Title: pls help---------temp sensor poor mpg ......
Post by: nadlad on 15 January 2009, 21:13
ave searched on the forum and read the temp sender problem but just wanted to check iwhich one i needed to do

basically my temp needle keeps goign between 0 and 90 as soon as i stop driving it goes to 90  or it just fluctuates instead of stayign at 90  sometimes when its warm it stays at 0... how dangerous is this or is it ok to drive for a few days till i sort it out

do i need to apply this  guide to it

thermostat

or the temp sender one

thermostat and temp sender are two different things

buy a bottle of G12 from the dealers - make sure the engine is COLD before changing it! you'll loose a little but not a lot of coolant

ta m8 dam stealers better have it in stock tomorrow.

u know the g 12 thing do u pour that into that think that looks liek a feed and expansion tank on the left of the engine in a see through round thing. sorry dont knwo the technical term for it

they will do or they shouldn't be dealers!

its called the expansion tank - you will need to dilute the G12 slightly - ratio's are on the back of the bottle

alright cheers.  its called a expantion tank .....am a civil engineer by trade been designing a lof of HVAC systems at work f**k knows why i called it a feed and expansion tank!

well it does regulate the coolant around the system so i guess technically you are correct

i'd suggest buying a Haynes manual - not great but will give you a better idea of what things are and where they are

will the haynes manual tell me how to change the boot/lock and handle over?

Weren't on the back of bottle. If your changing the temp sender you'll only lose about 100ml if that. Really easy t do.

Yeah, get two of hose C clips as one may break! and at 40p it's stupid not too. I changed mine and the first clip i removed pinged off somewhere, went to put new on an dropped it. Looked under the car and found half a clip. Managed to find the other complete one hiding in the front valence!

can a faulty temp sender result in low mpg i just doen a round trip of 50 miles at 70mph returnign only 43mpg... or is this due to the bigger 18s?
Title: Re: temp sensor
Post by: T_J_G on 17 January 2009, 11:08
Yeah it can
Title: Re: temp sensor
Post by: Steve_PD on 17 January 2009, 12:57
Yes it will cause bad mpg but the 18's will knock a little bit off to
Title: new temp sender added but still poor mpg????
Post by: nadlad on 17 January 2009, 21:28
Yes it will cause bad mpg but the 18's will knock a little bit off to

just done a 100 mile round trip at a constant 75mph and am only getting 42mpg now this is after changign the tempo sender, i didnt know that the 18's on 225's woudl knock as much as 8-9mpg's off thats quite a lot.... i was thinkgin maybe change MAF but i was hoping the new sender woudl sort it out and it has done but only slightly i think my last sender was temperental ... but never thought the wheels wud make such a big difference!!!!

any ideas?

Post by: Steve_PD on 17 January 2009, 21:53
drive slower
at about 65-70mph I get around 50mpg ish
Changing the maf might make a difference.

Post by: nadlad on 17 January 2009, 21:54
accordign to parkers the

anni 150 tdi still returns 52mpg same as the golf 150

and the anni runs 18 wheels so how coem my mpg was piss poor  when i was just drivign sensibly

oh right suppsoe all test are doen at 56mph but still i used to do 80 and get 52mpg... and now if i do 80 i only 44mpg!!!

what figs do u get on ure 18s at 80

i suppose u always gotto compensate soemwhere and if it mean sloosign 8-9 mpg for the looks ill take it cant beat the grip though even in wet sticks to the road proper nice!
Title: Re: pls help---------temp sensor poor mpg ......
Post by: Steve_PD on 18 January 2009, 12:30
If I drive home at 80 I get about 45ish mpg
your right about the grip
Title: Re: pls help---------temp sensor poor mpg ......
Post by: nadlad on 18 January 2009, 12:44
right so @ 80mph = approx 45mpg ... that means theres nothign wrong i.e maf etc and its just normal to loose around 7-8 mpgs then......gutted but u cant beat teh grip and looks ...

i was thinkign of changign maf but if that teh norm then screw it

cheers pd.

what was the ambient temperature like?? (outside temp)

in cold weather diesels take a knock on mpg - my last tank over the really cold spell i just scrapped 500 miles from the tank  :undecided:
Title: Re: pls help---------temp sensor poor mpg ......
Post by: Steve_PD on 18 January 2009, 13:44
I noticed an improvement in mpg this week with the slightly warmer weather. I've done just over 1000 miles in the past week and used £110 worth of v-power diesel so not to bad

hmm sounds about right then - was your journey quite hilly? mostly dual carrigeway??
Title: Re: pls help---------temp sensor poor mpg ......
Post by: nadlad on 18 January 2009, 15:24
no it was just flat m1 the usually trip on my 16s at 80mph woudl of got between 51-52 mpg but with these on i got 43mpg... i was thinkign of changign the MAF until steve pd says he get s the same around 43-45 so i guess thats the price u pay...one last thign i coudl check is in the service info thread  under mk4 maintence thread rich says

'.....If running 18" wheels using the 225/40/18 you should run 34 psi all round to compensate for the lower profile tyre'

and i think the tyres place inflated them to 32psi all round but i mite be wrong!!!!

this also means parkers guide isnt right  coz the anni runs on 18s and it shows mpg as the 150 tdi?

Is it due a service soon??  :undecided:
How about taking the maf off and see if its dirty. Mine was dirty/oilly, i cleaned it with  Isopropyl Alcohol
it probably did help.
I took it off again a couple of weeks ago to see if it was dirty again and it looked ok.

mite pop into vdub and get a new one cant be arsed fannyign about cleaning it but i think its the norm to loose mpgs if u keep it in the 80s and its not due service for another 5k
