Leaky 16v mystery continues
« on: 08 June 2004, 21:23 »
So..followed the advice of the very helpfull people on these here forums!
New gaskets and seals on-
1.Distributor (cured)
2. Head Gasket
3. Cam Box Gasket
4. Exhaust cam end seal
5. New timing belt (easier than I thought)
6. De - carboned the piston heads and valves

I put it all back together, got the timing sorted out. The little GTi 16v is running nice, even got the tick over to behave. Pulls nice and clean, plent of go! Stops well to with the addition of some Black Diamond combi discs.
HOWEVER!

The thing is still dropping oil. There is a leak which seems to be coming from the driver (Cam belt) end of the engine. It may be behind the cam belt cover, but I can not identify it! HELP PLEASE!
Suggestions as to the culprit and remedies would be good.
Sump gasket? seems too low.
What about the itermediate sprocket? How hard / easy is it to change the other seals, where should I look. Sorry to harp on about it, but wifey is getting pissed off with oil on drive, and me spending every spare hour of daylight under the car! ???
Its a GTi

The intermediate shaft seal is easy to change, take the cam belt off, remove the sprocket, take out the 2 bolts for the seal housing, remove the housing. Replace the seal (iirc same as the cam shaft one) and the "o" ring on the housing and rebuild.
