Help in the purchase of a MK5

Hi Guy's,
Im new to the board and have some questions.  I currently have a Mk3 GTi and i really need a new car.  Ive seen an 05 Mk5 GTi for sale that is the top end of my price scale (£8400).  Now this is cheap for a MK5 but it has 79000 miles.  This is quite high but my old Golf was fantastic and hardy had any problems. 

Now i know the mileage is high but is this a problem?

I earn a reasonable income but the money i use to pay for this has been saved for a good few years.  I dont have a shed load of money for servicing and maintanence that is above normal.  Have you experienced costing for you MK5 that seems above average.

It states that the Mk5 GTi does 35 miles to the gallon.  Whats your average mpg?  How many miles do you get to a take?

Thanks for your help guys.  I love my old Golf and would love this even more. Just weary as i dont want a high mileage model to be a money pit. 

Oh lastly - do you think £8400 for an 05 GTi with 79000 miles is a reasonable price?

Russ, I do mainly into town drives 7 miles or so from the outskirts of Glasgow to the city centre and back, mpg on my 05 (55) gti is challenging, I get anywhere from 270 to 352 miles to 55 litre tank, you do the math. On continuous long motorway sppeds with cruise I have achieved circa 43mpg, however no car I have owned before can do the dull stuff and let me blow the cobwebs away like this car.

Cost wise, it's depressingly a good price this time last year for the same car with 20k I would have been willing to pay 14k. I want to cry..... LOL nah still had great fun, regardless :-)

Price seems fine in the current climate and with the mileage assuming its got all the history

As long as it has a rock solid history that can be checked, probably be fine,  but any grey areas on it then I would walk cos no point in leaping in just for the sake of owning a mkv gti, perhaps hang on a bit save a bit more cash and then pick up one that has less miles on it. In all honesty thats what I would do cos you say that its some hard saved pennies, if ye can stretch another 1.6k then there is a bucket of cars with a 3rd of that mileage on them.

If it was me I'd keep hold of the money and try and get a lower mileage one... I'm sure you could find one for about £9k with 20k miles or so on the clock with 3 months as the Mk6 is coming out in January.

I'm off to find a high building to jump off of, only plus side new cars are also dirt cheap, the Market has readjusted so it's still the same to change for me as it's always been. I bought this car to keep for a long time, but I have recently been wooed by the new and nearly new r prices, I may just be falling back into that ok' have renew after it's 3 year old trap thereby propping up the steamers...... Maybe I won't change after all and stock to plan A, after all I have an A1 car with every conceivable extra.......

Sorry.. didn't mean to rub it in  :embarassed:  But we're all losing here in some ways... My current Ed30 cost £28,500 and I have spent £5.5k on mods and stonechip protection.. its probably worth £17-18k now if that.. and thats after a year.  My first Ed30 in March 07 was bought for £28k and sold for £22 or 23 - can't remember - 6 weeks later as I had to raise funds for my first house.  Its my turn to shaft VW now witht this R32 purchase...    Or maybe I'm the one still getting shafted

As for the mpg question...
Only had my 06 plate Gti for 2 weeks and still adjusting from a mk4 GT Tdi.
My only real mileage so far has been 160 mile motorway journeys which gave me 40-42mpg.  Shorter 30 mile motorway journeys gave me up to 38mpg.
Can't see myself getting much more than the above as it was a steady 70mph drive. (unless I slow to 56 and slipstream a truck) which defeats the reason for buying it in the first place
