BLOODY OIL TEMP!!!!!!!

OK so after a dodgy readout for the oil temp (was reading very hot when water wasn't) I have changed all the sensors for the water and oil and checked all my earths.  I even went so far as to get a load of new connectors for the wiring loom and re-loomed a load of stuff and replaced a load of fuses.

Now instead of the oil temp reading hot (110-120), it now reads cold (never gets above 68)!  Has anyone got any ideas...?!  Surely this has to be wrong   :huh:!?

Where did u get ur sensors from? I got an oil temp one from gsf and it wouldnt read any higher than 68 degrees fortunately my old vw one was ok so put it back on. I think the sensor is rated from 50-55 degrees to somethin like 190. If its not as vw sensor try and get one and see what happens they are not very expensive.
I would say a normal operating temp would be high 80's.

Yeh I've heard only bad things about GSF sensors but thought that the oil one would be fine form there as it's so simple.  Obviously not :angry:!  Looks like another journey to VAG then.

ha ha yep thats what i thought u learn somethin new everyday  :smiley:
i get most my stuff from gsf but now know vw sensors are a must  :nerd:

have a look at the sensor, what colour is the collar? MFA sensor has a white colar, coolant temp has a black collar.  Different ratings :)

It annoys me that GSF can't even supply something that works correctly.  Fair enough it's not a VAG part and it's made at reduced cost, but surely the basic fact that it works is a pretty important design concept.

Mine always read 112 even when pootling along. I suspected this was wrong because the rad fan hardly ever came on. I went to GSF and bought a new oil temp sensor part no. 93490 (which was different to the sensor I took out). At first I thought it was OK until it never went over 70oC on my 25 mile commute. I mentioned this to GSF but they were adamant it was an 'equivalent part'.

In the end I bit the bullet and forked out £20+ for a VAG oil sensor which was different yet again to the other two sensors! Now it reads 98 on the motorway and 90 when pootling. Third time lucky  :grin:
