i have recently got a 1995 gti 2l 8v. the car is mint aswell as the engine. i wanted the 16v really but this car only had only done 63000 miles so couldnt resist. i was wondering what was the best way to beef the engine up (make it faster) without ruining it. and do induction kits actualy make a difrence.

any ideas will be apreciated

Induction kit & a performance exhaust won't do any harm, not really going to get any power gains, but better response from the engine when you put your foot down.
A cold air feed is the best, i.e. K&N cone filter with a dedicated breather pipe or something like the BMC CDA kit.
The thing that's going to get you the most BHP from that engine is a good & proper service though, either by yourself or book it in to a good garage - I advise VAG parts throughout even if they cost a few more pennies!
Other than that unless you want to spend SERIOUS money (superchargers etc.) then just be happy aspiring to get the 115bhp it should have! :afro:
Welcome to the forum! :D

cool thanks yea gonna have a good service done first off. think i will get the induction kit . just out of intreset around how much would it cost to have a supperchager fitted and how much extra power would it gain.
-
and oviusly would u recomend it

There is no point sticking a SC on it, if you want more power your a better of selling the 8v and getting a 16v (is the blunt way of putting it).

Unless you wan't to be different....there is a few people, on here and on edition doing this mod.

supercharging the 8v is becoming common now (thanks to the mini and cooper )..have a look in the maintenece section at the top of this page for loads of info
oh and an 8v with supercharger will give 160bhp (ish) but all that torque low down  (I'm biased as i run and prefer the 8v and its lazy nature)
-
An expensive mod to be different imo.

Arn't they all?

well i was thinking of being diffrent lol any ideas on a rough price for the compleate job with all the parts fitted
-
Parts and fitting your looking around £2500-3000 using new decent parts (less for used or cheap parts but finding a garage that will fit them and offer a warranty may be difficult!)
-
£2500 - £3000 to get 10bhp more than a 16v, do you see where Im coming from now?
-
yes mate i can lol
-
but if your good a good mechanic (and dont mind fabricating a few parts) and use a used supercharger you can do this for under £1k

but still. £1k for 10hp more than a 16v.

But the S/C mod would be gone before 16v hit revs

yes but what about a 16v, and then buying a supercharger for it?

if you want power, forget the 8v, forget the 16v, fit a 20vt and remap it..
other than that, your never gonna set the road on fire... just depends what u want from it i guess.. they are nice cars anyhow, i love mine, prefere driving it over the mk 4 which has just shy of 200bhp and the mk 3 gets ALOT more attention too

Thats because there are loads of mk4's and all look reasonable. Not often you see a NICE mk3 really is it?
And I agree about the engines, 20vt
Should be a sticky for the 'I want more out of my 8v/16v' and the answer being fit a 20vt
