Title: Torque Gain
Post by: SuperTrooper on 30 July 2009, 16:01
Hey guys, after reading up on a few things, im looking to get a good torque gain out of my Mk3 16v,

Everyone shouts about BHP, but personally i think if you've got more torque than BHP it will be a faster car.

So far im car is standard as such,

Its got a K&N cone filter on it which i will be getting rid of soon and be replacing it with a Stock air box and panel filter,

Im looking for the best way to gain torque.

Ive also been looking into the 1.8T conversions.

Advice & suggestions please

when you modify an engine it increases (or loses in some cases) both torque and hp, you cant choose.

You need torque and hp to have an efficient and good engine, not just tons of torque but no hp.

Gain good torque you would be looking at some sort of forced induction (Supercharged or Turbocharged).

You could start by removing some restrictions from the exhaust system, get a bigger bore pipe and sports cat helps a little torque.

Better cams.
that looses torque at the bottom end!

Leave well alone for a few more years, as the Mk3 rusts it's power to weight ratio increase in your favour

Interesting article on camshafts, torque and power if anyone can be bothered reading it. Goes on a bit.      http://www.cannell.co.uk/Technical%20Articles/pwr_tq_explain.htm

Expensive but im pretty sure if you increase the compression or decide on a bigger stroke then you will have some torque gains, and the turning power will beef up but after all that... just buy yourself a vr6 lump and fit it or have it fitted???

Just what I know... and would suggest... :D

You cant increase the stroke, only the bore by means of a rebore and new pistons.

Thats amazin, so what can you go to by diong that and the max safe rebore?

Would the pistons not hit the valves though if you increased the stroke?

No because the pistons we used were shorter to allow the longer stoke, the block had to modified as well for clearance, was a awesome engine however so much torque.

Fit a good four branch manifold(no not one off ebay)and you will gain torque, bhp drivability, and it will pretty much erradicate the flat spots.

Yes its all about gas flow, more gas in and more gas out.

that looses torque at the bottom end!

That depends on the cam choice, and headwork done.

I got a 25 BHP gain out of my head and cam set-up...with a gain it torque everywhere.

If you are careful about selecting cams and setting them up, you'll not always loose torque.

A good example of this is the mk2 1.6 and 1.8 carb engines.
The block is the same for both engines. The crank and pistons are different to allow a longer stroke.
The bore is same for both.

If you are careful about selecting cams and setting them up, you'll not always loose torque.

Doing the cams alone will lead to loss of bottom end torque.
However as you state, combined with head work this won't always be the case.
