Exhaust Management Light ON
« on: 08 December 2008, 16:55 »
As above... EMS Light is on (the one that looks like an engine). Took the car into the dealers today and the problem seems to be a faulty EVAP CANISTER SOLENOID.
Something to do with the filtering of fumes from the exhaust. Been quoted £80 to replace and fit.

Can anyone shed anymore light on this problem for me...
Am I safe to drive my car, as I'm going to Sheffield tomorrow.

Cheers

Mines done this recently too....came on a week and a half ago, system was reset and it came on again this evening (in yellow).

My car is now at the dealers - hope to find out the issue tomorrow.

Mine did this too a few weeks ago after picking it up from an airport car park.  Took it in to stealers, they said it was a problem with the low fuel pressure sensor.  Re-booked the car in as they had to order the part in.  The light actually went out on its own but they still replaced it for free...despite it being outside the 2 year warranty (mine's an import).  They also carried out 24k6 recall which they said was related to the exhaust warning light coming on?  I didn't hang around too long to ask too many questions in case they realised that they should have charged me for the work after all!!  Sorry cant be of more help

Little yellow engine icon...

They seem to think that the CO2 will be leaking into the car because the filter isn't working correctly....

a VW tech told you that? what a wally.. its the fumes from the petrol tank not the exhaust (it's a sealed system and the fumes are collected to be burned in the engine)

did they actually test the solenoid or just scan the fault codes? the ecu can throw up a fault in the evap system for a number of things, including the fuel cap not tightened/sealing properly. Did they clear the fault code for you and has the dash light come back on since?

I had this issue and my technician told me that there are soft and hard faults for a yellow warning light. In my case as the car was not exhibiting any cut outs or problems, they said to just drive it without racing it to the dealers. If it had been red apparently that would have been worse. In my case they simply reset the fault, took it out for a test and gave it back. Haven't had the problem since (about 400 km ago)

Is the car standard or running "uprated" cats? Some issues are being seen where the second Lamdba threshold needs to be raised due to some aftermarket uprated cats, it's easy to do in the hex, well... ;)

I'm presuming they had tested the solenoid on the EVAP Canister as that's what they are saying is faulty, as for clearing the fault code NO it's still on...

Would you say I'd be alright driving it about until Friday...

Thats a pretty cheap repair from VW, £80 is the minimum charge for labour (or thereabouts) up here.  That would make me a bit suspicious that as Rhyso said he's just going to tighten up the fuel cap for you!  Then again he'd have done that there and then and charged you the £80....I'm just cynical.  If VW can do it for £80, you can do it for a tenner.  That I am sure off.
