I did try searching but couldn't find anything so apologies in advance if this has been answered already.
I had a GTi MK3 behind me today and it's sidelights were only illuminated in the inner bulb (nearest the grill). My question is really, how easy is this to do - is it just a case of removing the brown wire from the main headlight, and is there a way of swapping the bulbs over so the headlight works there or will the lack of filtering just blind and annoy oncoming people.
My main question is just the sidelights though - is it really that straight forward?
-
do you mean put your headlight where the sidelight is, if so i dont think that will be legal?....
-
No i'm leaving that where it is - I had a MK3 Golf behind me that just had it's sidelights in the inner piece of the headlight (Like it is with the ignition off) and it looked awsome... Just wondered how easy it was to do and then revert back to if need be.
-
Isnt that how it is standard?
Twin headlights, nearest the grill is the sidelight and full beam, and on the outside is the dipped beam?

Thats what I thought but I have a glow from the main headlight on mine too - and the one behind me just had the individual one on with no glowing from the main headlight...
Maybe i'm wrong and mine is normal - I'm probably going mad...
-
Do you have GTI lights fitted? And not non gti single headlights.
-
No i've got GTi ones fitted as they have the separate bit next to the grill...
Fear not - i'm on the look out for some twins anyway.
-
I understand what you're saying.. the inner lamp was lit up like it would be with the ignition turned off but lights switched on?
Think this has something to do with the fusebox.. or so I've read on Vortex.
-
That's dayglo.
Normal, the mainbeams glow dimly with sidelights.

Just remove the DayGlo resistor.

Just remove the DayGlo resistor.
Where the f**k is that thing, I've been looking for it f**king everywhere!!
-
Just remove the DayGlo resistor.
and what will that do? :undecided:
-
Hard to explain, but..
When the ignition is turned on, flick your sidelights on and the headlight bulbs come on very dim WITH the 5w sidelight bulbs, when you put your lights on, the headlight bulbs get brighter.
Removing the resistor will stop the headlight bulbs coming on dim, meaning that when you switch your sidelights on, only the 5w bulbs will light up.
-
like in my picture?
-
so wheres the resistor ???
-
like in my picture?
Was your ignition on?
-
yes. . my engine was running
-
Dim-dip resistor is usually up under the drivers side wing and connected via two yellow wires - just undo the yellow connector and job done.
-
wicked nice one fella

Yup. :)
This dayglo won't happen with HID's FYI :).
-
Perfect, thats exactly what I was looking for!
Do I need to remove the cowling under the wing or is it just a case of looking in from the engine bay?
Many thanks!
-
not removed anything on mine for my lights.
-
Cool, going to give it a go now :D
-
Ok couldn't find it, Do i have to go in under the arch or look through the top of the bonnet?
Thanks.
-
Found it! Result... Disconnected and got some pictures for others too.
Looks awsome and gives a more agressive look to the front of the car (although it does look slightly boss-eyed though!).
Location of the plug on the drivers side...

The resistor itself

The result with the engine running.

Hope these are of help to somebody.

Thanks for that mate! Just nipped outside and unplugged mine
I used to like this 'dayglo' thing, but when I fitted HID's, there wasn't enough voltage going to the bulbs so they just flickered and went out!
Now I've got sidelights woohoo
-
how comes my car has this effect anyway as standard???
and the said switch aint there?
strange!
-
Mine was the same as yours Drew and I hadn't done anything :undecided:

Previous owner disconnected it? Or yours was one of the first years without dim-dip?
-
I explained to my dad what I was doing last night and he swore blind that his N reg VR6 didn't have this 'dayglo' resistor
So today we popped the bonnet on his VR to change the air filter box for a drilled one and had a good look for this resistor and it's non existant lol

I had it on my N reg (96) Passat so just assumed it was still being fitted to all VW's. Guess they had dropped it on the Golf by then.

nope, previous owner my mate!
had the same thing on my old mk3 also.

Did not have this resistor on my 97 valver or my 96 vr so guess vw did away with it on the changeover mid 95.
