help mk2 gti electrical problem

please can anybody help.i fitted a new coil to try and eliminate a missfire.i fitted the coil and it ran but still missfired. there was a spare earth connection on the coil  and a loose wire nearby so i pushed the wire onto the earth which cut the engine out and wont restart.ive checked all the fuses and there ok .ther is no spark from the coil now and ive tryed the old one back on but no joy .the fuel pump doesnt sound like its priming up either there is no sound from it when you turn on the ignition.please help as i havent a clue what ive done.the car is a mk2 gti 8v 1989 pb engine code

what colour was that wire?

the wire has a black outer sheath and underneath that is a brown sheath.think this wire should go to the engine block

yeah you would be right if is a brown, this will be an earth.  you've now blown something somewhere!
coil live isnt fused so you prob have a melted wire somewhere, follow the wire as far as you can. if it looks ok in the engine bay take the dash undertray & lower ign lock housing off on the driver side and drop down the fusebox, look for black wires to the bulkhead and from the ign switch

do you think it could have blown the ecu?

it is possible I suppose, depending which earth wire it was!  Before you go any further though you want to make sure you have no melted wires as messing about with the ignition on could result in an electrical fire

got a new ecu to try on it later on.i think it could be the ecu as there is no power to the fuel pump either now.i will keep you posted as to how it goes.but anymore advise would be great thanks.
