Just had a call from my friendly stealer.
Apparently, they've got a Golf R demonstrator coming in later this week.
Asked if I wanted a go.
EDIT: Just to clarify. It's not strictly a demonstrator, but a new car for one of the managers. I guess it will have been built at the same time as the press cars.
-
How far 'North' are you? Can I come?

I think they'd be a bit peeved if I showed up with a load of GTI owners who just wanted to check it drove like an S3.
-
Maybe they want to upgrade their GTI's to the R :smug:

Strictly speaking, it's not a demo car. It's a VW employee car.

Have a go and give us a full report! :afro:

Two dealers in Central London are also getting demonstrators. I was called today. They called them 'demonstrators'. Apparently orders for the new R haven't been overwhelming. Must have something to do with the price going up 10% before the car had even been launched. I reckon the only reason they saying sales will be limited to 500 is because they don't expect to sell more.
-

PM me. I don't want to publish the name of the dealership.

I didn't realise that was where you worked. The GTD I got 6 weks ago is on a lease from VW Cheltenham (Via QVS Leasing).
Will I get in trouble if it comes back remapped
-
Hmm, I think I'd better stop by my dealer tomorrow.

Please would post pictures of the following:
1. True colour of Rising Blue in British daylight!!!!
2. Boot floor compared to normal GTI
3. Rear passenger seats
4. Front 3/4 view
5. Regular leather seat controls
Much obliged.

Just wondering how its turned up so quick? My order went in on the second day of ordering, and I'm a BW10 so far. If VW aren't technically allowing demonstrators, I guess this went through as an imaginary customer order? If so, how come you've got it already?
-
I have no idea how this thing turned up didnt have a clue it was coming till saw it on top of transporter pulling into work today, your right we cant order a demonstrator only customers orders which need to be faxed to VW once placed. It is marked on dialog the VW system as introductory volume which some dealers maybe issued with the same eventually car but I can find only 3 other r's on there way to dealers. I am tempted to buy it myself.
-
pictures man, pictures!!
-
introductory volume looks like a nice name for a demo car to me
-
I was quite confident this would happen.

Do you know what you are talking about? No I thought not. This was the case when they released the scirocco to us you found loads of silver dsg gt' with leather and nav marked the same one dialog. Just the introductory volume of them e.g the first ones to be released into the uk.

Awesome ! Looks mean from the front :)
-
The new rear lights make it look much more of a weapon than the GTI ones. Not sure I like the blue though.

Seriously, that's a MEAN looking car, I want!
-
That is very nice, ticks all of the boxes for me. The price is the only factor although i could be tempted....
I wonder who will be the first owner on here........
-
SilverChariot,
Well done and thank you for Lee's heroic photos! This car rocks! I love it.
What is the spec on this car?
Leather? RNS510? DSG? ACC?
-
I wonder who will be the first owner on here........
I think the first owner will be someone who takes an introductory volume car, because the specced customer orders all seem to be March / April delivery dates
Car looks great - just a shame its got the 18's... and in silver (ain't that right SilverChariot? )
I can't wait for the follow up interior photos!!!

They're 19" wheels (notice the darkened headlight surrounds). :nerd:
But, yes, the wheels are the wrong colour.
EDIT: Definitely 19" - the tyre profile is 235/35. :nerd: :nerd:

Do me a favour. Take the rear LED lights off and give them to me!

Lovely!
Am I the only person in the world who PREFERS the cloth seats to leather?
The optional leather/alcantara buckets are quite nice but no way worth £3k, imo.
Do the 'normal' leather seats in the 'R' come with the white stitching?

Yes (well grey stitching):

Im with you on both accounts, both the leather and Recaro´s seem below in quality compared to other manufactors, could be pictures from pre-production cars i guess...

I'm test driving
mine one on Friday
-
Thanks for the pic. Think I still prefer the cloth seats! It just looks better, imo.
Have had leather before and it annoys me in the summer (sweaty ar5e) and the winter, despite heated seats.
The more reviews and pics I see of the R, the more I find myself wanting one and actually starting to justify spending £25K plus my existing car to have one...................
I daren't go and test drive it in case I do something silly like put a deposit down
I'm thinking 5 door, DSG, steel grey, 19" silver wheels, cloth, dynaudio, RNS510, park sensor and rear camera. Mmmmmmmmm......
-
me like . but I specced mine up and it came in at 41k.
for a golf

I reckon the black wheels would look good with Steel Grey. Check out this white one with black wheels:

I love the white with black wheels. I just wish I didn't have the sense not to order a white car (if that makes any sense?!)

OOOhh... I look forward to hearing how it compares with yours. Probably not as fast but being able to nail it at any given time should make it a great base to get Hurdy'd!

I'm not a fan of black wheels really, imo they only look good with a black car (maybe grey).
I really like the Rising Blue but would probably go for Grey as it's a bit more subtle and also a bit different. The blue will probably be very popular.

The Rising Blue will indeed be popular among R owners, but there'll only be 250 of us, so perhaps not that common after all. I am erring towards the black. Very discreet. It says: 'I speak softly but carry a big stick!'

Looking on the German web site which shows available Rs: Most of the are in White. Second is Black. With Rising Blue trailing in third.

Are your really sure there are only 250. There are 80 plus dealers, that only 3 for the year per delaer. One dealer on here already has two in stock. My local dealer expects more than 3. I am guessing is closer to 750.
-
im sort of with you on this ^^^ vw are now saying 250 1st year then 500, then 250 rocco 250 golf. They wont put it in black and white.
Plus lots of companys advertising online to lease/pcp etc the golf R. Their maybe upto 250 this year only cause they havent sold enough.
-
Sorry for delay guys spec of our Car at VW cheltenham is 5 door dsg, rising blue, fti, 19 inch alloys and rcd 510.
Pdi's in the showroom getting loads of attention, already got one bloke out of his mk6 gti he bought off me 3 months ago into an golf r when ever it turns up?

Discount?..........Golf R?.........Never!!!!!????
-
Discount?..........Golf R?.........Never!!!!!????
Depends how hard you try! I got a whopping 1.77% off mine, plus the dealer is paying half the VAT increase. Not much, but it works out at about £1000 in total
-

Discount?..........Golf R?.........Never!!!!!????
You may be able to negotiate a small discount.
But, put yourself in the position of the dealership. These cars have just arrived and are at a very limited number of dealerships. So, at the moment, they won't entertain a discount.
If they're still around in a months time, who knows? 5-10%?
-
Nobody gets hurt asking. By the way i have found a dealer who will give me discount if i factory order, didnt say how much, but better than none

Arrived at my local dealers this morning to test drive the R.......and it still isn't registered for the road.
Had a good look around it and I must say.......
I'm NOT convinced it is the car for me!!
I was driving over and almost salivating at the prospect of getting into the car and it just didn't do it for me when I got there.
Highlights...
The rear lights when on are lovely
Detailing like the silver knurled trim is better resolved than the MKV R32
The R logo's are embossed into the trim on the glovebox and entrance sills
The front DRL's look very nice indeed.
The leather seats are very comfortable and look better quality than in the MKV
Lowlights...
The boot space looks worse than the R32 - hardly a couple of inches deep
Not a lover of the black wing mirrors
Inside it was almost like being in my ED30 - everything in exactly the same place and the extra brushed aluminium detailing is a bit too overdone and reminds me of a 1970's chromed out car!
The pedals don't have the "R" logo in them. They look EXACTLY the same as a manual MKV GTI's
The exhausts are still TOO close together
The side sill extensions are rather flimsy and stick out such that you catch them on getting in and out of the car
The salesman was very amenable as was to be expected, but didn't know his arse from his elbow when it came to the details of the tech side of the car. When I mentioned the S3 he almost had an aperplectic fit, saying it was an old style car and the new R was a much better car.....even though he hadn't driven one either!!!
The car I specced up would cost £36k, which isn't too bad, but for a car I'm not sure about I'll leave it for now. Maybe the test drive will help next week
It looks like I'm back to square one again. Still can't find a car that I can fall in love with. but then again, I'm hardly falling out of love with the ED30.
Maybe the ED35 or the RS3 will float my boat more....who knows. :undecided:
-
What dealers is that at Hurdy, wouldnt mind a look myself

No, wouldn't let me out in it till Tuesday at the earliest and it was sitting smack bang in the middle of their showroom.

Gilders in Sheffield at Meadowhead branch
-
true arrogance...somebody is trying to buy a car..hello dealers wake up...
mind you in Holland the situation isn't any better and you still get more service buying a pair of trousers....at least you are alowed to fit them...
out of all the dealers with various brand only BMW stands on its own with miles apart...they know exactly what service means without overdoing it....
but the GTI is more my car then the often statuslike BMW so I swallow a lot....once I get out of there VW garage they do not see me for loads of months... :smug:
-
Smith Knight Fay in Cheshire have a Blue 5 door manual with cloth trim in the showroom. For anyone looking to purchase or test drive.

looks awesome from front
rest looks a bit of a let down to me, gti looks more special :undecided:
my money would go on a focus RS i think, seen one today FOOOOOK me now they do look MEAN

could say the same about the focus i guess. atleast the golf got a new interior
ultimately the focus is an inferior car which ever way you look at it

good for the golf, i don't really like the focus either
dont think i would ever buy a new car, think of the 2nd hand fun you could have for £30k

Also, when both modified they are capable of 370bhp each. weigh the same and yet the R still has the benefit of 4WD.

wheres the extra weight on the focus? i find that hard to believe

so a pair of hubs and an extra cylinder = the weight of a 4wd system? i dont think so
Focus RS
1467 kg
Golf R
1521kg
So you are right. The RS carries 54kg less than the R
Not a lot in it though.
-
jeez the focus is a bit of a porker isnt it
you kinda expect that sort of weight from a golf 4wd going by the other models
-

you kinda expect that sort of weight from a golf 4wd going by the other models
and with the kind of economy they offer... you would be better in an mk5 R32 anyway
-
focus would kick both their ass's FACT haha
miles better car the focus than any R32 and id rathe rhave it than the R, have you seen the graham good conversion that takes it to 400HP
all they need to do now is a stripped out motorsport version then you will have a right monster
guess it comes down to personal taste, i think the Focus RS looks mean as hell, and i want one bad after seeing the green one yesterday, had a good look round it and it was so nice, the seats inside look fantastic
im sure the golf R will also be fantastic, and i hope i grow to love it, but at the mo it looks a bit boring, interior looks nice, i do think if the wheels were changed it will probably look a million times better
i just wish they had made it look more like the mk 4 R32 sort of look
-
The R and the RS are aimed at very different markets though.
Besides the R is over half a second quicker to 60 and will out handle it no problem. Even the Rocco R is rated better than the RS in the motoring press.

The engine in the R will tune to 380bhp too and with that amount of power I'd put my money on the R utilising it much better than the RS any day.
Now a stripped down ED30 weighing under 1300kg with 380bhp.........

accordin to auto express the R cant match the RS in thge performance stakes.
and just for reference (unrelated to the mk 6 R) my mates ST out performes my other mates Mk4 R32
the fords are quick...
-
I would pick the Focus RS, better car, Golf is ok but a bit plain looking plus silly money when you spec it up.

I find that hard to believe! my mate has a focus ST and he could never live with the R32. In fact he puts his hands up and admits it a much better car, and if he could have afforded it, its what he would now be driving.
Had lots of plays with ST's and murdered them everytime. not even close.
-
hmmm dunno about that one mate, i mean i love R32's so much, but the bloody ST's are quick, map them and they REALLY fly, a 32 or gti wouldnt have a chance at all then..
(please dont jump on me as i am a huge fan of the R32 and still consider one for the next car, im just saying what we have experienced)

He has had loads of fast Fords including a Escort Cosworth, he has ordered a white one, did not like the green.

I think standard R32 vs Standard ST would be fairly equal. With a rempa the ST will be quicker as the R32 is NA so no option for cheap power upgrades.
As for the RS Vs New R there are already reports of the new R in standard trim clocking 0-62 times well under 6 secs. It's been mooted with a remap and some tweaks sub 5 secs should be achievable. Now that is fast!
I'm not gonna slate the RS though as I think it's a cool car but I just wish Ford had developed some balls and made it AWD. FWD and a stoopid electronic diff isa real cop out on what's supposed to be a Ultra Hot Hatch. The Sierra and Escort Cossies (same car underneath) were truly epic but I the Foci just don't quite hit the mark in the same way and I suspect will not be remembered in years to come in the same way as the mighty Cosworth Cars.

hmmm dunno about that one mate, i mean i love R32's so much, but the bloody ST's are quick, map them and they REALLY fly, a 32 or gti wouldnt have a chance at all then..
(please dont jump on me as i am a huge fan of the R32 and still consider one for the next car, im just saying what we have experienced)
Im not jumping on you.. but i have never had an ST even keep up with the R. so find that a little hard to believe. not from a standing start and certainly not around the twisties, and this was dry weather.

Not sure mk1 Focus RS did not do well in the road tests of the time but has a cult following now, they did plan on making the new one 4wd but did not due to cost reasons.
At the end of the day the Focus is £27k, Golf starts at £31k but with DSG, sat nav, leather and 19"s is £36k.

what do you mean nick by saying its the same as a escort and sierra, its a whole new chassis, or am i reading what you mean wrong?
R32UK, i hear you, just going on what iv seen... i like em both, not a massive fan of the ST looks for some reason though, just think they perform very well
-
Yeah I appreciate the MKI has a cult following, it'\s a really good car but it's not good enough to get the legendary status of it's predecessors and think the MKII should have taken that on board and really gone for it.
THe R is expensive but it's a faster more premium product and is priced accordingly. Like I said above the cars compete in a sector but the two are aimed at polar opposites of the customers in that sector. I doubt very much indeed many people will go from an R to an RS or vice versa.

I meant that the Sierra and the Escort are the same car underneath (Hence why proper Escort COssie panels will not fit on a MKV Escort). The Foci are a completely different setup.

so a pair of hubs and an extra cylinder = the weight of a 4wd system? i dont think so
Focus RS
1467 kg
Golf R
1521kg
So you are right. The RS carries 54kg less than the R
Not a lot in it though.
The Golf R is lighter than that isnt it ? Im sure thats the R32s weight.

I looked in my brochure - which doesn't have weights.
I then looked on vw.co.uk - 1521kg for a 3 door manual. Heavier for DSG and 5 door obviously!
-
Sounds like we need a hot hatch shootout like happened last year at the Pod
Magazine feature in Redline perhaps?
None of the ST's even though they were lighter and tuned got anywhere near the ED30's.
This year with RS v's Golf R it would be "interesting" to say the least.
A stock and even GGR340 RS is nowhere near as fast as a tuned ED30 on track, so give the Golf R a tune and put it against an RS and again it would be great to see.

i remember now. My mk5 r32 3dr manual log book said 1510kg. So is the new R actually heavier, weird.

GG have done another tune up i think, sure its close to 400hp, would kill a ed30/R dont you think ?
what proof is their of a ed30 been better than the 340 GG RS on a track Hurdy? just interested, and what mods to the ed30, i would have a ed30, really like them. just find it really hard to believe a RS or tuned RS is nowhere near as quick :undecided:

its the added weight of expectation!

Last year there was a GGR340 at SPA. It wasn't as fast as mine . Also overtook and had a play against a stock RS at the 'ring too. He was with a group of lads I know and he actually said that he'd just spent £25k on the wrong car
All this was before some more mods to my ED 30 including around another 25bhp, engine mounts and a Quaife ATB diff

i do love ed30's, they look so much better than the normal GTI, keep seeing a white one in leeds, which i think has split bbs rims, and its very low, only seen it on the move so not had a chance to properly look, its very nice
sometimes i think it might be down to the driver too re on the circuit etc, but your car sounds fantastic mate!, loving it

You can't actually go to Ford and buy a GGR RS370FR from stock - you have to take it to GGR - who charge you another £3975 + VAT for the privilege. I read its first drive in Autocar last week. They only gave it 3/5.
Its back to comparing a tuned car against a stock car. I'm sure if you were to splash out £4k on the Golf R, you'd have something that would eat the Focus for breakfast.

i also read that, did you see the 0-60 time
but if you spalsh out 4k on the golf your looking at a 40k car with the extras  so still alot more than the RS with the extra 4k....
and as time goes by youjust know their will be sooo many more mad mods forthe ford, just as it was with the cossies back in the day, plus i would imagine in years to come the ford will be worth more, cosworths now are worth a hell of alot, series 1 turbos are too!!! like 10k plus for the right ones
very much doubt a tuned R would eat the RS for breakfast but i can see why you would say that after shelling out 30 odd K on one (if thats yours in your sig it looks SOOOOO much better than the gay blue, very nice car indeed)
im sure both the RS and R are nice cars, to me the golf is the pretentious one out of the two and the ford is the mad asbo in your face monster.supose it depends what you want, over on the RS forums they say exactly what you guys say but only in favour of the ford
i like them both, just wish the Golf looked more mean, have you got more pictures of the white one??
*not looking for arguments btw

the driver is a BIG factor in this!

Getting another 100hp to the Golf R by chipping & fit an uprated fuel fuel pump, aftermarket downpipe & a complete exhaust system is a walk in the park.
If that is not enough & want to hit the 400hp mark. Get a Garrett GT2871 R turbo kit. This has been done on the Mk.V GTI as well as the Ed30 GTI.
So far I have not heard of any internals failure. If you want insurance on that, you can always get reinforced pistons, conrods & headstud kit. The Americans produce a lot of these stuff for the Golf.
