1.8 8valve didgifant supercharger !!1
« on: 10 December 2008, 13:50 »
Ok so I got the lates copy of Golf+ dropped though the dor by the postie the other day and whilst reading the new products section came accross an article about a Rotrex charger suitable for the mk2 1.8 8v digifant , apparently (and I have checked wit Rotrex) you can get bhp figures of apprx 180ish bhp on stock internals and digfant managment.

Now I'm planning to pull my 5 door MK2 off the road at the end of next summer for a complete strip down , bare metal respray and rebuild and had been planning on a VR6 transplant or abf but I'm now thinking rebuild my 8valve engine and supercharge it, plus points are I don't have to change engine numbers with the DVLA or anything like that and I bet it sounds very very nice. of course bigger brakes will be a must. Thi kit costs about £1600 which I didn't think was too bad all things considered ..

Thoughts :smug: and Ideas please

Why not drop a 20v turbo in, 180 or 225 as standard and could cost you less than supercharging yours.

Sound good, but you could buy a vr6 for around 400 and turbo it for under 600! Then you would have around 250bhp to play with.

Keeping the original 1.8 and supercharging it In my opinion would keep the car closer to it's roots and still an original mk2 not some hybrid car , I also think that 180 would be more than enough to make it a very very fast car by any standard without adding the extra 50kilos over the front that a VR6 would bring (changing the beautiful handling)

180bhp on stock rods/pistons? BANG. If it was safe and reliable to run that much boost do you really think VW would have gone to such lengths to strengthen the G60 engine? Do it properly, do it once, or don't do it at all in my book.

sounds interesting but no way can the digi handle 180bhp on standards. Rotrex talk bollox with figures.

Where's the link to this £1600 kit then?

I'm not seeing how the standard Digifant would manage it.  Forced induction has rather different requirements for injection systems than naturally aspirated.

Technically if you lowered the compression ratio with a thicker head gasket, the engine might well be OK running boost, but that would mean head off and a lot more action than just 'bolting on' a supercharger.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.
