Another povery spec one with cloth seats and 18" alloys.

Still, looks good in Rising Blue.

Those pics make the colour look like cheap, flat, Company Car blue...they don't do it any favours!

True, it's because of the snow. My Mk5 R32 in Deep Blue Pearl always looked flat in dull snowy conditions.

In bright sunlight, it'll look mint.

The 4 inches of snow piled on the roof probably isn't helping.

the bucket seats severely reduce leg room in the back....
The leather seats look good but the standard ones are fine IMO

Yeah but the GTI ones look great in interlagos/leather

As for the comment about rear leg room - who cares about that!?

Glad I went back and paid extra for the leather... the standard seats look more horrid every time I see them.
Buckets are nice, but at over £3k they're a bit extravagent!

I had these bucket seats in my old Audi and found that the side bolsters got scraped every time you got in or out; so they tend to get battered very quickly. And, yes, they do severely restrict rear space. I really don't think they are better than the standard sports seats. So, all in all, I cannot understand why any sane person would lash out £3K on them.

I have all but decided to get a 5-door R now. DSG, ACC, Leather and Sat Nav are dead certs. What I can't decide is whether to have Rising Blue or Black. Just waiting for Car's review next week.

I was going to say about that, and it's badged a TSI when it's really the same old FSI as in the Ed30/S3 - Not on really..

Having seen the pics and read the write ups I cannot see what all you "R" fans are seeing.

Ok it has AWD but it's an ugly looker compared to the GTI which imo is just right.

A few more horses but a massive big price too!! definitely not for me I love my GTI too much.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!!  Personally I think the R is a much better looking car than the GTI - from the front anyway.  I think I'd rather have the GTI's exhaust setup, but the R has proper sideskirts instead of a couple of blobs of black plastic, and the front bumper looks better as it has definition at the bottom where as the GTI one just has a huge black area.  The grill is slightly TSI-ish... but I like the subtle look.

As for the Recaros, I have the money for them, I just refuse to spend it!  I'm having a hard enough time parting with £1700 for the leather, but its a must given the standard seats colour.

Well, they certainly hug the body. I hope your bum isn't too big, otherwise you might find yourself wedged by the Recaros. What i will say in their favour is that they're surprisingly comfortable on long journeys.  Like Pe3eps, i have the money for them, but not the enthusiasm.

Maybe the GTI is 'pretty' to keep the girls happy and the R is more aggressive to keep the men happy?

I'm considering a change to leather for the R, even though I'm not a fan, because the standard seats do look out of place in a car of that value. Incidentally the new UK pricelist suggests you can now only get the winter pack on the R by specifying leather or the Recaros.

Fair coment, no I havent got a big bum at all.

I ordered the recaros because last time I ordered the mk5 gti i didnt order the xenons and regretted it after.
I dont want to do that again.

It is quite annoying when you get Recaros standard in a focus rs but not in the golf.

I noticed that...but its got to be a mistake surely?
With leather etc you get the heated seats anyway...Xenons you get the other gubbins...so the pricelist before last had it down at £225 for the Winter Pack.
For heated washer jets!
Hmm...

Does anyone know if the leather seats have contrasting grey stitching, as per the Recaros and standard cloth? I seem to recall seeing a photo of a Scirocco R with leather and that had the grey stitching.

Doesn't look like it (the gear lever has the grey stitiching, but the seats don't seem to have it):

Golf R is a very nice car, faster, AWD, and all that, but i much prefer the contrasting red trim you get all over the Golf... really helps to lift the whole car waaay above a standard cooking Golf.  The R just looks too TDI with a bodykit for me.

I just read the review in full. Very good indeed. The only reason the car didn't get the full ***** stars seems to be the price, which is fair in my book. I like the following points made:

- AWD makes the power more usable more of the time
- Suspension settings give the car great composure on all surfaces but also tenacious grip (not true for Audi's S3 which is often too hard)
- Performance is a real step-up from the GTI
- It is a flagship for the Golf range in a way that the R32 wasn't.

I get the impression that the VW team's tweaks make the R substantially different from the Audi S3 in terms of the overall experience offered. All in all, there's not much to complain about. They mentioned that the DSG in Sport mode is a bit too keen to drop a gear when you floor and too keen enough to change up when in comfort. Understood. But when you change gears manually with the paddles - as you should in this car - changes are seamless.

I am really warming to this hot hatch.

I know a solution to this...  :lipsrsealed:  but if you must have a slush 'box I guess the shift map can always be altered to give more desirable change points.

This behaviour doesn't bother me - it was same with Mk 5 R32. D mode changed up too early and S mode too late (embarrassingly noisy and revvy when going through town centres, unless your name is Kev). Manual override or push across to +/- for fully manual is the solution - so all is well.

+10. Absolutely right. Anyone who drives a DSG without using the paddles is missing the point.

They mentioned using the paddles in the evo review but also rightly pointed out that there are times, like when in heavy traffic, that you'd expect D mode to be smooth and hassle-free.

Try doing that with a prolapsed disc! I sat in a R32 with the Recaros when they first came out, about six months after a back injury. The salesman had to help pull me out again! Now I'm all fixed and can get out of them myself, VW put the price up to £Stupid.

Add that too the must have leather & this is an expensive Golf.

Autocar are massively in favour of DSG.  They even put the Scirocco R ahead of all other hot hatches purely on the basis that it was available with DSG when the Renaultsport and Focus RS didn't.

Sorry, mate, but your comment is complete tosh. Autocar is a great mag. Sutcliffe, Pryor, Goodwin, Henry - they're among the best journalists on any autorag. Very objective, good drivers and good writers.

They're right. DSG sets the VW Golf - all versions - apart from the rubbish churned out by Renault, Toyota, Kia et al. The only real issue is that the 'must haves' are VW's fault not Autocar's. They're what make a GTI almost unacceptably expensive.

I just bought Autoexpress and Autocar in the newsagent, and will have a look through them both in a minute.
I have to say the manual GTI gearbox put me off getting a manual R.  It felt really slack compared to my ED30 one.  Plus I fancied trying DSG!

After it goes on about how refined the Golf is and a wolf in sheeps clothing.
From all the 'first drives' I've read so far, the Golf R sounds exactly what I want.  Refined as a Passat on the motorway, faster and better to drive that the Golf GTI, subtle to look at, and not chavvy and loud like a Focus RS.
Ideally it would have been £3k less - but hey ho!!!

Perhaps... but if they're really as limited as VW say then I doubt it.  You can't even get a £3k discount off a GTI - so I can't see them giving you £3k off an R.  Plus, as Booski says, you'd be lucky to get it in 2011!!

My problem is that since my ED30 was written off in March, I've been borrowing cars from people waiting for the R to be released.  By the time it actually comes I'll have been waiting 13 months... so I CAN'T really wait any longer!!!

I think you already saved a few quid by pre-ordering as the New list price is now £30090 (compared to £28930 I think) although about £600 of that is the extra 2.5% VAT which you may have to pay if Delivery is after 28th Feb

I noticed that when I re-specced my car after January - it'd gone up in price by over £2k from what I'm actually paying.  I did manage to get 1.77% discount which was about £650 though.  If the car comes after 28th Feb (which it will) my dealer has agreed to pay half the VAT increase... although if its much later than that I'll be pushing for the full VAT off since I originally put my deposit down in May 2009!!!
