Going to see a car later today....
VW GTI Edition 30 DSG
Registered August 2008/08
Full UK Spec - so balance of VW warranty remaining
Only 4000 miles
Options added:
Tinted Glass/Rear Privacy
Front Armrest
MFSW
Highline
VW Bluetooth kit
1 previous owner from new.
Purchased in August 2008 for just over £25k
Hence the car is pretty much brand new.
Its currently listed at £20k, but Im pretty sure the seller will drop to £19k if I try.
Is £19k a reasonable deal??

For the same money, I've just found a Pirelli.....

Cheers. I wouldnt mind a Pirelli but I really need a 5 door ;)
This is one of the very few ED30's Ive come across with the options Im after, and being a 5 door. Just wanted to know if the price was about right....
He has it listed at £20k, and has another viewer this afternoon after me, so not sure if he'll budge on price yet....
I'll let you know how I get on.... ;)
-
Ohhh  that old chestnut.......
-
Pressure him at £19k and see what his reaction is. If you don't ask, you don't get
If he is willing to let you walk away for the hope that "the guy in the afternoon!" will make a better offer then it is up to you whether you want the car enough to offer more
-
Offer £12,500.
-
But then he would be wasting his money.
-
But then he would be wasting his money.
It does have DSG
-
Sounds good, not a fan of the pirrelli at all
If its the right one and you have enough go for it. A cars worth what someone will pay, not what everyone else is selling at or how much parkers says. I paid what i thought was right for my car, regardless of what else there was or there prices as i knew it was the right one!
-
Offer £12,500.
Your recent efforts are very poor mate, you are at least slightly amusing sometimes.
Have a recap

Cheers guys.
Went to see the car - its spotless.
It hasnt done 4000 miles, its actually done 3500!
Back seats have never even been sat in.
Inside of the car even had that 'new smell'.
Outside of the car was completely spotless. Only issue was a very, very small scuff on one alloy, which to be honest I didnt even see until he pointed it out himself!
He asked if I wanted a test drive, and I asked if he would drive instead as I wasnt insured. So he took me a mile or two, and I liked his driving style. He wasnt flooring it etc, just drove normally. Maybe thats a good indication that he's looked after the car. the fact that he sells more prestigious cars like astons, jags, ferrari's etc maybe shows he knows how to treat them....
He said that I should change the oil every 6 months to keep it in top shape. He then said that before I took the car, even though its only done 3500 miles, because it was 8 months old he would do an oil change for me as a gesture of goodwill.
I offerred him £18,500 but he said it was too low. He paid just over £25,000 just 8 months ago!!
He wanted £19,250, but I refused and told him he could let the other buyer take a look and then come back to me if it didnt sell.
After a thought he settled at £19k.
Only downside is I was expecting the VW Bluetooth - in fact it has the parrot Bluetooth installed.
It looks professionally installed, and hardly noticable to be honest - looks like it was a part of the car. However, can this work with the multifunctional steering wheel?? He said he tried to connect it but had problems, so just left the parrot seperate in the end....
He said to let him know by the end of the day if I want it for certain at £19k. He would then invoice me and give me 10 days to pay...
If I go ahead, how should I pay?? I will have all the money as Im borrowing £5k from my sis, and have £14k saved in my account anyways. He gave me his bank details and asked if I could do a bank transfer, then come and pick the car up. However, Im a bit weary of this. What if I transfer the money and he does a runner?!!
Do you think its reasonable to ask if I can do the bank transfer at his premisis in front of him, and take the keys etc at the same time?
Never ever spent this much on a car in my life. So Im thinking it over carefully.
On the one hand I think - everyones gonna be saying "Why did you spend that much on a Golf" - since they obviously dont know what an Edition 30, or DSG etc is!
On the other hand I think sod it, you only live once, and if I can get the money for it them what the hell! My sis wants the £5k back by the beginning of July as its her holiday spending money, and after selling my current car and saving a little I reckon I could pay her back by then anyways........
So thoughts please!!!
-
Sounds a good one mate. I would personally pay via bankers draft or indeed do the transfer electronically at the point you pick the car up. If you both bank with the same bank it should be instant... If he is a dealer, couldn't you pay by debit card?
With regards to the oil change, I wouldn't let him do that as you won't know what oil gets put in. I would rather get that done myself, but that's just my opinion... With modern engine and oils these days its a bit of a myth to change it after such a low mileage but again these are just my thoughts!
What colour is the car?
-
Its a steel grey.
I did say I would pay via debit card, but he didnt seem to keen on cards for some reason.
I think Im going to ask if I can do the transfer there in front of him when i go to collect the car.............if I go for it that is........hmmm..........
-
I think for the money your spending (and it is a lot of money!), I would rather buy from a VW dealer but again that's just me and considering your after such a new car and as proved in the posts above, other cars are out there.
Just looked on the VW website, and in Mann Egerton, Swindon they have a 08 Grey Ed30 DSG with Xenons, Arm Rest etc with 4500miles for £18995 and there are loads more on there...
-
I have the parrot mate, you can adjust the volume but not use the little phone symbol. This doesnt bother me as the parrot is much quicker with the wheel anyway! Mine is next to the gear stick and dont even need to look to answer now!
Sounds like you got a minter!

Already enquired about the one on the Swindon site - its a demo car which is now on over 10,000 miles. Even though its mor ethen doubled the milleage they wont budge a penny on price!
-
Buy it, you're only here once
And get the factory bluetooth kit from Stu (do a search on this site) which will work with the MFSW:wink:
Cass
-
How much is the factory Bluetooth kit?
Do you think it would be worth removing the parrot and going for the VW Bluetooth kit??
-
Just over £200 I seem to recall. It's a genuine VAG/Skoda part but works fine. The only issue IMHO is that it doesn't use the phone button on the MFSW, it's the mute button that gets coded to operate the device.
Installation link here:

and here:

Your choice - I actually had a Parrot system but I sold it before installation and bought the OEM unit as I wanted a factory, not aftermarket look.

Friend of mine just picked up a 58 / 09 R32 with good spec from main dealer for 18.5K
-
Im having second thoughts after a chat with my wife last night.
I love the car, and the wife isnt bothered whether I buy it or not, but she asked me to carefully think over the following points.....
1. £19k is a lot of money - do you really want to put yourself in debt over a car, then have it tough over the summer while you try to pay the debt off??
2. Since I use a car every day to get to work and back (45 miles per day), do you want to spend double the amount you currently do on petrol?
She has a good point, and thought I should look into a GT DSG instead.
I do love the ED30 TBH, but should I wait and look for a 07/57 thats a bit cheaper, or should i do the 'sensible' thing and get a GT thats more economical, OR should I spend less and get a GTI rather then a ED30............
-
Mate,
I was in a BMW 120d M Sport before my GTi.
The fuel difference wasnt too noticeable.
In the BM, despite the claimed 45mpg urban I was averaging 34mpg in daily use.
With the GTi, doing exactly the same kind of driving, I average 30mpg. So in the scheme of things, the mpg difference is nothing to me.
And also - I LOVE my Gti - its twice the car the BMW was. The GTi is my 34th car (between my wife and I) and is the first one that I fully intend to keep for a long time - it really is all the car I could possibly need.
Just be careful about talking yourself out of a deal after the fact.....I do it every time...test drive a car then have sleepness nights for the next couple of days wishnt I hadnt said yes! I even did that with the GTi, although the sleepless nights stopped the day I picked it up!

hi mate
think ive already said to you a few times for 14k you,ll get a mint gti fully loaded and still have change to put ed30 wheels on it and a few mods to almosty get what you would buy for that 19k.... that you will have to work bloody hard to repay to your sis!
price up all the mods needed to make the gti almost the ed3o and see what diff in change you,ll have???
toughy decision tho.
and have said all that i struggled to get the cash for what i wanted and it was worth every second min day week month that i begged stole borrowed to get it!
so all in all i wasnt much help at all :embarassed:
good luck bud

To be honest, I was up half the night last night. Kept going over what a great car it was! Ive never spent this much on a car before and want to make sure I dont regret anything later on!
The other alternative I have is a 320D M Sport - but if you say the 120D wasnt too different MPG wise, then the 320D would probably be worse wouldnt it??
-
NOOOOOOOOOOO golf all the way mate!or everytime one goes past you,ll hate it!!
and thats a nice spec from pistonheads too!

Wait for the next GTI to come out in the UK.
That way you'll save thousands and thousands of pounds.
If you buy one now you'll just loose thousands and thousands of pounds.
-
If you doing motorway miles, then the ed30 wont disapoint you. she will easily do mid 30's on motorway trawls. The GT is a totally different car, and cannot be compared as a simular car, because it isnt in the slightest. Either Get the ed30 which is what i wished i had before buying 2 previous Normal MK5 GTi's (reason being dealers back then wanted too much more £, so i settled with another standard one). Couldnt find the funds until one appeared as a private seller 14 months old, and secured the deal at £18.5k. Sold back my 3 week old steel grey GTi to get the ed30 instead. Much better car and love it to bits. Go with your heart ifti, if you can save a couple of grand , get the ED30, but dont panic if 19k is abit of a stretch, just keep looking and wait for a 5 door dsg to come along.
IT WILL EAT YOU EVERYTIME, when your in your GT golf. dont do it, be patient , one will appear for less money.
-
Buy a normal GTI and remap it. Sweet, and faster than one of the coloured lower bumper models.
No need for anniversary versions with their plaques, save your money.

Remap the 'colored lower bumper model' and that will be quicker than the mapped GTI. Whats the point in comparing modded vs standard, your trolling is getting worse and worse mate. Maybe you should go over to the vxr forum, they have quite a few trolls so you might learn a bit. Most trolls provide a level of amusement but you are just repetitively boring now.

Modding a GTI costs £430, much less than the price difference between the anniversary model and the standard GTI.
The car is then faster than an ED30 at much less cost.
True?
-
not faster , but goes quicker then it did as standard Egbert

No it isnt faster, probly about equal BHP and then there are the other millions of variables involved. The difference between 10-15bhp is negligible, you are talking about a slight bit in front of the other car. Two cars with a second difference between them from 0-60 will have less than a car length in difference.
You clearly have some issue with the fact you didn't get an ED30, every time it comes up you wade in spouting utter tripe
-
He spouts tripe 95% of the time... but its not his fault as you must remember that he's a troll

The seller has just emailed me stating he needs a deposit of £3k to secure the car.
He then said he would pay off the rest of the finance?! I didnt realise the car was on finance!
He said he would clear the finance and send me a copy of the clearance letter.
I can then go and pay the rest and pick up the car.....
Does this sound right?? Hoe does this financing thing work?

Walk away now.
-
£3k deposit is way too high - VW dealer wanted £250 off me IIRC.
If you're having second thoughts then walk away - another will come along soon enough - I always twist myself inside out with worry when it comes to buying a new car - but I know when it feels right.
Keep looking. :)
-
I was thinking of saying that i will go to his office, with the full amount in Bankers Draft.
I would then expect the full outstanding finance to be paid while i wait, and then for the deal to take place.
Does that sound reasonable?
If he agreed, how would I know if the finance had been paid in full etc?
If he doesnt agree then I'll walk. Im not willing to transfer a large deposit across to him and having nothing to show for it!
-
Don't make a dash purchase mate. Although you are giving it a huge amount of thought.
You know about my purchase 4 weeks ago....ED30 S/Grey 3dr 23k, 1 owner, xenons, armrest, ipod, folding mirrors, puddle lights, privvee glass & just had dealer fit cruise & sensors fitted.
All in its cost me (the wife) a tad over 14k & it is in A1 condition (edit.....was...she kerbed a wheel last Friday, they WERE all unmarked).
Good Luck
-
Yeh, you got a really great deal there. Thats my perfect car, although Im after a 5 door which seem to be hard to come by!
Im going to tell him that I'll have the money by mid next week. I would then expect to hand him a bankers draft for the full amount and for him to then clear the finance in front of me before we finished the deal.
In the meantime, if he finds another buyer, then he can go right ahead ;)
There is no way Im transferring any funds with nothing to show for it!
-

The other alternative I have is a 320D M Sport - but if you say the 120D wasnt too different MPG wise, then the 320D would probably be worse wouldnt it??
Mate - it depends if the 320D is "Efficient Dynamics" or not (after Sep 2007 I believe). If it is ED then you could realistically expect 40mpg in daily use, if not, then 33mpg is more realistic. (My 120d wasnt ED).
The 320D M Sport is a fantastic car, if Im honest, it would be a better buy (as a driving experience) than a GTI.
However, BMW dealers will rip you off, and no-one will let you out of junctions in a BMW!!
My 120d M Sport was my first and last BMW. It was such an anti-climax - the cache of owning a BMW was not all its cracked up to be - and the 120D engine, whilst sweet and free revving, is not as reliable as BMW would have you believe.
I could fill this page on the pros and cons of BMW ownership.....there is no doubt, for a mass produced car, they are "the ultimate driving machine" but as a long term ownership prospect, you will need deep pockets!!!!
Andy

With my purchase I debit carded £300, faxed a copy of a BS cheque 2 days before so they could check and took the cheque and 4k in cash to complete and collect. I think your chap is trying to be a bit cute. Be careful mate
-
He's emailed me asking for me to give him a ring again.
I think I may pull out of this. I feel as though Im being pushed. I may just tell him I cant get hold of the funds for another 2 weeks or so and see how he responds - whether he's willing to wait or whether he calls it off himself.....

Don't walk, RUN
-
Robinsons in Norwich near me have a SGrey '08 5dr for £17995. I am in the city Wed if you are interested and want me to take some pic's Ifti
-
Oh and it is an ED30 mate
-
Hey pitch - that would be great if you could get some further details!
Namely age/milleage/DSG, and whether you can see any options etc installed....
In the meantime I informed the seller fo this ED30 that I would want to pay the full amount via bankers draft, and that I would expect him to clear the finance on the same day in front of me.
I also stated that in the meantime if another buyer came along who could pay quicker, then he was free to go ahead.
He said that was fine.
I think from his point of view he wants to know the car has formally sold etc. which is why he was requesting the deposit.
-
I think you are right.
There are scare mongers on here, but IMHO what the seller is doing is perfectly normal in a private sale.
The only issue is the size of the deposit - £100 should be plenty for him to hold the car for a week.
at the end of the day, all he should be looking to cover is his advertising costs, should you bail out.
Your plan to get him to pay off the finance at the same time as you give him the money is perfectly normal.
I did it once when buying a Colt CZT (dont ask ) The seller rang the finance company on the day, got a faxed settlement figure and then I went with him to the bank and paid the money off his finance.
Funnily, the car (2005) was 18mths old. It cost £15k new. I paid him £4500 and he then had to find another £4k to pay off the £8500 finance that was outstanding!! The car was a pocket rocket which gave me 6 months of fun. I then sold it for £5k to some mug who drove all the way to me in Aberdeen from Birmingham!!
Bottom line is, you clearly know what you are doing with this deal, and if the car is right for you, you can make it work. If you have any doubts, walk away. As I said earlier, apart from the big deposit, I dont think the seller is being unreasonable.

Thanks Pitch.
Its probably worth me paying the extra £1k then - for the DSG, Bluetooth, half the miles, and an extra 3 months on the warranty (as its was registered August 08).
If I ask anyone for advice, the first thing they come out with is "Bloody Hell. £19k? You could get yourself a nice BMW or Merc for that!"
Thats where I sigh and stop talking to em! lol
I have another day or two to mull it over. Have the full amount ready in my bank account. Its just whether I should go and get a practically new one thats in new condition and with almost all its warranty intact, or keep looking for somet a bit cheaper. If I let it go i dont want to regret it later on!
-
no worries mate.
if this one doesn't happen another will be along you should be sure of.
i walked away from three before mine came along.
-
If I go for it, how do I ensure Finance has been cleared???
Whats the usual procedure??
Is it....
I go to him with payment.
Before doing the deal he rings up his finance company and pays off what he owes completely, all in front of me.
We then do the deal.
How can I ensure its all been paid off though?? Do they fax something through to him at the time of payment that I can keep as proof??

Still deciding but wanna make sure I have all bases covered!
I will do a HPI check as soon as Im 100% that I want the car.
In the meantime I just want to know how to ensure the finance is all fully paid. The guy has his own dealership and seems pretty genuine. This was his sons private car, but he doesnt want to clear the finance until he knows 100% that the car has sold - which is understandable I guess.
Apart from him paying off the finance in front of me, should I be expecting any paperwork to state the finance is no longer outstanding??

..........i would think so mate.Just finished off some interest free payment's for some furniture & ''black horse'' sent me a letter saying thank you,''You'' now have finished you'r payments & please cancel you'r direct debit etc.
-
As you may have guessed, I am seriously considering this car, so I emailed the guy saying my only concern was the finance at the moment. This is what he came back with.......
"Hi Ifti,
There are a couple of options that we can do.One of them is you send me a
deposit for the car and once i have that i will clear the finance immediatly so
when you come to pick up the car, i will have a clear title letter saying that
they have no further interest in the vehicle. The other option is,you bring with
you when you want to collect the car, two drafts one to the finance company and
the other to me for the balance. We can take the finance draft to their bank and
pay it in, then you know it has been settled. There is one other option, you come
to me with the draft made out for the full amount and i will transfer the
outstanding finance in front of you then they will send me a clear title letter
immediatly. So please let me know what option you wish to take.As i said to you i
am not going to settle the finance unless it is sold,so i need a commitment from
you! I am not out to catch you or sell you a car on finance i do not do business
like that ...Many thanks"
So it does actually seem pretty cool doesnt it??
If I take in two bankers drafts, I get charged £10 per draft! So......should I just take in one draft for the full amount an dget him to clear it in front of me, then pay him the full amount once we get the fax through to say its clear - or should I just pay the extra tenner for safety sake and just take in two seperate drafts?
-
Get the seller to pay the charges for you mate..
-
Over the last seven moths the car has lost £6,000, about £28 per day.
In the three days the seller has faffed over his HP the car has lost another £85.
More than enough to pay for bank charges.
-
Its not the seller that faffed about though, he's keen to go ahead. He's just waiting for a commitment from me......
-
As before mate tell him you will do the deal as long as he pays the charges.Screw him for every penny. .
-
Yeh, as far as Im concerned Im paying him for the car and thats it. He picks up any charges buy his finance company etc!
-
Thats it mate why should you have to pay for him to settle his old finance ?.
-
 It all smells a bit to much for my liking ifti.....
I told my chap I would have it, 300 quid deposit & collected in 7 days later.
Force his hand & say you want the evidence that the finance is cleared before you complete the sale.
If he wants more commitment, give him 500 on a visa as a holding deposit, which he can credit back when you turn up with the cash/draft.
Its a buyers market & I am sure he would not want you to walk away.
Good luck again matey

Im now considering letting this one pass and keeping a look out for some more.
I need a new car before June latest, so I have plenty of time I guess. I think the deal is OK, but £19k is really clearing me out, and I like to have a few extra grand in the bank just in case I ever need it....My budget was around £16-17k to start with, and I feel Im stretching a little too far....

Buy a GTI and remap.
It's the sensible route and you'll have pots of money left over.

But the looks of the Ed30 are nicer as standard without having to colour code and more expense. Your find more bargins between now and the summer ifti, so hang in there. Does sound abit odd the deal your backing away from.
-
If the finance wasnt involved I would have been much more interested.
The only bit I feel down about is the fact that Im walking away from an almost brand new car! :(
I could always leave it a little while longer, and if he hasnt sold in another few weeks offer him less ;)
-
that makes a lot of sense ifti. And deffo hold out for an ED30

Blackberry input............ But I think you will get the jist. ED30 all the way....

How does a 2008 Ed30 sound for £17k?
Reg'd March 2008 (1yr old) 17k miles, Full Miltek, Coilovers, RNS510+6CD Changer, OEM Bluetooth, Cruise Control, Highline Computer, Centre Arm Rest,Silver, 5dr.
Only thing that could be an issue for you? It's a manual?
Only contemplating selling but if it was of interest? We could talk?
-
Sounds tempting - could you PM me some pics?
Im assuming it has full service history etc?
Are the Miltek and Coilovers the only mods it has?? Im assuming you need to inform the insurance company of them?
Also, does it have a MFSW?
-
Owner since new  reg 07/03/08 ed30 number 1610
Full VW history, serviced 13.5k. Also have original exhaust and suspension so you could always return to standard if you wanted to.

Saw 2 '58' plate ED30's at my local dealership today - both at over £21k!
Anyways, I think Im going to go fro a standard GTI now. It'll leave me with some extra to spend during the summer I guess, rather then completely clear me out - and it'll mean I dont owe anyone any money either!.
I have around £18k at the mo, but will look at spending around the £14k mark - so a GTI with a good few options ;)
