Title: Age Of You MK6 Owners?
Post by: Davew88 on 20 October 2009, 16:51
Hey Guys, Ive been nosing on the forums for a while now but i thaught it was about time i posted sumit and start asking you guys some questions. Im gunna be 21 in December and im seriously considering getting myself a mk6 GTI, ive looked at the mk5's and they just seem so dated after looking at the mk6's  So im quite prepared to go all out on a Mk6 if i can find the ideal car at the the right price!

I was just wondering how old you guys who already own a mk6 are and if theres anybody my kinda age thats got one already? If so what kinda price are you paying for insurance & how much did the car cost you? also it would be nice to know how you guys (all ages) are paying for your mk6's, outright/monthly, if monthly how much are your payments each month?

Sorry if im being a little nosey for my 1st post, i dont mean to be im just curious lol

I hope nobody has already posted this same kinda question, please dont kill me if they have  :embarassed:

Im sure i will end up asking you guys a fair few more questions before i get one too so i hope you dont mind helping me out.

Cheers guys,

Dave

If you`ve got the money do it,as for insurance there was a topic posted by someone younger than you asking about insurance,if you can find it it would probably be worthwhile reading that, just ignore the arguments

I was 21 when I got my first GTI in 1989 - if you can afford it, do it. It can always be sold if you want to buy a house.

Buy the house first, the house will make you money in the long run. There will be plenty of time for a new gti or the next new car to hit the roads, sounds old and boring i know   :nerd: :nerd:

I'm 46 so possibly one of the oldest GTI owners, I paid for my car with cash outright and am paying £360 fully comp but that is because I had 2 accidents in my Peugeot due to hitting black ice, nothing I could have done but obviously 2 claims makes a big difference to the policy.  I guess I'm lucky it's not any higher than it already is!!

I'll forget you offended the MKV...

I bought my MKV at 26, with only 2 years NCB, 3 points and I paid £900 FC. That does include the missus aged 33, though

I'm saving for a MKVI GTi just now and if SWMBO stopped demanding money for shoes and soft furnishing, i'd get there quicker!

We've had threads like this over on the MKV section.. if you can afford it, do it. :afro:

I just think if im gunna buy a house surley i wont be able to afford a gti when i have a house!?

Bricks n' mortar will be a better investment.

If you are in the position where you can do either right now, you are in a better position than many...

Think yourself lucky id do anything to pay £360 for insurance on a GTI, i will have to be paying upwards of £1000!

im 21.. and I will recieve my gti in 40 days... is the gti your first car?

The GTI will be my second car, i have a Fiesta Zetec S at the moment (dont laugh) Was looking at a Focus ST before but the GTI just seems like a much better car!

I just think if im gunna buy a house surley i wont be able to afford a gti when i have a house!?

I'm older if that makes you feel better....50...Still have my own teeth and hair. Again paid cash. Insurance will be low £200's. My car is on its way.

As the saying goes "There's no pockets in a shroud". To be honest it all depends on your circumstances. The sensible answer is go for the house. But when I was your age and if I could have afforded it, it would be the car.

Thats the thing, you do have to go for it if you can afford it now, you dont know whats round the corner. You could keep putting it off and putting it off and then you may end up not having one at all. If your sure, and you want a GTI, go for it.

Thanks mate for the compliments on the car.

At the moment all I am doing is using a damp cloth and shammy to get rid of the bugs and every day grime. No treatments on the car at all yet, I thought I had read before that the pain needs time to cure and settle before any washing, polishing etc is done to it so I'll sit tight for a few weeks and keep doing what I'm doing.

Dear Sir,
An english teacher in our midst.  My sincere apologies for my inadequate english grammer.  I sincerely hope I did not offend you in any way nor did I intentional dismiss you on this priveleged website.  In future I will hope my english meets your strict criteria.  I understand the need for proper english to be used as todays society of degenerates are unable to read or write.
My age is twenty nine years old.  My first automobile was from brand Volkswagen.  The model was the Polo Sport model.  I offer my apologies for not remembering the car identication number nor can I remember which exact model it is.  My current car is Volkswagen Golf GTI, mark 6(indicates which generation of Golf it is and does not mean the temperature of a kitchen oven).  The Golf is a work car which I use to do deliveries etc.
I currently drive a brand Audi TT (model).  I offer my sincere apologies if I offended any person(s) in this website.  In future I hope we can get past this wholely unfortunate mistake on my part and move on.
I with your recommendation will next week enroll in an english course at my local University.  Of which I can enter through my degree that I have gained in my education.  I will also not recommend my private school as they had failed in providing me a good english education.  I hope to speak to my lawyer next week to try to recup those wasted tuition fees.  The moneys that I hope to recieve, I will donate to your childs education.
I thank you sincerely As I feel sorry is not enough.

Thanks for all the replys guys, I think I'm gunna like it on these forums!

I got an insurance quote a few weeks ago for around £1500 from 'elephant' but that's for when IM 21. Which to be honest I don't think that's too bad considering I paid £1900 for the 1.6 Fiesta Zetec S I have now. So I'm willing to pay that price for the GTI.
It's the price of the car + options that's holding me back more because I'm gunna have to pay the monthly payments for the car because I can't afford the car outright.

I was given some advice once to buy a house you cant afford and a car you can afford to throw away.  Good advice.

I would wait until you had a foot on the property ladder before getting a really nice car, once you have a car like that you will never want to settle for a 'lesser' car.  Which may or may not have to happen if you get a car before a house and find you have to sell it to get the house...

Head says, save for a deposit on a house.  Think about it, mortgage lenders are requiring high deposits these days.  We're back to the early 1980s when I used all my savings to pay a 20% deposit on my first flat - all £4000, that is.  It was nearly four years on from that before I had not only saved up enough for a car, but felt I could also afford to run it.  And then it was a 1.1 litre Fiesta L.  (I loved that car!)

By the way, I was 28 when I bought the flat and nearly 32 when I bought Miranda.

Now, I guess even a 10% deposit is going to set you back over £10,000.  But it's that or make a landlord rich for the rest of your life.

Smart money saves for the deposit on the house first.  The house will probably not depreciate significantly, and it won't wear out either (though bits of it will).  Once pays for all, because you'll recoup the deposit when you sell, and it will be the deposit on the next property.

Then you can start saving for the car.  And make sure you can cover both your mortgage and the car payments.

But I know what your heart is saying.  And it's true, once you've had a great-performing car, you won't want to trade down.

Rolfe.

Nows the best time to get a house, not a car. Im 23 and selling the R32 to purchase mine. Had a Type R when i was 20 then moved on to the R32 when i was 22, if i hadnt bought both with cash then i wouldnt have bothered at such a young age, wont look good when you try and get a mortgage with little savings and a huge debt over you!

If you can afford the car buy it (i mean afford it!) I bought mine with cash so wasnt an issue as i knew i could sell it when i needed for the house. So by next december i should be in a good enough place for a variety of cars i can buy and ill have a house! Looking at either a 335i, range rover sport or audi RS4.

Mortgage advisors been round today and ill pay less on my mortgage than i currently do on rent (£920!) so will be a win win for me!

If you have to get the car on finance then i wouldnt bother mate, get something cheaper you can afford and look forward to buying something like a mk6 GTI once you can afford it, if you have the cash like i did then go for it! I bought something i knew i wouldnt lose money on (ive actually made money) and although it will be hard to sell it and get something not as good (looking at a nice mk2 gti) it will be worth it in the long run

I am 44, should only have about another 3 weeks before my DBP 5 door arrives by which time I will be 45.

Ordered mid July so has been a long wait.

This is a company car though. I work from home alot so the wife will use it as well if she can prise the keys off me.

My family wheels for the weekend is an ML420CDI.

If the GTI is as quick as the ML I will be happy.

41 going on 18

Just a thought, (and possible heresy in the mk6 section), but why not start a little lower down the ladder with a MK2 GTi? A lot more cash left in the bank, and a great car/project to boot. One thing I've learned over the years is sometimes its the anticipation thats the fun part, knowing that you'll reach the summit but that you had a good look at the view on the way up..........

right, taxi for mdss mk6

I'm 55, clean licence, and no claims for over five years (and a "lady driver").

AND I REALLY NEED TO SHOP AROUND FOR INSURANCE, I'M BEING ROBBED BLIND!!!!!

Rolfe.

Go on Rolfe what are you paying for insurance? Yours should be relatively cheap.
What I can't understand is why insurance becomes cheaper when you actually add other named drivers. You would think the liability would increase

34, 3 points, and my missus is 29 no points, sheila's wheels took £260 i think.
I always stick my dad on as named, as I guess they figure that any time a 60 year old is driving it, then the 34 year old with 3 points isn't, so it helps.
Maybe?
I guess I'm old now as its getting cheaper all the time, though we have just moved to a new postcode, which halved the premium on the VXR pre - golf, crime free South Ayrshire is the way to go!
I remember the dark days of more than a grand a year on my WRX, but it was worth it!

Back to the car v house thing, if you want the car and you can afford it, I'd go for the car now.

If you have a reasonable income and few outgoings, you should be able to save, or if you have finance, have it over a short period to get the car paid for as soon as poss. Once you own the car, apart from the running costs that you would have with any car, that's it. It's yours. But you will need to keep it, then start saving for your house.

If you keep the car, depreciation dosn't really come into the equation. You only realise the loss when you cash it in. Look after it, maintain it, keep it clean and the right way up and you'll still have a nice car in a few years time when your buying your house.

In time it will be a really sought after car. One owner, full history etc. Once it gets do about 5 years old, I'd be tempted to buy a cheap daily car, and keep the Golf for weekends and special occasions. That'll keep the mileage down, and even when you are driving your dull daily, it's a nice feeling knowing that you have something nice tucked away at home.

I'm 30 years old and the mk6 GTI is my fourth car. I've already clocked up 1,000 miles on this Candy white bad boy since picking it less than a month ago. Absolutely love it!

Didn't have to run it in, cos it was an ex-demo.

Previously owned a Honda Civic Type-R (2005-2009), BMW 318ti (2000-2005) and my very first car was a French bag of sh!te Citroen Saxo (1.1). Paying just over £500 FC (with Esure), with 4 years NCB. Got my wife named as a driver and the premium went down by 5%. The sad thing is she never drives the car (afraid of wrecking it)

As for the house vs car debate - go for the car - life is way too short

Buy a 6k second hand evo. It'll be faster, you'll pick up more dirty ladies, and you'll still have the cash for the deposit on a house to take said dirty ladies back to.

win all round i say.

Thanks for all your replies guys, i really am stuck in two minds now. Friends and family are the same, some say get the car, some say get the house. :undecided:

Im kinda considering maybe just getting a MK5 for now, atleast i can buy it outright and im not having to pay a car off every month. I know i said they look dated compared to the Mk6 but its still a GTI after all isnt it!  If i was to go for a Mk5 tho id want a decent example, not too old, not too many miles ect ect

Buy the way are the MK5 leather seats the same as the ones in the MK6?

What's more likely to be important to you over the next 3-4 years? I.e. not 'now'?

a) The luuvly shiny GTi..... outside yer maw's house? Or,
b) The house to call your own..... with a more 'economical' car outside it...?

Flipping heck. I was 24 before I got my first car by time I'd been to uni and all that and it was a 1.2 Nova with all the might of 45hp 4 speed!!!!! I'm 42 next week so it's taken me that long to acquire my Mk6. However, I have in the meantime acquired quite a nice house and now pay £550 for insurance fully comp on my GTi and the wife's Saab 93 convertible combined!!! So I suppose it's a personal choice whether you buy the car or the house.
If I was 21 again though I'd be inclined to go down the cheaper car route and buy the house. Get a Mk2 or Mk 3 GTi or (I know I'll get murdered for this) an Astra VXR or something that's significantly cheaper but just as fast. I had to really justify the premium of the GTi over the VXR to myself and I ain't 21 so if I was in a "lesser" position that's the way I'd be thinking.
At least that way you could have the fast car AND the house and in a few years when you're more sorted you could get a super duper GTi or an R!!! Cake and eat it time then!!!!

If you cannot afford to buy the car outright i would get the house! House will increase i value maybe 15K in a short time when recession ends - car wil lose 15K over a few years.

I am 28 and got a house at 23 and still think its the best thing i ever did - My way of planning things is to sort the house and family stuff out and then decide what car the remaining monthly money will get you, rarther than planning where to live with whats left after paying for a car!

Your house is cheaper than a Golf?  I'm 42 too, nice house, bought my first brand new GTI at 21. If faced with being 21 again now I'd still do it that way around. Running a nice house (+ family) costs a hell of a lot more than running a nice car. Different circumstances though I guess, both personally and now with the economy the way it is.

Hi, well if anybody knows this country of mine, you'll find out how Fu(ked up it is. The only country in the entire world with a thing called COE [Certificate Of Entitlement] and ERP [Electronic Road Pricing] despite already having paying a high price to Road Tax, which I find stupid as they base the price depending on the CC of the car. Apart from the Registration and Admin fees incurred to book a car, they also charge 105% Tax for every car that arrives here, regardless of Brand, Make and Model.

Just a little insider, you guys pay like what? . . . $25000 Pounds for you GTI VI there right?
Here, the GTI VI cost $130000 Singapore Dollars. (price fluctuates $2000 to $5000 weekly)
Which, if you do the conversion, will cost $57000 Pounds.

What car can you buy for $57000 Pounds?

I'm 24 years old now. And I own a Honda Jazz since I was 22 years old. Did full NA mods to full Turbo, and now back to bone stock again

I plan to buy the GTI VI next year, but looking at the prices here, with the fluctuating rates, and my financial status, I'm not so sure whether I can own it or not. Maybe a 2nd hand MK V, but still, my heart tells me that the GTI VI has better balls!

I meant buy a cheap car AND buy a house. There'll always be time to get a nice car.
Over the years I've upgraded from the 1.2 Nova to various  "nice" cars (I got my first GTi - a MK3 - at 27) but I know for a fact if I hadn't bought that (or other) cars I could have bought a bigger house earlier than I did or be in a more expensive one now. However, I got to the point where there was a compromise situation for my level of income i.e. a relatively nice house and a relatively nice car. That's the choice I made. I have friends who just don't get the car thing and have nicer houses than me whilst earning similar money but drive around in heaps. That's fine and is the reason why all of this is personal choice.
I just think at 21, however, because you're so young the house is a better bet as you've so much time to get the car later. Again though, it's down to choice and level of income.

My advice would be get on the property ladder asap. The reason i say this is my brother is only a year younger than me he went for flash cars, watches, cloths etc. Then later just rented a flat. Were as i penny pinched and got on the property ladder with an older car. He is now struggling to get on the ladder due to the way house prices have gone in the past 10 years he just cannot afford to buy due to the wage/price difference now even with the financial mess englands in ouse prices are still way up, things i cannot see changing and only getting worse.
