Water flange
« on: 14 December 2008, 19:58 »
Hi guys,

I need a new water flange for my Golk Mk2 8v as I managed to shear part of the existing one when replacing the white temperature sensor (brittle bloody things). Only got the car last Tuesday, what a start to dub ownership!

Now the car is an 1988 Mk2, but the previous owner stuck in an earlier Mk1/Mk GTI DX 1800 8v engine (K-jet is assume?). I understand the water flange for this engine is different as it is metal, whereas the later ones were plastic. I've looked on GSF and Eurocarparts but can't find this part. Anyone know the part number and/or where I could get one?

Here's a pic of the offending item...http://img136.imageshack.us/my.php?image=image043ec0.jpg

Cheers

Chris

I'm a little confused - nothing new there  Your running Digifant I assume? So you've bust the plastic flange? I only ask as the K-jet motors do have an alloy flange but the sensors are different so I didn't think they were interchangable.

If it is the plastic type go to VW for it, there's only a couple of quid in the price and the cheaper ones don't last (and get new sensor seals at the same time - they're pennies). They fit a few models so my local dealer had one on the shelf.

If it is the alloy type then it may well be discontinued from VW but I'm pretty sure GSF etc don't do them.

alloy one is VAG only I'm afraid, and not cheap.  You can convert to the later plastic one, but you'll need 2 new sensors and will have to chop & splice new plugs on too!
The early digifant GTIs had the alloy water flange fitted as std.  Now I might even have one in my random spares box, I'll have a look!

Cheers for the responses so far. I managed to repair the flange with glue and metal epoxy putty (wonderful stuff) which allowed me to move the car round to a non-parking permit zone (ruddy Edinburgh). However I'm not confident that it'll be reliable in the long run so still want to replace it. Phone up VW today to order one but they want the engine number as stamped on the block, in the format of two letters and six numbers. I could find no such number on the engine. Any idea where this no. is located?

And how much we talking from VW?

Thanks again

Some parts guys are bloody useless, the part number you require is:
027 121 133A - 32.31+VAT
I'll have a look in a bit, I'm sure I have one!

The code will start PB, it should be written on the boot sticker, or on the inside cover of your service book if 1) you have one and 2) the dealer wasn't a lazy bastard.  Mine only has my vin written in, nothing else

Its also on the front of the block, but since its not the original engine it could be anything!

Thanks alot Jonny, much appreciated.

The engine's a bit of a mongrel, bits of a Mk2 bolted on to a Mk2 1800 pretty much. Probably explains why there is a multitude of connectors without any wires going to them and all sorts. Will take a while to sort it all out!

I've been doing a head gasket on my 8v k-jet head and come to change the side water flange for a new (black plastic) one as it was leaking, only to of just snapped two of the bolts that hold on both water flanges!
Not happy to say the least as this car seemed to be plagued with stubborn or sheared bolts!
Looks like I'm going to have to go back to the machine shop to get the buggers extracted as I don't own any stuff to get them out, sadly I've got both manifolds fitted up as i was just about to bolt up the head!
are these normal bolts that I can easily replace or are they some special types?
