Idle problem when warm, slight loss of power
« on: 03 December 2008, 21:25 »
hello

8v GTI digi... recently had timing and CO done (around 2 weeks ago) and new cambelt kit fitted. also new rotor arm, dizi cap, plugs, oil and filter change. problem was there before this work was carried out. (i assumed the work would cure it).

2 problems in one i fear; dodgy idle and small loss of power.

its starts, idles and drives fine when cold, but when warm it feels a touch sluggish and the idle speed has been creeping up over the last week (to around 1500rpm). pulled off ISV plug when the engine was hot and noticed it returned to normal idle speed. at the mo i have adjusted the idle back down to around 900rpm with the idle screw, but will clean the ISV over the weekend. it still idles fine when cold even after the adjustment.

question is, would a buggered ISV cause loss of power? feels like the old girl has lost (a small amount of) poke

p.s. blue temp sender is 12 months old, genuine VAG

I don't think a semi will give the same results

Probably would. Have you tried cleaning out the throttle body? Also i recently found the connecting air pipe between the isv and air box was particularly gunked up on mine so squirted with carb cleaner that i bought for throttle body and that seemed to sort it out. My idle was all over thew place until i cleaned those two bits up. Has made it much more responsive, would recommend trying that at the same time.

you need to set the idle with the blue sender unplugged and reved to 3k 3 times, otherwise ecu will try to compensate for any changes.  by the sounds of it the oring on your idle screw is bust, allowing it to unwind itsen!  new idle screw from vag isnt very expensive, if  stiull available!  i got one about 3 year ago.

I doubt many mechanics will know how to properly tune our golfs anymore. Your best doing it yourself.
