im suffering big time at the mo with the same problem.......................
plus the added bonus of the central locking not working (frozen???)
everytime it freezes i have a right faff about.
this moring i managed to climb in through the passenger door(the only 1 i could open this morning)
then started the car up,thinking some warm might help... lol lol lol
went back out 5mins later and all the doors were locked, now on mine if you cant get the drivers side door open within a short peroid,it locks itself again
i take it ,all the central locking is via the drivers door??? or is that a feature of my full closure alarm????
either way its really starting to p**s me off.........then when the locking finally gives in the bloody doors are frozen solid anyway..ggrrrrrrrrrr
rant over
pat.
-
i had the same issues last winter used lots of deicer on the locks seem to do the trick but it was bloody annoying tho
-
annoying job but take out the locks and grease the barrel and tumblers ;-)
-
iv had the issue once this year, last month i think. I managed to get in using the key though (just). I also couldnt pull the locking pins up from inside once in!
-
lol funnily enough i had this problem yesterday aswell.. but mind doesnt have a key fob... only have keys.... anyway the drivers side door lock will freeze and not allow my key inside the lock lol... passenger side lets me (for now) lol... and central locking works from both doors by the way. not just the drivers side.

Because if the car is locked from the outside using the key then the doors are deadlocked, so if somebody smashed a window and tried unlocking the car by pulling the pin up then they'd fail epically
Only real way into the car is through the boot! I've got a smoothed boot plinth going on mine though so the only lock on the car will be the drivers door as the passenger side is also delocked
-
so why are golf locks so bad . never feally had any trouble with other cars

my mate had a gti last yr, and had the same problems(how i used to laugh at him....who's laughing now lol)
anyway he told me the central locking is run via a air fed pump, could this be why it dont open/close in the winter???
as for the locks........vw used cheap ones????????

I think you misunderstood me, I managed to get inside the car by unlocking it with the key. Once inside i was unable to raise the other locking pins untill the car had warmed up. Once it was warm it worked no problem

Ooh I see! Strange problem then :undecided:
My locks were frozen solid today, drivers lock & boot lock
Managed to get into the boot in the end, my mate opened the drivers side window, and I stuck the key in the ignition to start it and let it warm up haha. Once it was warm the door opened
Took an hour for the passenger side one to open though
-
i had spray de icer in mine tonight so could lock i tl ol
-
same probs for me... driving me nuts....broke the passenger lock yesterday :( easy to fix?
-
Can you spray wd40 in to the lock barrel? I would have thought any water would be displaced and therefore prevent freezing?

Bingo!

Hi had the same prob spray wd40 into the door lock barrells and also spray some on a rag and wipe it around the door
rubbers it spots the door rubbers freezing up worked for me

if ur usin a key to get in, which i do on my vectra atm, then just boil a kettle tip water into a cup, place ur key(metal part) for 20-30 secs and place in lock sould unlock the door ok. HTH

Something really scary happend this morning!
Got up earlyish to go down the barbers, remote central locking didnt work on drivers door (which receives no sunlight in the morning so is the coldest). Key didnt work also, so dipped it into hot water as said which did unlock the door pin, but to my horror the door still would not open :undecided:
I climbed in through the passenger door and tried opening from the inside - still nothing. The locking pin worked fine and worked the central locking, but when i pulled the door handle there was nothing there, no resistance like it was dead-locked. Anyway started the motor, warmed it up, scraped the snow off all the windows etc and still no action from the door.
Came back from the barbers after having to climb in through the passengers, go home and tried again and still nothing so i thought ok lets get the door card off see whats happening.........but then i thought how am i going to get the card off when i carnt open the door or even take the handle off from the outside!!
After a little playing with it, and opening the handle very slowly i could feel a tiny bit of resistance, like it was starting to catch something then all of a sudden it burst back into life. Its not loose or anything now, opens as it use to luckily.
Not sure what happened though, the handle wasnt loose as if the metal link had snapped, but it had no resistance like it should have to open the catch- as if it was dead-locked. But i thought if you opened the lock ok then the deadlock was linked to it and that would disarm also. Im just worried because if the door breaks when shut theres nothing you can do!
-
Are you sure it did not freeze solid Mate. Mine has frozen shut before but never to your extremes. I think other people on here have had the smae problem. The rubbers freeze and the door gets locked shut even though the lock is open. I have to give mine a couple of pulls from outside and then I am in. Touch wood I have not suffered bad this year yet!!!!! Cheers Deano
-
No it definatly wasnt frozen shut. it was something in the lock mechanism i guess. If you have ever dead-locked your door and try to use the handle and it just doesnt do anything and you can feel it doesnt even try the latch.
-
Used to be able to get a special lock de-icer, small can with a thin tube to push in the locks, will enquire next time I'm at the local VAG parts dept (picking up belts and G12+)...
ATM used WD40 but still froze overnight... had the Dead-lock issue at the folks last night took a few attempts to get in.. also suffered the frozen pin on passenger side, the other half had to travel back in the back with the baby (5-ddors!)
Try the old-skool (air-cooled) trick of smearing the door rubbers with some Vaselene see if that helps with sticking doors...
My boot lock seems not to have the little metal cover on it and is full of cr@p (washed a load out with WD last night) and this means I can't get a key all the way in it... :( Could this have come off or is it more likely just stuck in the open position?
Anyone got a guide to removing the locks (doors and boot) so I can give them a good greasing?
-
my locks freeze up all the time, just breathe into them, a few warm breath's and they are good to go...

Bloody typical!!!!! Went out to mine this morning and the drivers side door was froze solid. Pressed the button and the locks opened, pin went up and the door was solid as if locked. All other doors opened fine tryed from inside but no budging it. Warmed the car up a bit and after about half hour the door opened ok. I mainly have the frozen solid problem with my bootlid. Just a bit of frost and its solid whereas the doors are normally ok.

Iv had the same problem with mine :undecided:

That will do it

Spray a bit of WD40 on the locks and inside the lock like when you put your key in a bit spray a little in there, i did that almost 2 weeks ago and my locks havent frozen up once, and i live in canada ! lol
-
There was me thinking I was the only mk3 driver that was climbing in through windows on cold mornings!
-
I
love hate it when my seals are frozen shut, and I have to climb in the back door over the seats to the driver's seat. Makes for amusing entertainment for any onlookers.
-
not had real problems with the golf but been borrowing my brothers corsa  this wknd + the locks were always frozen
answer: get a lighter+ heat up the metal key, if it doesnt work straight away, put the key half in the lock+ then heat the part left sticking out to transfer heat to the lock barrel, your in within seconds
not quite so helpful for non smokers though
-
you mk3 boys have got it easy. Try frozen rear brake calipers in mk2s.

yeah I used to commute in it when it was a 2.0 16v and whilst it was being converted to PD I started work in London either getting the train or biking in. Again, I know I'm special.

Good way to bend your key i'd say doing that?
The frozen lock is the easy part for me, the hard part is having to wait 20 minutes for the dead-locks to un-freeze so i can get in the door! Had the door card off today and covered it in WD40, not convinced it will work but a matter off elimination!
Also diping your key into water before trying the barrel is surely going to make it worse in the long run as the moisture may linger there and freeze on another day, especially as the weather is staying cold it wont evaporate.

how the hell will i bend the key, where do i say that i put any force into turning the key? i just heat it for a few seconds until the ice melts+ it is just like normal.
I wonder sometimes whether people actually read posts or just think up imaginary things that they disagree with
no hard feelings just confused
-
calm down, i may have misunderstood, merely heating my key this morning wasnt enough to get into my car, it needed some force to turn and to actualy get the key into the lock... maybe your locks are not as frozen as mine,
-
carb cleaner  works a treat
-
wouldnt let frozen locks get you down boys :lipsrsealed:

Ive got a weird problem with my drivers side door, whenever its iced over. i dont have too many problems getting into the car but when i do, it wont slam shut. it just bounces off. de-icing the striker takes a while to work, any suggestions??
-
Went to VW today, came out couple of quid lighter with some Lock Deicer, tried it a bit earlier and it works wonders.

I WIN! I WIN!
Still can't get the front locks open (doors seals would probably have been frozen even if I managed it). Spent the whole day climbing in and out of the back doors & had to leave car unlocked . After 40 min drive thought the locks would have defrosted. WRONG! Actually couldn't even get key in the lock when I tried at end of journey! Wind chill??!! Central locking fires but front locks funked!
It's already -10 here so don't fancy trying to budge it tonight with the wd40 I bought. Jammed the back locks down manually for tonight. Probably a bad idea. I have the keys and I can't break into the f*(king thing
Whoever thinks they can just huff a mk3 lock into life     PMSL! You iz crazy man!
-
Going to try wrapping mine in a massive blanket!
-

-
I had difficulty with my garage door this morning, i sprayed a bit of normal de icer on the key, and all over the lock.
Worked a treat.

my central locking was fine today, as were the locks.
but the bloody doors were frozen solid again !!!!!! seals , i think ?????
pat.

Makes me feel a little better reading through this thread just now, knowing I am not the only person standing by my car door for ages in the morning looking like a idiot!
I must spend around 20/30 minutes each morning trying to open the door. I used some WD40 in the locks a couple of days ago, which now allows me to get the key in the lock easier, but I still have trouble unlocking it still.
Be glad when it is summer!
-
I was having major problems with mine towards end of last week, when it was only -2/3. Locks frozen, then when the locks opened the dead-lock mechanism was frozen so was locked out for half hour!
However the solution as said before is WD40. Take your door card off, take your handle off. Spray as much as you can inside the door on the lock mechanism box and where everything goes into it, like wise with the handle and the back of the locking barrel and generally cover it in wd40!
The last week when its been -8 and below it hasnt even stuck let-alone frozen. And it would of frozen without the wd40 as the whole door was one sheet of ice including the handle - but it operated perfectly.
-
in finland we have some spray that contains text "lock melter", works pretty decent.. but sometimes you have to use hair dryer to get into car (-25) :D
-
I have the same problem on my mk3 gti with the locks freezing and the doors not opening but i also have this problem where after ive got into the car and shut the door i cant open the drivers door from the inside so have to open the window and reach my arm out untill the cars warmed up then itll open from the inside again
-
Quite a relief to see other people having the same issues as myself.. I often have to climb over the passenger seat or in through the boot to get to work in the morning.. I've had trouble for a while now, so much so i found the driver side locking barrel coming out with the key, after having snapped off with the force ive been using to open it.
I now need to buy a new locking barrel somehow, does anyone know where is best for this?
Also sometimes when I have managed to unlock my drivers door, the bloody thing won't open. The handle doesn't seem to do anything from inside and out, until the car warms up.
I love my car to bits but i have soooooo many annoying little problems! I need a week or two off work in nice sunny weather to fix it, but thats just not gonna happen anytime soon.
-
thats the deadlocks freezing. i had the same problem. check my previous reply
-
my caddy van does this drives me up the wall.
-
Stupid MK3's, my wifes one froze up thismorning so she took my car!
Looking at the start of the thread with the spraying of deicer, is this not good for the paint?
-
I coated my door rubbers with some special moisture expelling rubber conditioner a few weeks ago, so far no frozen doors which would suggest its doing its job as they'd normally be stuck by now.
-
i get the same problem every year  been froze every morning for the last week and i keep saying to myself... i got to spray WD40 in there and only got round to it last night, when to the car this morning and it opened sweet as a nut
