Should I feel bad? :undecided:

I've always been a stickler for keeping things standard up until now....

What do you reckon?

Cheers
Paul

Yer man that is a minter, i would feel guilty... see if you can get hold of another to f**k about with.

But then again it is a 5 door...

So is it a valver or not?

Is the colour atlas grey? Get a code from the panel inside the boot where the lock mech is.

Dont think chipping and mapping an 8valve will do very much to be honest mate without some head work and a decent manifold and maybe a cam to be honest.

My 8valve has all that done and more yet it is still drive-able in traffic and around town yet it looks the same under the bonnet. Just get it done properly if you want to keep the value of the car high

Then enjoy

Tricky huh :)

You could stop messing right now and try and sell it for a good few k to those that obsess about low mileage. 5 door though and not one of the well loved colours so not worth a fortune!

Why feel bad though? Enjoy the car, they were sold in big numbers, do whatever you like :)

I can't believe that it was possible to buy an 8v with 16v badges from new

Welcome... someone once said "this thread is worthless without pics!" so get posting
Keep the car standard! don't mod any further than Wheels, tyres, ride height, and a subtle exhaust, anything more imo is all part of the slippery slope...
So what is it, 8V or 16V, either way at 48K, its hardly run in!
Just enjoy it

Blimey - I thought I'd get no replies at this time of night.  Losers  joking obviously.

It is an 8v.  Good spec mind with sunroof PAS and leccy windows x 4 around.  And an as new Fischer branded cassette storage device

According to the couple who sold it to me the car was delivered with 16v badges on and the dealer apologised and said he'd either take them off or retro fit them some OEM darkened rear lenses as a gesture and chuck in some other bits.  They went with the latter!

Pics to follow, probably at the weekend.  Any special requests?

I *think* I'll probably get the wheels and prob 16v springs and leave it at that for now and just enjoy it as you say.

PS - I'm glad a lot of people don't like 5 doors - would have cost me twice as much!!

By the way it is definitely silver grey (or silbergrau on the touch up stick I ordered - well, I found 6 stone chips!)
Not Atlas.  I will get the code.

Mod it but keep any old parts so you can return it to standard.

Also cannot see the badges being correct, someone has fitted them later in its life.

The reason I asked?  Why would "one careful lady owner" stick 16v badges on! 8v's never came out the factory with them, also. its the guys first post, I have no idea just how much he knows about cars or engines, could be that he was misinformed about engine config... It does happen, that's why I asked for pics...

I'd dunno, you get plenty of mis builds. Just look in the MKVI section at the number of people who go to pick up their new motor to find it's missing some options they specified. A couple badges stuck on the wrong car is less of a miss build than missing leather seats etc and I bet it happened more than once. I'm sure 1 or two MKVI owners have specified DSG and turned up to collect their car to find a manual. Now that's miss build!

I agree with Nick.

Now, the last person who tipped up on here saying 'should I mod my original 8V' currently has an ABF (2.0 16V) on their garage floor waiting to go in.

You knows it makes sense!

Although to be fair, his had done around 200k IIRC.

If it's all nice and original, I would try to keep it that way, or only upgrade to things that would have been available at the time. Headlight levellers, electric mirrors etc.

16v suspension is a good choice and RA's work really well with big bumpers, but other than that I would leave it alone.

I'm not sure about the badges though. Even if they were on from new, it will look to everyone else that you put them on and are trying to make out that the car is something it's not. Does it have a badge on the glovebox lid and a bee sting aerial as well?

there's an easy way to check what engine it has

floor it from a standing start, if the car stays still and the ground moves then its an 8v

Shortly followed by a loud clank as a rod tries to escape through the side of the block in protest to being asked to go to over 4000rpm

1. Keep it original (as much as poss)

2. Nothing wrong with a 5 door!

3. I added RAs and electric windows to my unmolested version as I believe that is how it should have come out of the factory (big bumper version 8v btw).

So not unsurprisingly you have the full range - mod it to hell and keep it original - you got plenty of time to decide - I wish mine had 48k and not 148k!!!
Title: Re: To Mod or not to Mod....

considering you can now buy diesel mondeos that are as quick as an 8v mk2, you should probably mod it.

Most modern cars are faster than an 8v - my wife's diesel polo for one! But that aint the point is it? They are just so good to drive and got such kudos with their classic status - imo anyways.

Guys

Thanks for all the replies.  You're right I was bound to get the full range!!

There's no point in talking about the 16v badges really but I bought the car from the original owners and they were as honest as you get.  Why would they have lied to me?  It does have a bee sting and a glove box badge.  Admittedly with my not being the original owner people may be less likely to believe me in a few years, but to me it's part of the history.  Plus I like the way that flash of red compliments the body colour  Misbuilds are still common even now.

I have had far quicker cars than the Mk2 (including the Corrado VR6 I wished I'd never sold ) but that's not what it's all about for me either.  A 16v would have cost me a lot more and it'd still be a lot slower than anything I've owned in the last 11 years.
Love the car, love the shape, love the looks I get / kudos, loads of character, love the color.

I'm going to go with the 16v springs and alloys for now.

I'll try and take some pics at the weekend when I've cleaned it.  Promised you wont laugh at my 14 inch steelies

I'd love to get some heated mirrors - is that an easy one?

Cheers

Paul

If it's got the bee sting and the glovebox badge then it very much sounds like a misbuild, quite a cool quirky history really. Looking forward to the pics.

Its sooooooooooo easy for it to be a misbuild...

When a car is rolling off a production line and can NOT be stopped as it will cost a friggin fortune to stop it.... then what ever parts they have will go on the car!! This happens loads of times.

That is why people have problems when they ask for parts specific for the model they have and the part is wrong.

different brakes is one of the worst misbuilds in cars up to date. My mate has a mk3 1.6 with 288mm brakes as standard...... explain that.???

Lookin 4ward to the pics :afro:

Agreed. My mate works at Plant Oxford and he says the number of mis builds is pretty high. Cooper S's with the wrong colour scoop in the bonnet is a good example. The guy fitting the scoops has them lined up int he same colour order as the cars coming down the line. If the scoop or car order is wrong it costs too much money to stop the line and sort it so they fit the wrong one and sort it out at the end. Sometimes cars can slip through the rectification process.

My mate works in the body refinish section doing paint repair on cars that get damaged on the line or have wrong colour bits fitted. He says the funniest ones are when the window fitting robot has a fit and just smashes the screen over the roof of the car!

Difficult one re. the modding question. It would be a shame to dump the original 48k engine, but if it already has 16v badges on it, it's already asking for an ABF.

Misbuild I have seen yes but we are talking about a 8v with a roof aerial and all the badges of a 16v, still cannot see that having left the factory.

That says missbuild to me. No one would make up that kind of story for someone sticking the badges on. Besides the fact that I've never seen someone go to the effort to put the badge on the glovebox and the beesting on an 8v. The low mileage and condition described suggest it's been nowhere near someone who'd be likely to do this anyway.

Misbuild or not, it doesn't matter now and modding is a very personal thing. It's down to what you want out of the car, if you want it slammed, blacked out windows, ripspeed alloys and scrubbin' fairy nuff, if you want it standard fairy nuff.

Bee sting was an option on an 8v, my dad's 89 small bumper has one.

Misbuild I have seen yes but we are talking about a 8v with a roof aerial and all the badges of a 16v, still cannot see that having left the factory.

Why? As has been said, cars leave with the wrong gearboxes, headunits etc etc. My sister's boyfriend's fiesta st was built with half leather seats and tinted windows, neither of which he asked or paid for. 3 badges are hardly a massive mistake.....

I still want to see a pic of the engine, before I'm convinced  Interesting topic though, badged as a 16v would have meant that someone had placed a bin full of badges at the end of the 8v production line, and left the factory, after being inspected! then delivered to the dealer, and missed on the PDI. I would have thought that misbuilds would be more likely to be things like, the wrong fabric on seats, wrong tint of glass etc, the sort of stuff that is specified on the build code sticker in the boot
Imagine ordering a Ford Sierra GL, and you take delivery of a car badged as a Cosworth Sierra
For me, the most likely scenario is that somehow the car was rebadged at the dealer, maybe the original owners bought a cancelled order, where someone wanted it badged as a 16V... we'll never know

If the production line was anything like the current Mini line, all cars are made on the same line and all cars are checked before rolling out of the door on the same line. The badges are placed on by people, people make mistakes. Sometimes the build sheet is put on the wrong car after someone takes it off to check something, sometimes people can pick up the wrong parts (cooper S badge instead of cooper for example), sometimes people are lazy, tired or just genuinely don't notice the wrong parts are fitted, it happens

It didn't pass the dealer PDI - it failed on the badges and the dealer called the new owners to ask what they wanted to do....

I might take them off, but anyway I just thought it was quite an interesting story, which I believe.
I'll probably need to get a new glove compartment lid I guess as it might have discoloured over time from the glue?? (where as the grille one would pop off and the rear one will come off with a hair dryer and some dental floss).
No rush I guess - it's been looking daft for over 20 years!!

That's really tidy and an unusual colour for a GTI.

I looked at one same colour years ago when i dreamed of being able to afford insurance on a gti and that was £2.5k then.
Looks very tidy that,i d feel guilty doing anything to it.

Thanks for the comments all.

Yes have decided all I'm planning for now is some RA's and I might get some 16v suspension put on.

If you do take the badges off you will get good money for them.

It is indeed a lovely example - enjoy!

Just out of interest, where are you getting your 16v springs from, and roughly how much are they?

Thanks,
Robert

I haven't sourced any yet, but I think a full set of OEM 16v springs will be getting on for £250....not the cheapest option
