Hi
I am just about to pounce on Ebay
But hoped anybody could quickly help me, I have read that sometimes the MFSW doesn't always click with the RNS display, and VAGCOM is needed.
A garage local to me has VAGCOM, will they know what to do to fix stuff?
And does the air con display show on the RNS , I guess it does as would the parking radar?
Thanks again
Nick

will require vagcom, both mfsw and air con stuff will work

Do you not need to update the FW for the aircon to work?
Especially if its an older version?

Thats a good point. I naturally assumed he has the latest version. May want to check what version it is before you buy
A, B or C. with C being the latest
-
Righto!
Well,I went for it, it is the version with the part number ending in B.
How the hell do I update firmware? I am sure I read it can fubar the unit, but that said I have no idea how to do it!
Do you think any garage that has VAGCOM will be able to do what I need?
Still waiting on the GPS aerial before I can perform the surgery, so it'll be the weekend I guess (I'll need an empty house as I tend to turn the air blue with stuff like this/ assembling flat pack etc!)
Sorry if am asking basic stuff, but I din't fare too well with searches.
Thanks again
Nick

I have the B version, I have also owned the A version. I think only version C will work with the Air Con display. I also have VagCom and know of no way of programming a A or B unit to show the Air Con. As stated you can indeed update the FW however I have researched this many times. It is exceptionally risky and can indeed 'brick' the unit.
My suggestion is that you leave the unit as it is and just VagCom it to work with your MFSW if its doesnt already do so when you connect it. The GPS antenna sits and works nicely on the small lip under the plastic air vent. That means it is completely out of sight and a great place to locate it if you havent yet done so.
-
I updated my FW - it took about 45 mins and was a fairly pain free experience!
I don't have a car yet, so I simply plugged it into a 12V 3amp supply, and popped in the update disk. It asks you a few times if you want to proceed, and then you leave it to it.
Once its done, it reboots - and suddenly accepts 32gb memory cards
If you have a search on here you'll find a topic about upgrading the FW. If not, I'll post you a link when I get home!
-
You can find the latest firmwares here: http://www.my-gti.com/1198/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-2660-2662-2664-2666-2668
You just need to download the 4 parts, then open it with winRAR so that it extracts them to 1 file. Burn this file with Nero onto a decent brand of DVD (just to be safe!) - then plonk it in your RNS and wait 45 mins.
Easy peasy!!
-
Haha!
That last post mad me feel like my dad on a computer!
What on earth is Winrar?
I have found an official cd of the update on ebay for 30quid? i am keen to take the risk factor out of it a bit, or may as well have flushed the 500 down the lav!
My current FW is 800, HU was made June 2008, so it would be nice to get it all "new". How on earth do I get it powered up without it being in the car?
I am a layman at this stuff, didnt realise i was quite such a techo retard!
Cheers again

The ebay software at £30 will no doubt be the same as the one in the link!!!
Just remove your old head unit and plug this one in. You don't have to fit it properly as all you want to do is connect it to the power leads. Once the firmware has upgaraded, you can fit it correctly then.
-
Yes the ebay software may be the same, but at least its on the disc right?
I am scared of "bricking" the machine, but, that said, am downloading the files at the mo, thanks for the linkage.
Seems a bad start that the files are skoda!
rather excited about all this, sad eh!
-
The files aren't Skoda - so don't worry about that!
Whether you buy the disk for £30, or download this one makes no difference! There is still an equal chance of 'bricking' your unit - which is about a 1% chance.
WirRAR is a program like Winzip (surely you've heard of that?!) but it can split the files you compress into however many bits you want. This makes it easier to post on the internet! Instead of posting a 400mb file, its split into 4 x 100mb. Easier to upload and download. Anyway - computer lesson over! Download a trial of WinRAR - and open the first file with it. It will then extract all 4 into a directory - which will give you a file called "cd_4.754.301_C_EU_9.242_t300_BMPQSBT5PQT5TOTO_C3C4AC5CC6.nrg" - which is a Nero image file.
Burn it with Nero on a decent branded DVD using the slowest write speed.
I powered my unit up on a table using a seperate power supply. It has to be capable of supplying 12V and at least 3amps - the VW head unit is quite power hungry! If you want to do this, you need to connect positive wires to pins 15 and 16 - and negative to pin 12. This will make the unit boot up and ask you for the code. If you use a PSU that has less that 3amps, it will cut out when running!
All you need to do is put the disk in, and follow the on screen prompts. After a few minutes it will start the update and it has progress bars on the screen (like in the pics on the website I posted). It will restart a few times during the update - and mine took about 45 mins. When its finished it gives you an Update Complete message and then restarts after you say OK.
-
Forgot to mention...
I'm HOPING you got a key code and a Map Disk from your eBayer?
If you are on version 800, there is a good chance that updating the FW will erase your maps.
Tell you what... PM me your name and address etc, and I'll post you the FW update disk I used, and a map disk. It'll save you any hassle!
-
Hi,
Sorry was away all yesterday, thanks for your help and patience!! More the patience!
Will do a PM now
Thanks again, I am bricking it about bricking it!
Cheers

And a very good service

Peeps, what all does the new firmware give you, apart from the SD Card to 32GB. Does the air con display now work as well?

yep. although that works with version B also. also gives you slightly new graphics.
-
How does the aircon display work then, does it just appear when you adjust the climate control or what? Any pics of a screen shot anywhere? Ta

yep just pops up on the screen. the rns already has the functionality bult into it.
-
ok thanks brilliant. My R32 is Oct 06. I am reading up about this battery drain issue. Is that likely to affect me? I also have the Fiscon Bluetooth kit, any word on anyone having an issue with it after the upgrade? I assume if I do have issues I can revert back to original FW - assuming it can be downloaded from somewhere.
-
i upgraded from an A > B then from B > C with no issues. I also have the fiscon kit fitted with no drain issues. Have heard you can go back to an earlier version if you brick it but fortunately it didnt happen to mine.
btw you do realise the air con display info will only work on the mk6.
-

Lol ok, thought it worked on the MK5 as well. No need to upgrade then......after all that
-
Synnea the air con will show on your screen but you need to buy the new aircon panel from the mk6 or Passat CC but upto now there is no climate panel cover to fit the new air con with the mk5 dash.
There is a big thread on VWNavi.com about the climate on RNS screen.

ok thanks, ill check on vwnavi.

I put the 2 disks in the post tonight by first class delivery - so hopefully you should get them for the weekend (if the postal strikes don't get to them first  )
-

Does it play movies direct from SD card ? If so, what format ?
-
sorry to mislead, i just stuck a dvd in the hole, "don't mess with the zohan!"
and it works a treat
-
No no you didnt, but if you get a chance could you try a film from SD ? A divx or something.
Also, I assume the RNS 510 is region locked to B ?
-
sorry boss
i have no SDs, but I will investigate the region thingy
half helpful!

Thanks buddy appreciate it.
I'm about 99% sure that you can't play movies from the SD card.
I've never found any mention of it when looking on the web, and it didn't recognise the DIVX or MP4 films that were on my 8gb SD card when I tested it after doing the update. It just had my video folder as empty, and my music folder full of MP3's!

Cool thanks for that, one final question, what about divx for example from the dvd ? Did you happen to test that ?

I haven't tested that - and as my RNS is sitting in a box under my compuer desk - I can't!!
-
sorry to butt in with another question, but how much have you guys been paying for the RNS510? around £500 - £550? All coming off ebay? Any recomended sellers I should look out for?
-
500 - 550 is about right, some are 600
My guy was a one off, and I took a chance I think , but i met him face to face, rather than risk the post never coming having sent my money to him!
A lot of the lithuanian guys have lots of feedback, you have to go with that really.
Lord only knows where they are sourced, but I bet you could say that about a lot of ebay stuff.
Good luck, well worth it by the way
cheers
-
Mine was £510 from Lithuania. The code was written on a tiny sticker on the unit and it was full of music! The guy told me it was from a smashed up car - but its more likely it was nicked out of something.
It was in very good condition with a few minor marks on the shiney face bit.
They all seem to be £500-600 on eBay - with UK sellers selling for a bit more and NEW units come in at about £900
-
Cheers lads for the quick reply, came back off holiday with spare 200 euros which is going towards an RNS510. I take it all the ebay ones are used, but in newish condition then. Fleabay it is then. Will be my second mod after the smoked wing mirror indicators I fitted.
-
Quick question - when retro fitting the RNS-510 where would you recommend for the GPS antenna?
-

under the front of the dash. mine seems to work fine there.
-
Nice one - is it accessible from behind where the RNS 510 will go - I don't fancy dismantling anything!
-
Graeme - have a look at this...
http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/297235.aspx
VERY simple
-
I had read that fitting guide which was actually what prompted me to post – I was unsure what kind of GPS reception you’d get by having it tucked in behind the radio like on that guide?

Thats my guide pal and i haven't had one problem what so ever regarding GPS reception

mine went in there too, bluetac to keep it rattle free, no probs whatsoever

Thanks pal, it's not the best but it does the job. I couldn't find anything when i wanted to fit mine so made that incase anybody else needed help
-
There can't be an awful lot of metal / shielding parts in the dash as I can happily sit my TomTom in the ashtray compartment and it hold the signal without a problem.
-
I fitted an RNS-510 earlier this week, seems great although haven't had much time to play with it yet.
Climatronic info displays on the screen Ok, I can control basic functions with the MFSW but my understanding was some basic navigational info should be displayed on the Highline, have I missed a setting or is it a VAG COM job?
Also how can I check firmware and maps versions?
Graeme

Bump, anybody know on these q's?

To get the firmware: on entering the car i.e. after you unlock and get in, don't put the key in ignition, just turn the unit on by hand, immediately press and hold SETUP for 15 seconds, release and you will have the hidden menu screen.
If it doesn't work start over again.
Have a look at http://vwnavi.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=51 (http://vwnavi.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=51) as its where I got the above info.

Think that only works pal with firmware versions below 2660

Actually it only works on firmware below 1100

To get the Navi display on the MDI the RNS510 needs coding
You need to enable BAP byte 7 bit 7 on channel 37 Navigation.
Pre MKVI cars never had BAP so its probably not enabled
-
Does anyone know how to record voicetags in the navigation menu?
