Spray Painting?
« on: 04 December 2008, 12:54 »
Anyone know the correct way to really spray my mk3 Golf Gti? Not the whole car but the boot has a few rust patches and i thought it would be a good chance to see if I could spray it or not.

Anyone know the paint code?
Also, any cheap but half decent spray guns?
I found this reckon this could do the job?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Marksman-110W-Electric-Spray-Paint-Gun-metal-cars-wood_W0QQitemZ370070109835QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint?hash=item370070109835&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1301

I also could do with correct procedure for doing it?
I know I need wet n' dry, and primer, paint, laquer....?
How do I match the paint to what's already there also?
Should I just forget it and get the whole car resprayed?
Also, any idea on the best products and where to buy?
I did look for a guide in the search but couldn't find anything? I do have an extra non rusted boot, but it's that purple colour and also not glazed. So if I screw up big time i could just go get that done properly and fit the spare.

i would rather use a spray can from halfords than use that gun.....
if its just the boot you are doing then go to a company that specialises in automaotive finishing products and get a tin from them, thats your cheapest option...
or you could buy all the proper equiptment..
google automotive refinishing and you`ll get more luck.. and remember, most of your time will be spent prepping the car, not spraying. if the prep is poor then the finish will be very poor.

Too many questions! see my thread about procedures.. http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=93525.0
Dont buy that gun! its scrap!
do all you paint work with rattle cans, in the warm!!
And your paint code will be on a paper sticker in the boot, somewhere near the spare wheel, a 4 digit code along the lines of (example) LZ5V when you order your paint, ask for it in a basecoat system, regardless of the colour.

Thanks Thom, but think I'll have to let the spray shop handle it, I don't have that kind of space or skill.
I was going to erect a gazebo around it to spray it, No garage space here =(

Nevermind. Thanks for the help anyway =)

if its just the boot youre spraying then have a go, but have a good practice on something else first.
make sure you mask very well and also give the car a  good prep. as long as you choose a warm day (preferably in the summer when)
also if you are using tins then warm the cans up... else you will be getting white marks everywhere..

Ok I've now stripped out my shed and made it into my workshop, so with my spare bootlid being blue and my car being black..... Sigh..... I went and bought 2 tins of paint to match my car colour, 1 huge tin of gray primer, 1 huge tin of laquer and about 10 different grades of sandpaper including about 7 kinds of wet n dry.

I'm gonna add what I think I should be doing and if anyone would like to pick flaws in my method, I'd appricate a heads up please =).

I've already stripped the boot of all wiring, hinges, glass etc so there are no moving parts or anything to get in my way.

Now I'm ready to prep so I'm going too.....

1. Sand down the whole boot lid inside and out with a power sander, and manual sand the places the power sander won't reach. (To bare metal)

2. Give it a proper clean. then dry and then use a cloth i picked up at halfords that "should" remove any small bits of dust I missed.

3. Couple of minor dents that I am going to fill, then sand by hand to meet the bare metal. Repeat step 2.

4. Primer 3 layers repeating step 2 between each coat. And sanding out any imperfections.

5. I'm thinking 3 coats of paint (more if needed). Repeating step 2 between each coat.

6. Add 2 coats of laquer? Not sure on this help appriciated?

7. Add all wiring, boot lock, badges etc.... Then glaze. Then fit.

If I should get any drips (although I intend to do nice light coats hopefully avoiding this) would it be best to wipe away as I notice or wait till dry and sand down and respray that particular section?

Also, wet n dry? How wet? Dunk it in a bucket of water? Or get a damp cloth and press onto the sandpaper?

Thanks in advance for any help offered... Also, time is not a factor I intend to give this a good 2 weeks.

Also, I have a halogen heater would it be worth setting this up when I spray to add warmth?

shouldnt need so sand to bare metal, only the bits you are going to use filler on..
with drips, wait till dry.. then give a light sand, but if you go light you shouldnt get any, remember, dont flood it..
keep things warm, that will help adhesion.

Is it a metallic??  If so the absolute minimum grade of wet and dry to use on any part you will shoot basecoat on is 800... but also depends on the brand of abrasive. So would use 1200 just to be safe!  if its a flat colour you can use 400 all day long. Ben

If the paint on the tailgate is the factory origional, there is no need to strip back to bare metal, repair and prime only the necessary areas
if its been painted since factory paint, then as above, but prime the whole thing
Inside panel need only be keyed with a red scotchbrite, all other rubbing should be done with 800 grit or finer..
How are you intending to apply the primer/paint?
