hmm since there was no warning lights, that means you lost ignition power rather than the engine cut due to fuel starvation.  If it had cut out due to no fuel or something mechanical, the warning lights would have come on.  I know cos thats what mine did when I had a faulty overrun valve causing idle to drop too low and cutting engine when clutch dipped

Could be you have 2 seperate problems though, ign switch would be what I'd be looking at, see if you can get a mate to crank it over on the key, while you check for 12v at the black wire side of the coil :)

Cheers John.  I'll replace the fuel filter as a matter of course anyway.  Then if that doesn't work I'll do what you suggested.

Here's the old girl. Phone camera pic hence 'the darkness'

yeah deffo worth doing fuel filter.  what you could do for a quick bodge test, run a wire from the live terminal on battery all the way to the spare spade terminal on the coil (disconnect battery -ve 1st)  then try starting the car.  if it fires up you know you have an ign live feed fault to the coil!

Hi mate got my golf fixed today  it was the distributor mechanic said he wasn't getting a spark but was getting a live feed coming into the distributor but nothing coming out. The distributor was £79.50 +vat from GSF. Once we fitted it we got a strong spark. Took a while to start it as spark plugs and the bores were flooded with petrol from when i tried starting it a few times when it broke down. Now its back to normal so i suggest you check you have a spark mate.

will do, thanks.  Maybe the oil leak into the distributor is my problem?

Can I just replace the o-ring at the base into the head and clean up the distributor, or do I need to get a new one?

theres 2 seals on the 16v dizzy, you got the nice easy big green un round the outside which is piece o wee to change, then you got the one inside the dizzy which involves strippin the whole thing down, which is a right pain in the arse.  Oil leak on its own prob wont casue the problem, unless the inside of the dizzy is completly sopping with oil!  Mine leaked pretty badly but it never caused these symptoms.

pop off the cap and give it a damn good clean, check the rotor arm and cap[ contacts for carbon build up, give em a bit of a clean up if its bad with some sandpaper.
