Thanx man, but what should I search?? I searched "golf recurring issues" but it just came up with problems people had with their Golf, but doesn't say whether they happen across the mk2 range :(

Check the condition of the shell carefully. Then check the engine for smoke, noise, mayo in oil / coolant, and check the gearbox.

Most other things can be fixed relatively easily.

... it's turned into a fashion show for poofters.

Hi mate. Common problems with mk2 golfs. Heater matrix, Rust in the boot and tailgate, Sticky rear calipers. Obviously with a car this age check for rust everywhere and accident damage.

I wouldn't have known what to search for when I was new to the forum either as it relies on the exact phrase being used.

I mainly used the matey-matey buying guide when I was buying mine. Some other things that can be expensive to remedy:

1) FULLY check the alarm/immobiliser making sure it works flawlessly.
2) Check for stem seal wear.
3) Make sure there no play in the steering.
4) Check reverse gear and also full lock.
5) Check the sill's for rust.
6) Always check it starts from stone cold.
