Leather upholstery takes a fair bit of looking after, but even with the standard cloth trim, I am beginning to get the urge to put some leather cleaner/conditioner on the (leather) steering wheel and shift knob/gaiter.
Is this really necessary to prevent the leather cracking (the wheel in particular must surely suffer from our sweaty hands), or am I just sad? :)
-
leather conditioner once a month
-
Use leather cleaner and conditioner, though I only do mine about 4 times a year and it's fine though I only do 6k miles a year...
-
Well, I never touched the Peugeot's leather seats in coming up 12 years and they're still fine. If the VW ones are that much work, I'm glad I got the DSG instead! :smug:
Rolfe.

my missus does it most nights

Theres always one isnt there :D

sorry, couldn't resist it!! and everyone thought it anyway!
-
I don't put wax on my knob . . .
Seriously, I've done the GTI once in three years - and the leather is just fine. The car gets parked outside in all weathers, including bright sunlight - and not had any issues at all.
-
i did once, but it really irritated my helmet (sorry couldn't resist)

This could only have been asked in the MK6 section

If I had an RS4 I wouldnt be too bothered about a MK6 tbh

i don't like them, my missus has an a4 (not an rs4 i know) and its a lovely motor but i'm not a big saloon car type of guy - they are for fat balding old men - so if i was offered the choice i would still go for the gti!
-
I was lucky enough to do an Audi driving day at Silverstone and got the thrash an RS4 around the track (6 MPG at the end of the day :D), its biblically quick for a salon car. I agree though, I much prefer the smaller hatch back shape of a car (hence having the GTI ). Dare I say it, but I would rather have an E92 M3 over the RS4  (purely looks, a shallow fatherless son).
Id also still have either of them over the GTI, but then who needs money anyway

Two comments - build quality, and wet roads. The M3 is mullerd on both! :smug:
But yes, the RS4 and GTI are two very different cars. But both have very valid 'plus points' over each other. The boot on the RS4 is massive - and I can fill it up and disappear for a month long motoring hol with everything I need, whereas the GTI boot is much smaller. But in terms of 'on the limit' handling, the GTI is a much easier car - whereas the RS4 is much, much harder.
Oh, and how many GTIs will let you have power on oversteer?
And don't forget the noise! :smug:

So you obviously havn't driven an RS4? :smug:

The ESP in the RS4 is amazing though. We did a scenario to test the ESP where they got us to floor it to 70/80 in 2nd gear and then do a quick swerve around some cones and then come back on line, EVERYONE sent the back end flying when they correct the wheel to get back on line, turned the ESP on and I was amazed how "easy" it was compared to having it turned off.
And don't forget the noise! :smug:
The "S" button needs to be pressed ALL the time :D :D
I know this is going off topic but I think we have had enough talk of waxing our knobs ;)

i have actually, my brother is stinking rich (the complete opposite to me) and has had various cars over the years - not denying the rs4 is a monster, lovely car. but not for me! as previously stated, i prefer a hatch, i'm not into old man's saloon cars. its the same as i'm not into x5's or touregs or anything like that - just not my style! plus let's face it, as per top gear, audi drivers are c0cks! he he JOKE!

TT owns one so they cant be far wrong
;)

Yup, and it is massively better than the ESP system used on the Golf.

But with practice, you can actually control the rear end very effectively with the ESP fully off. And 99% of the time, I always turn off the ESP, both in the GTI and the RS4.
Whilst ESP is genuinely a superb piece of technology, it seems to be actually 'dumbing down' true driver skills of car control. Just like airbags, which then make the driver think they can drive at 80mph on the motorway 3foot from your ar$e! Ditch the drivers airbag, put a six inch spike in the steering wheel - and watch driver 'behaviour' improve.

Exactly, and I ain't no balding old man. OK, I do have grey hair, but was grey at 21 . . .

Whilst I sort of agree with you, having experienced first hand how a car reacts I wouldn't like to be in that situation we was put in (having to suddenly swerved and then swerve back at reasonably high speeds) in real life with the ESP off.

Oh, I agree. But if/when you do turn off the ESP, you must be able to give 100% to the task of 'driving'. No screaming kids, nagging SWMBOs, fiddling with the iPod, posing in your cool shades - or what ever. Beacuause if you DO find you need to swerve at all, then you havn't been paying full attention to the roads around you. :smug:
Get some advanced driver training, and you'll be seriously amazed at just what the 'average' driver missed due to simple lack of observation.
-
You say that, have you seen the Volve advert !? What if theres an elephant that suddenly blows water all over your windscreen ! :D :D
Dont tell me you saw that coming :D

Just going back to the M3/RS4 issue.. A good friend of mine owned an rs4 from new and it had to go back to the dealers 12x in 8months of ownership. He decided enough was enough and made the jump to the M3.
In his opinion the RS4 was more usable as daily but very poor build quality and little niggling issues made it a pain to own. The M3 on the other hand he says has been untouchable for quality and hasnt had a single thing go wrong in 2yrs ownership. Also doesnt hide the fact that in the dry the M3 would murder the RS4. So just to make sure it does so in the wet too... hes modded his to around 500bhp . How that helps him off the line is a mystery, but in gear it goes like sh1t off a shovel.
-
Has he stuck a SC on it to get that or just done loads of little things?
-

Aint got a scooby. Didnt get a chance to have a blast... but it did look mighty mean sat in his garage (minus the scratchs on his roof from next doors car :embarassed:)
Quite sure hes had a few bits upgraded and a remap... sure he knows what hes doing
-
Reason I ask is its hard to get big rains from just a remap on an N/A engine.
With regards to the scratch caused in his CARBON FIBRE !! roof by his neighbour, there would be murders in my street if that happened to me lol
-

I seen his eyes grow in size and steam start to come out of his ears when I asked him about it  Did tell him if he pi$$ed on it, it would keep the cat off. Think hes just put it down to weight reduction in the end, poor guy

Happens to me every morning - my neighbours pet elephant is everso naughty!

Hmmmmmm - that just sniffs of utter incompetance by the stealer! I've had some shocking examples on my own RS4 - but these have ALL been stealer induced.
In his opinion the RS4 was more usable as daily but very poor build quality and little niggling issues made it a pain to own.
I'm sorry, but he must be the only person in the world if he honestly thinks that Audis have 'poor build quality'.!
The M3 on the other hand he says has been untouchable for quality and hasnt had a single thing go wrong in 2yrs ownership. Also doesnt hide the fact that in the dry the M3 would murder the RS4.
Nope. In the dry, the Audi S4 leaves the M3 in its wake - and it wouldn't stand a chance against the RS4. Or his he just referring to a straight line 1/4 mile blast - which seems to be certain peeps 'benchmarks'! :undecided:
So just to make sure it does so in the wet too... hes modded his to around 500bhp . How that helps him off the line is a mystery, but in gear it goes like sh1t off a shovel.
Then he must be a better driver than Tiff Needel, if he honestly thinks he can handle 500bhp in the wet! Does he always try pi$$ing higher up the wall than you in the pub bogs too?
-
I was waiting for that one TT
tbh it mostly his opinion.. but I think your right about the dealer problems. thats where most of his troubled seem to lay. Any car can have defaults new, but its down to the dealership to get them sorted; quickly, efficiently, and most importantly correctly. Im quite sure in his case they didnt get any of them right.
Same with the "murder" quote... im quite sure he never tested them against each other (as that wouldnt be possible) but did say in his opinion if its dry the m3 would no doubt beat the RS4. I wouldnt have a clue but would love to watch and find out
although this may sway the argument in his favour... :lipsrsealed:

My Audi and VW stealer are both part of the same firm, and they also include Skoda, Mercedes, Smart - in my city, and the next, and the next after that. And their bodyshop is truely horrendous!

Sommat for your M3 matey - (http://www.jlosee.com/images/RS4/PDF/M3vsRS4Scan.jpg) - :smug:

Fair play.. but unless they change their dealers I dont think he will be interested. tbf its such a close call no one can say that one is clearly better than the other. Guess it just boils down to presonal preference in the end.

there is no argument anyway, the m3 is the better car and is the benchmark in its class. period.

I'd agreed if that class is the saloon version. There is no M3 estate sadly as I think the RS4 Avant is one of the ultimate all rounders out there.

agreed. but why have an avant, they are ugly cars!!!
-
I have a soft spot for practicality. An avant is pretty good looking imo and is like an uber hatch. Perfect for golf, dogs and airport runs :)

If estates are your thing then that brings the good old m5 and rs6 into play :lipsrsealed:

M3 against Audi, here is an advert campaign some of you may have seen, first BMW started. (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2648/3860052854_807646de2a.jpg)

Then Audi replied. (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3468/3859266729_2bd1779b93.jpg)

nah, waaay too expensive and too too large. RS4 Avant is just about right for me, but too big for the missus, hence we're going for the Golf GTI

<Yawn> Dream on. The ONLY place the M3 is better than the RS4 is on a track, and a bone dry track at that!

And the RS6 will literally muller the M5. Its twin turbo 5 litre V10 is utterly awesome, and the RS6, even in Avant flavour, handles like a dream, considiering its weight.

its just the usual with BMW, audi and mercedes.. whatever comes out later is just that little bit beter than what the other has brought out, and so it continues..... :undecided:

The M3 is absolutely awesome to drive. The RS4 is the better all weather rocket. Both got fabulous normally aspirated engine! Simply the best £50000 pounds car out there if you exc. the lotus evora and cayman s!
The RS6 is a bit like those big AMG cars. Awesome in the straight but a bit slow-witted round the corner---you can never disguise weight with just bhp. I think BMW still produce the best car for the family man!

But the Evora and Cayman are not four door five seat saloons - so don't really enter this particular equation.

Have you ever driven the new RS6 in anger? Because it categorically DOES handle in the twisties. And you can get the back end out on the power, and control it too, unlike the BMW! :lipsrsealed:

 Driving a RS6 in anger will definitely ensure a lengthy stay at Her Majesty pleasure!
No! Its my best mate who contemplate to change his M5 for the RS6. We were one of the first who went for a test drive. Amazed by the straightline speed and the midrange-torque is huge---we conclude this car is a estate car with a supercar engine. Strange to say the car got too much torque for everyday use not to get into any form of trouble with the authority. The steering is also slower than the M5 and the brakes were hard to modulate. I trust his opinion cause he races touringcar! The M5 is a lot more useable.
