Title: Rolling road results
Post by: Neil gti on 12 January 2010, 19:50
Had a good day at R Tech over the weekend and we managed to raise £1100 for charity,
A big turn out with people from all over the country turned up & in the crap weather too, (well done to all)
Be rude not to put the car on the rollers as it was for charity

Golf + magazine turned up and a big spread and loads of pics going in the mag

Not quite what Revo reckon but not far off,

Only 1 mk6 there, 1 mk5 gti (hurdys) i think did 365bhp
a few R32s running 240-250s and the rest mk3s and 4s
i think mine came 2nd or 3d on the day out of 20 cars on the rollers so not bad for just a cheeky remap,

all getting printed in Golf + mag so should be good reading

excuse the noobness, but which figures are bhp?  given you've had a remap I presume the ones in brackets?  i.e. 242-258 bhp?

Title: Re: Rolling road results
Post by: Exonian on 13 January 2010, 05:05
Similar BHP to what mine ran at TSR back in November (260 bhp), also with REVO.

Yes thats the figures in brackets 258bhp  274max torque  the last run was low 242 due to heat soak or something ?
They said you will get slightly higher results when on the road due to the wind getting forced through the intercooler etc,
quite happy with that and the car seem to be a lot quicker on the way home after been on the rollers for some reason :undecided:

looks like 260 is about the norm then for a remap then,
i have only ever used V Power aswell when filling up dont know if that makes a difference or just all hype from the garages,

Gossa's and Frog's both got over 270bhp IIRC and mine ran 260 using supermarket 97 RON. Dyno lottery as ever but at least it gives a rough guide as to what sort of figures the Revo stage 1 puts out. From memory I think most TFSI mk5 GTIs (KO3) seem to be around 240-250 bhp with stage 1 Revo so we're a little ahead in bragging rights so far!

How big was the cooling fan @ R-Tech? The one at TSR was quite small.

Yes R Techs fan was small aswell and it was the 1st one with DSG that they have had on the rollers,
Hurdy had to ride shotgun

Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme, or if you're really committed the Snowtrac.

A lot of the MKV boys have nothing but high praise for Vredestein tyres. They're the next tyre on my hit-list to try when I need new tyres in a couple of months.

Not to be sniffed at around £81 (225/45/17) a corner on here:- http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php (http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php)

Or try this review resource:- http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyres_For/Volkswagen/Golf-GTI.htm (http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyres_For/Volkswagen/Golf-GTI.htm)

Ok, they are mainly MKV reviews, but surely the results can be that different for the MKVI?  :undecided:

Yes, I was driving on the Snowtracs last week in Germany and they are pretty impressive in the snow (Passat by the way). I'm told Wintracs are nearly as good and given the usual mild UK winters, I'm going to get them. If we had winters like this one every year, I'd get the Snowtracs.

Did you go for 16" or 17" wheels? The narrower 205/55R16 or 205/50R17 will be better if it does snow.

no i got 18" R32 Wheels, i know you really need smaller/narrower tyres for snow and ice but still has to look the part
So i will try the Vredsteins wintracs anything will be better than F1s in this weather even slics
Thanks for the heads up Mac

Waiting for a call back from local tyre firm but they dont do Vredestein's, so see what he recommends and prices?

I dunno about performance in the snow, but another name chucked about in the MKV section are Falken FK452? I think alot of Scooby and E46 M3 owners are running these - can't be bad?!

I'm running Avon ZZ3 (at about 3.5mm) on my front axle and they've been excellent in the snow, actually.

See what yer man says and to be fair, you pays yer money... :afro:

Continental winter contact are also good - I've used these in the past in the UK and driving in Europe. They'll still be expensive though in 18"s.

Mate I really like how you've made such a brand new car into your own with the mods you've done. It was a pleasure to drive it (even though the car didn't actually move anywhere at 100+ mph )

A little info about the graph for you:

It's colour-coded so you can easily recognise which order the runs are in. Blue = first run, orange = second run and red = third run. Think of it like a temperature scale. (the lines on the graph aren't too clear on the scan)

The numbers at the top as you can see are max power and torque against the rpm they were reached at. The numbers in the brackets are the calculated flywheel bhp (the ones manufacturers quote) and the others are the measured wheel horsepower.

By the 3rd run it seemed heatsoak had set in as the power tailed off quite rapidly. Ambient air temps were quite low and there are 3 fans pointed at the car - one large prop fan and 2 smaller but very powerful fans that are normally used for inflating huge bouncy castles  So maybe heatsoak..maybe the car/map has an issue.. maybe i messed up trying to avoid the kickdown on the DSG (you'd think i would have the technique down by the 3rd run though  )

Great to meet you on the RR day Neil

The MKVI is steadily growing on me, but I'll be keeping the ED30 when I move to a MKVI and stripping it for track.

The rollers seemed to be very accurate and Topher said that they regularly check the accuracy against the likes of JKM's and Awesome's rollers and read on the "accurate" side, rather than the "ego boosting" side

260 to 270bhp seems to be what the MKVI GTI's kick out with a simple remap and Oettinger are already pushing 300bhp in a higher tune state, so it appears that the TSI is quite a tuneable motor

All I need to do now is decide......Golf R or Scirocco R......hmmmmm.

Hurdy, I think I might be one of the few that has owned a Scirocco and a GTI. I would say that the GTI is a much more sorted car, Scirocco was terrible with understeer/torquesteer etc. I guess have a test drive and decide for yourself but I would have the Golf everytime (although the Scirocco looks awesome and more unique).
