Are these worth buying as its on my next to do list
312mm front Brakes (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320468200402&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT)
-
to me that looks pricey!
people are normally unaware but if you throw a little bit more money in there, you could get a set of porsche 4 pots for that with discs, or for around 25-300 a really nice big set of brembos
-
312mm conversion is on my list too as my brakes will need doing in a month or two. Started to look yesterday so interested in peoples thoughts on these / buying tips.

Jake, can you tell what to get then and from where in that sort of price. I know you have done porsche brake conversion on yours :afro:
-
As a complete kit that looks pretty cheap to me
I paid £250 about 3 years ago for genuine Audi TT stuff

Big brembos' and the like are normally £300 just for the calipers!! you then got the insane costs of discs and pads
-
Rhyso, do you think its worth buying then :lipsrsealed:

Rhyso, do you think its worth buying then :lipsrsealed:
Unless you want to go to the hassle of sourcing everything yourself, spraying them up etc etc then I'd say its worth it
312mm's are fine for everyday normal driving IMO
-
Big brembos' and the like are normally £300 just for the calipers!! you then got the insane costs of discs and pads
NOT TRUE!!!
People always think that the costs are so much more! That is not the case! You can run a 312mm disc with a 4 pot brembo or 4 pot porsche set up! there for the discs cost exactly the same!!!
Pads are marginally more exensive, yet you can get a set of mintex for cheap as chips! Its only 6 pots that really jump in value! I would much much much rather have a nice leon cupra r 4 pot set up than a small brake upgrade like the ones devilz is looking at
The only extra thing that you would need for the porsche set up is custom bracket which i could get you Dave browns details and he would knock the whole lot up for you in a week tops!
He offered me a whole set of FERRARI with lines, discs calipers and fluid, and brackets for £400
Dont get me wrong, as Rhyso mentioned, the 312 will do a great job! Yet at the same time, for a little bit more money, you could have brakes that make your eyes pop out your head when a)looking at them and b)using them

I'm well aware of what can be run.........the way you wrote your post implied you were on about stuff from R32's and LCR's which run bigger discs and are prohobitilvely expensive
You might find that you'll also need spacers etc depending on the offset of your wheels or you'll need new wheels altogether!
I looked at doing the 996 caliper conversion and for me found it too expensive with the added cost of spacers (plus I don't like spacers anyway). I was staring £500 in the face which is too rich
And do try and spell my name right
-
With a 4 pot brake you would need no more than a 5mm spacer!
My brakes have the biggest housing out of any other 6 pot brake on the market and i only needed a 6 mm spacer!
With a 4 pot you could easily get away with a 4mm spacer! Which........ means that they do not need to hubcentric spacers! as they recommend anything over 8mm to hubcentric, anything lower than that and your ok!
So a none hubcentric spacer kit for the front, would cost around £40
not expensive!!
R32's and LCR's which run bigger discs and are prohobitilvely expensive
They do run bigger discs, yet you can run a 312mm disc, which means they do not cost more!
or you'll need new wheels altogether!
Anything with a wheel that is 18" or over is easily adequate

I was told 15mm spacer as I have Anni wheels which unless you then space out the rear would look even dafter so it does become very expensive!
A lot of the expense comes down to what you have currently fitted in terms of wheels and brakes

15mm spacer???
That is ridiculous? What brakes were you going to run..... reventon brakes?
At the end of the day, people can buy what they want? But i have bought 3 sets of brakes now! The 312 upgrade was nice, as it bit a little more! yet for the money, not worth it! And dont look good under a big wheel!
Where as 4 pots..... are affordable, can be done to a small budget, not hard to get hold of... and look cracking under a wheel!
Devilz..... if you want a very cheap brake upgrade, i would say buy them! But you will be dissappointed for the money you spend!
I would recommend do a 4pot conversion in stages! Buy the calipers, then the discs etc etc. That way you dont blow money all in one go! Up to you pal!
-

The 996 rear calipers - it might be a 5mm I not 100% sure; either way I personally don't like spacers so therefore didn't pursue it

Fair point, but spacers to a very small scale are not expensive and not a practical issue! They space is tiny!
-
it depend on what size wheels u got ,think it should be able to fit under 19s ... u will need the brakes lines and adaptors too
-
Don't you just need carriers and disks for the 312mm upgrade?
-
Don't you just need carriers and disks for the 312mm upgrade?
that you do but you can make some money back selling your old calipers
You can either spend time hunting the parts down or buy complete kits - up to the individual
-
i will have a full set 312mm brake set up for sale soon callipers, carriers, ebc redstuff pads and ebc discs £250 all with less than 800 miles on!
sorry to hijack but will braided brake lines what are already on my mk4 fit a set of LCR brembo's?
-
it wont fit dude !
-
things are heating up here, I only asked for advice :lipsrsealed:
-
Carriers £100 or less from a scrappy.
Use existing calipers.
312mm Pagid discs £70
Pads £30+
So you could do it for £200.
-
Carriers £100 or less from a scrappy.

312mm Pagid discs £70
Pads £50ish
total comes to £220. I won't mind paying £15 more if that saves me from hassel of crappys.
At the minute, i'm running 18's and thinking to change the wheels sometime in summer and the ones I got in mind, I think bigger brakes will look sweet as they will be more prominent. Also doing ko3s conversion which will follow by G60/VR6 and then 312mm brakes conversion.
-
It depends what pads and discs they're supplying as it could be cheap crap. He sell the carriers for £100.
-
Depends what you can get the carriers for, mine were off a TT and the local scrappy charged me £23 for the pair

The brembo's have a different connection at the caliper end,so your current braided hoses won't fit the new set up.Just use the std lcr brake lines for now

cheers patch

10mm spacers required with 996 rear calipers when running 7.5j RC's with 8j you can get away with none or with LCR brakes you need 20mm spacers
your looking at around £450/£500 for calipers, discs (325/330mm), pads, hoses and caliper spacers which for some, if not most people is a lot of money to spend
-
Out of curiosity how much are new carriers from the dealers? Only reason i ask is that i lookde at the other listing for that seller on ebay and he does caliper and carrier for £149 so he must be getting the carriers cheap cause calipers ain't cheap new.
-

£130 IIRC :undecided:
-
So how is this guy selling "new" calipers and carriers for £149. More investigating required i think.

That is an unfortunate case of an unpractical wheel for a big brake set up! most wheels will not require a spacer of that size! I have seen 4 pot conversions completed for £300. With ease!
-
Jake,i strongly disagree with that comment mate.
A lot depends on the width of the wheel, the design of the spokes etc....

+1 the 8j anni wheels fit with no problems but the 7.5j need spacers

£300  be lucky to get a set of calipers for that now with the scene tax and all. then discs are £120, pads £50, caliper spacers £120, hoses £40 thats going on a price from DaveB. I'd have to source the calipers myself which seem to go for £200 for ones which need a refurb to £400 for a mint set
-

I dont really understand some of what people say sometimes on here!
Dave brown this, dave brown that!
I worked closely with Dave over a 4 month period! I scoped over 12 different sets of calipers, discussing which brakes cost which amount, which brakes offer which performance! Alot of people seem to mention Dave brown to support there silly comments about brakes?
£120 discs????? My brakes run off a 350mm disc, and the discs cost me £100! So i would guess at 'Dave browns' rates, a set of 312mm discs, would cost no where near that! How much do 312 discs cost for the anni set up? I have seen them from local trade shops for £30-£40 a disc! So where £120 comes from i dont know!
Spacers- You do not need hubcentric spacers for anything under 8mm, so therefore a wheel spacer kit would cost you around £40
Calipers- ' you would be luck to get calipers for £300? If people actually went to daves house they would start to realise that comments like that are utter sh!te! And the reason i say that, is because dave had a set of Cupra R brakes, and he offered whole kit for £300. THATS THE WHOLE KIT, and thats a 4pot!! Not a single piston 'big brake upgrade'
I think people sometimes need to think about things before they say them! As sometimes, other people do know more than themselves on other areas! brakes are something i invested alot of time and money into! And i looked into for a very long time! So when people come out with comments like that it actually gets on my nerves!
People on forums know alot of different areas. yet alot of people seem to have this' I know more than you' approach! ' you cant tell me, i already know'
Why would you need to source calipers yourself when Dave has around 30 sets in his house?
If your wheels dont take a big brake set up , i say more fool you, choose a wheel that does, otherwise dont put off people who are looking at brakes by saying ' you'll need atleast £600 for them'
And patch if you disagree with what i say, thats your opinion! Im entitled to my own!
-
Go Jake!
-
I'm tempted to go to the metal benders bay at work, get me a big piece of metal and set to it with a file and measure with the good old vernier calipers, anyone know the dimensions? although brakes and homemade carriers, hmm not such a good idea it may be something that saves your life. :undecided:
-
The carriers need to be very very good metal!
This is something that cannot be slacked upon! As you can get porsche carriers (brackets) for £30 off ebay! Yet they will be made of tinfoil!
-
Good metal is no problem, there are some blocks of solid steel at work, i fact i just skipped a load of solid steel today that is used as the towing adaptors to tow tanks, nothing wrong with it just not needed as we have loads of them, hmmmm.
-
Why would you need to source calipers yourself when Dave has around 30 sets in his house?
Not everyone knows who Dave is and therefore won't be able to deal with him. Maybe he won't want to deal with us (by the way from what I've read on ukmkivs he is a top bloke so its not an attack against him)
If your wheels dont take a big brake set up , i say more fool you, choose a wheel that does, otherwise dont put off people who are looking at brakes by saying ' you'll need atleast £600 for them'
But that negates the point of a cheap upgrade! Most people will have bought wheels well before they bought their brakes. Have you stopped to think that people might actually like the wheels they have on their car?
Me personally, I spent 12 months saving for my set of Anniversary wheels so its not exactly a case of well, I want bigger brakes, best change my wheels then.......not all of us have money to burn
We're not here to put people off - we're here to help people make an informed decision
The 312mm upgrade is perfectly fine for everyday use and an offers an improvement over the standard setup. To improve them further you can just buy upgraded brake pads

Ive also looked into this upgrade and pm'd DaveB him (as you seem to get pissy if anyone else mentions his name) on what kits he can supply and prices
I would pop up to his house for a chat and to see what he can offer but as he lives 200+miles away its a bit of a trek for a chat.
as for the brake discs costing £120 I was referring to the 325mm discs which cost £120

you may find a set cheaper at a breakers but these would need a refurb
as for the wheels I agree 100% with Rhyso
-
Not many want brake lag either
-
one of the reasons why I am keen on 312mm brakes is i'm going to change wheels in summer and standard brakes will look too small in between spoke gaps. 312mm will look better and will give better braking than standard discs.

Seem to get pissy when anyone else mentions his name? Comments like that are pretty comical! I also rang Ian birch regarding a Throttle body coversion, supercharger conversion! That doesn;t bloody mean i know all there is too know just because i 'looked into that modification'
I get pissy when people mention Dave browns name, to back up naive, stupid , and some what silly statements!
I love the way you have just picked out the calipers off the forum with a nice high price tag? I typed in Porsche calipers on ebay and found a set for for £145 on the first page , you must have missed them!
Im not on here to argue, but sometimes people forget they dont actually know everything there is to know!

£145  only one I can see for that are these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PORSCHE-944-TURBO-S2-BREMBO-REAR-BRAKE-CALIPERS_W0QQitemZ120495625034QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item1c0e19534a). the cheapest ones are these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Porsche-Rear-Calipers_W0QQitemZ290392592376QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item439cbf4ff8) and they could do with a refurb
so because you had tea round DaveB's house and have some expensive brakes makes your a expert? price Ive said are what Ive seen on the net for parts and priced up using parts needed for the 325mm 996 rear brake kit

Mate its actually quite funny how you have come out with 2 immature comments, 'i got pissy about people mentioning his name' and 'im an expert cos i had tea at his house?
Mate come on..... im 20 ffs and i can atleast handle a mature discussion! I'll tell you what mate! Call it truths, Forums are no longer for finding information, asking and getting and giving advice! No...... they are all about i know it all!
Yeah i do have a big brake set up. and yeah i did have fitted by someone who 'actually knows something about brakes' , and i can bet my bottom dollar mate i actually do know more on this subject than you!
I invest a lot of money into my car... (not that money is knowledge), and more than that, alot of time, not time fixing and modifying, thinking time,...researching time! So i take it personally, when someone who thinks just because they have a kudos on a forum, or a high number of posts, or a few mates who will back you up on here thinks hes a wizz kid, so fires back with childish comments to actually make himself feel better that the comment he just made, was utter turd!
Parts on the net mean absoloutely F.U.C.K all to me. If you want mate buy a 4pot set for £1200 from awesome gti, which again shows where people get this fear of big brake concversions from ,because companies like that charge stupid prices...... or you can buy a Garrett GT300 which will give you 1,000,000bhp off ebay for £3.49 with a £1.50 postage charge!
When you actually research into something, and learn an area which i have, come back and give me some stats and facts, because i can feed them to you all day long. Just because you can add prices together with a calculator does not mean you know about brakes!!!
So dont argue mate, as you will lose!
This is the last time im posting on this post, so you can reply with some smarmy, immature comment if you want! it might make your ego feel bigger than your brakes!

Jake to be fair, the original poster was asking about a 312mm set up.This set up gives the most oem feel regarding bite/pedal travel and master cylinder capabilities etc...for not much money.Once you start moving into 4/6pot territory you will suffer more pedal travel
312mm carriers can be found from £20 upwards, add some new discs and pads and he's looking at a minimum £140 312mm brake conversion. This is more than enough for a luke warm family hatch, obviously not everyone has the power you have to warrant such big brakes,
My advice to the op is,if you want to drive your car like it's a race car take it on the track and buy big brakes,if you participate in the odd bit of spirited driving then a 312mm set up will be fine for such little costs.
-
I agree with that but big brakes look COOOOOOOOOOL
Plus i cant afford big brakes damn damn damn
-
I want some 256mm rears. Anyone know where I can get some cheap?

Scrappies or look for breakers on Ebay as that's how I sourced mine
£110 delivered for the whole shooting match
-
Just out of interest, I emailed the seller on the OP's original ebay link to ask what parts he was supplying, as the ad only said:
This set consists of :
· 2 x OEM Brake Calipers Natural, Red, Black
· 2 x OEM Brake Caliper Carriers Natural, Red, Black
. 2 x 312mm plain front brake discs
. Full front set of brake pads
I wasn't sure if the discs and pads were going to be cheap and crappy. He has come back with;
"yes the parts are genuine vw/audi and the discs and pads are EBC branded products"
Does this give any indicator as to whether they will be any good or not?
Also, I assume no issues with going for 312mm brakes with the standard 16" Monty II's?
-
To me thats a good deal
And yes they will fit - JUST!

If its genuine discs then it seems a good buy plus you can get some money back by selling your old calipers and carriers
-
I read that to be that everything was genuine OEM apart form the discs and pads. I still might try it anyway - I don't drive that fast that often!
-
sorry missed read that. EBC are a well know company, website states £37.50 per disc link (http://www.ebcbrakesdirect.com/car/parts_disc.asp?part=disc&make=VOLKSWAGEN&model=Golf%2FJetta&year=2.8+4+Motion+%2899-03%29)
-
Anyone checked out the sellers other items, he also does carriers on their own for £95 or carriers, discs and pads for £160 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-Audi-Golf-Anniversary-312mm-Brake-carriers-discs-pad_W0QQitemZ320468200380QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item4a9d64abbc
I think personally i would go for the £160 option and use my calipers, or my spare set, that seems like a good deal.
Or if you want a particular setup of pads/disc just by the carriers of there, still a good price.
-
£160 for 312mm calipers is way more than you should aim to pay.

In that case, not so bad then
-
alright, final words before i click buy it now button, shall i go with original link posted in first thread or i should consider second option, the £160 one??
-
if you go with the second option you may need to paint your caliper or the carriers to what colour you want. first option you wont have to paint anything
-
apaprt from the backs to match
-
I don't mind painting calipers myself. atleast i'm still saving money
-
My point exactly, got to be the way ahead with this one, abd from the price steve gave for the discs thats cheap fo all in i think.
