Title: Has anyone mistaken or called your MK6 a MK5???
Post by: gtiobsession on 06 October 2009, 19:41
The one thing that is beginning to bug me is that some people still dont give the MK6 enough credit about its looks and insist that the MK6 and MK5 look almost similar  I personally think it is quite distinguishable from an MK5 especially when you put them together,no offence to MK5 owners its an amazing car nonetheless but it looks bloated in comparison to the MK6 .I think VW should have marketed the MK6 as an executive hatch because its interior, infact the whole package puts it in another class. If someone had to mistake my MK6 GTI(which is still in the pipeline  )for an MK5 I would be P1$$ED!they can say goodbye to their eyes!

Never been mistaken for a mk5.  From the side they maybe look similar, but front and back are totally different.

Think most people who aren't car enthusiasts will just see another Golf, and not really register any difference. From a distance side-on they look almost identical, but personally I don't think you can mistake the two. The Mk6 uses the classical VW restrained/conservative approach as apposed to the attempt by the Mk5 stylists to move the VW design language into new territory with big chrome (black for the GTI obviously) grilles and an unforgivably fat rear end.

Simply put, the Mk6 is how the Mk5 should have been in the first place.

but they are very similar cars

i'd hardly be upset if someone confused my e28 with an e12 (which is essentially the same as mk5/6 golfs - just a facelift)

Personally it wont matter a jot to me if they mistake what mk it is. They are both class cars. But I think that people who know about the GTI wont ask that question, and people that dont know about it wont ask it either, they will just ask 'Is that the new one ?'

I've been driving Golfs for years, Mk2, Mk3 and Mk5, not all GTIs though, and I have to admit that I find it hard to distinguish a normal Mk6 and Mk5 from a distance.  They kind of just seem the same.  I've yet to see a Mk6 GTI on the roads though.

VW have a winning formula with the Golf and they would be stupid to radically change it's appearance.  It wouldn't be a Golf otherwise.

You cant even notice 2 red stripes compared to one at the front, or two sperate exhausts compared to two together from a distance ? Sorry but you should get an eye test, and really shouldnt be driving.

I followed a Mk V up the A702 this morning.  The difference in the exhausts was very noticeable.  (Still likely to be cosmetic though.)

I wonder what the slowcoach in front of the Mk V thought when we both overtook him in tandem?  Like synchronised swimming,it was!

Exciting is not the word, remember the rules though, if you dont know sh!t about the differences between a mk5 and a mk6, one stripe at the front its a mk5, 2 its a mk6. If it overtakes you, two pipes together its a mk5, two pipes seperated its a mk6. Then you can get all giddy and clap and sh!t, but only if your not driving and have parked.

It is purely cosmetic as you said.

What was the mk5 owner like ? Did he want to race, or did you have some respect for each other, or ?

Can't say.  He (or she) was in front in the first place, and I didn't try to change that state of affairs.  It was about 9am for goodness sake, and there was heavy traffic ahead that neither of us was likely to get past on the bends after Lawhead.  We only overtook Mr. Slowcoach because there was a gap, and it would have been a crime not to.

I was still following the Mk V until I turned right into Bush Loan to go to work - he carried on towards Embro.

I've no idea if he even noticed there was a Mk VI behind him.  Me, I thought, there's a guy of taste and discernment, he chose the same car as I did, only 18 months sooner.

Or a MK5 with v6 so that's not really a good indicator is it? ha ha ha ha. I normally find going on the reg plate as that tells you how old it is.

As has been pointed out though most joe bloggs public won't tell the difference as it's just a hatchback like they probably can't tell the difference between a MKI and MKII Focus. Not everyone is a car geek.

In all seriousness, the Golf GTI is the best car in it's class.  Be it the Mk5 or Mk6.  It is a brilliant allrounder.  You can have lots of fun in it and it is a great family car.  I will always give a little nod to drivers of all marks of Golf GTIs and I will never try to burn them off.  TDIs are a different matter though!

Agreed, I get quite a few waves from MK5s and below when out in the MK2. MK6 GTI drivers so far don't wave but I guess many haven't settled into GTI ownership enough to know that other GTI drivers will wave.

I do however like to "burn them off" as you put it, but only when safe to do so and like the look of surprise and respect on their face when I'm still next them by the next set of lights.

The Mk2 GTI was the one that I always wanted but being only a teenager at the time it was out of my reach.  My dad wasn't into cars that much so when we bought a Mk2 Golf, it was the Golf Driver

I inherited that off him and have driven lots of Golfs over the years.  All apart from the Mk4 and 6.

I do however like to "burn them off" as you put it, but only when safe to do so and like the look of surprise and respect on their face when I'm still next them by the next set of lights.

nick

Ok.. whats the stats on that mk2 puppy??? Just so i know if I ever come across you at the lights

140ish bhp 1.9 8v and stripped out. MK5/6's only start to pull away above 80mph until then it's even stevens unless they've had a remap.

Nick

I've read some sh!t in my days, but thats just class.

i know, they crack me up!  have you noticed as well that they always drive old rust buckets that they rag the fook out of and like to race people with brand new more powerful cars?  grow up people, maybe if you spent less time "racing" and more time working you might be able to buy a new car

if i wasn't actually an adult i would consider racing nick just to put him in his place.  but i'm not a child, i don't have a small thingy, so i don't feel the need to race to make myself feel better about my life and lack of girth.

Hey matchboy, I'm up for trackday when you are. Goodwood circuit ok for you in March? It'll be about £200 for the day and you'll need a spare set of front tyres to get you home afterwards and a helmet. I'll have a video camera set up in the car so I can put it up on the forum afterwards so everyone can see the outcome.

As for being an Adult, I'm 31 and married so I think I qualify. As for thingy size it's not exactly relevant.

nick

P.S I ought to warn you in advance I've beaten MK5 GTI round silverstone so it might not be as easy as you think.

well done you, i'm really impressed.  next you'll be telling us that you beat porsche's too

and as much as that would be fun, i'm not lewis hamilton and have no interest in f**king my car up by taking it round a track.  but thanks anyway!

I did beat porches (928's if you wanna look up what they are) yes, also some TVR's and Lotus's although the TVR's were only beatable in the wet as in the dry they had better straightline traction out of the twisties. The car has also clocked several sub 9 min laps of the ring (MKV DSG does it in 8:53) although admitadly with the last owner behind the wheel not me.

You wouldn't like it. It's bumpy, has no interior and it's noisey. You're money would be better spent on a MK6 R which I reckon with a few major tweaks could see sub 8 secs (for reference the new Skyline GTR is sub 8 min car). Sub 6 is not possible with any road car at the moment, I don't even think any full race cars can get close to 6 mins. You'd have to average approx 130mph round the 13 miles to get close to 6 mins.

do you know the difference between seconds and minutes?!   i believe the golf r will be touching 0-60 in 6 seconds without any tweaks.  why would i give a sh1t about how quick your car or any car goes on a track?!  i don't live on a track, and i don't use a track on my way to work!  in future, if you are going to reply may i suggest you actually read the post you're referring to first.

Ha ha that's a fair cop, I did miss read your post and I for that I am sorry.

As for track times it's the best distinction for real world performance as it inlcudes turns and different surfaces. Some cars can be blinding in a straight line but if they don't go round corners or brake very well then the performance in a straight line is a waste of time. This is why TG have to lap time board. It shows how just power alone will not make a quick car.

i confuse all new cars tbh, golfs, peugeots, seats. they all look the same. designed for soft pedestrian crashes etc rather than aesthetics. the mk6 is just the new jelly to come out the eurobox mould

exactly!

nick... leave the two mk6's alone now... its obvious they are not interested in beating a rust bucket round a track

and boys... after you have finished your condescending remarks towards nick about him being a boy racer, having a small thingy, being a child etc... you are so way off the mark it is untrue. what Nick IS: a veritable asset to the VW community that who is more than willing to help and advise people, get his hands dirty for the price of a cup of tea and a bite to eat and someone who has more dub in his little finger (or little thingy) than you will EVER have in your entire body. unfortunately you won't ever understand this. you wouldn't ever take the afternoon off work to help out a forum member because they were stuck, wouldn't give up an evening or a weekend to bury yourself under someones car to help get it through an MOT... there are plenty more 'Nicks' on here... I am just glad that there are only two of you.

It does appear they share the same philosophy and outlook on life

We have our own 2 man clique, care to join ?

No ... I try and see (and respect) everyone's point of view and refrain from abuse if at all possible.  For those reasons, I'm out.

You do realise that was a dig at us, then you go on to say you refrain from abuse.

I thank you for your reasons, but I was telling lies, we dont want mk5'ers anyway

Come on now, thats not abuse!  Anyway, I didn't say I was averse to the odd sly dig

I call the museum there the BC museum, might be called the natural history as another name. Yep, Butchart gardens are gorgeous they are down at Brentwood Bay where I spent a lot of time growing up. It is a fantastic place, the people are warm and friendly and very welcoming. I unfortunately (sorry Scotland) have a Scots accent now as I've been away for so long so its hard when talking to the folks back home and sometimes I can feel out of place.

what a great thread! mk2 trackcars ftw

i confuse all new cars tbh, golfs, peugeots, seats. they all look the same. designed for soft pedestrian crashes etc rather than aesthetics. the mk6 is just the new jelly to come out the eurobox mould

Now now.. lets not tarnish all new car owners with the same brush

Granted there are some people here with serious issues.. mention no names but you know who im talking about when I say VW-Kev-Matches-Boy.. jeez i should have seen that coming. Sounds like a bad combination anyway :undecided:

Putting matchboys name along with mine when your saying someone people have serious issues is a bit unfair. Me, I can accept whatever anyone says as I really dont care, but matchboy is hardly the foul mouth ranter like I am.

  cheers kev!  it just shows you can't have an opinion on a forum without getting flamed

mumbles, It's called a clique, exactly what I (and others) have been up against since I joined this forum. It's rife in other parts which is why I extremely rarely post elsewhere. It's nice to have one in this section, it means I can fit right in.
