Right people, gonna buy a camshaft for my 8v gti.
Had a look at bahn brenner motorsport, all good and cheap until I find out postage! costs more to post than the actual price of a camshaft (£130ish to post).
So been looking round but cant find websites that sell cams :undecided:
Had a look at Kent, and piper, and couldn't find price for Kent cam, but piper was about £175.
newman cam is £145 for a 276, so pretty decent value. Opinions please?
-
ok, found the kent GS23H cam. 276 degrees and all round very good from reviews.
Anyone can assure me I wont need to modify anything to make it fit? I don't want to start fitting it and finding out it doesn't clear enough or that i need to invest in a vernier pulley.
Just use the OEM pulley and OEM timing yeah?
-
I would spend the extra for a vernier pulley worth it, mate has on on his :lipsrsealed: VTS :lipsrsealed: and loves it. But yea I don't see why you cant use the std pulleys.

no can do amigo. Cant stretch the wallet as far as that. the 150 for the cam is stretching it alot already.

yer true although I wanna do the cam this month. You passing Bournemouth? Tomorrow I aint about at 4 dude  back in lymington by then and at the gym lol

guys, need the advice pretty quickly. Will I be able to fit the 276 cam without having to modify anything and will I be able to use the standard pulley with the standard factory timing?
-
I'm pretty sure you can just wang it in but you won't get the best out of it without the vernier pulley. Might as well save and get both as changing the pulley later will be more expensive than doing both at the same time.

yeah vernier is on the to do but would have to wait a fair while.
Why would it be more expensive?
-
Cause you'll have to remove half the stuff you remove to fit the camshaft again when fitting the pulley.

yeah but I'm doing the work, aint paying no grease monkey to fiddle with my car lol

Standard pulley will be fine, try TSR.
TSR for the vernier? cheers dude :afro:

I would not bother with a vernier pulley to be honest, well worth trying TSR for the cam however.
oh i see. well I had a look on their website but couldn't find anything about cams
-
Well worth calling them, they deal with Kent plus used to sell their own.

Does it come with bearing shells? allways worth doing when swapping a cam, i would save and do the lot in one hit
How old is your belt and tensioner as for £40 it's got to be worth it unless its fairly new, sorry i am making this expensive for you
I was looking at this kit but will probs just go down your route as i am broke, Mortgages suck

No bearing shells on a Golf head, but yes well worth doing cam belt.
-
cam belt, yes I'll be doing that hopefully, was done 30k miles ago but with cam belts there never is a minimum interval really, always good to have a good condition one.
Vernier I'll be buying but at a later stage, for now standard pulley will do.

Sorry bearing caps, mine were fubared on the old MK2 the new cam had too much float so i had to wait another week for the new ones and i hate busses, head half was still grooved but i polished it out and bedded the new cam in with paste worked a treat but i had to take the head off.
Power was better and more spread out from 3.5 to 5.5 revs and felt a lot quicker in 3rd gear
Worth it in my opinion
