Plastic guide thing on lower part of gear stick
« on: 06 June 2004, 21:17 »
I have not a clue what it's called. so I could not search for it :) But it's when you go to put the car into first and it slips into reverse (very scary at roundabouts) :)

What is the best thing to do? is it that the plastic guide attached to the gear stick and the one on the side have worn?  or is it that the spring has lossend at the bottom so it does not push the gear stick up to it propper position?

What is the best to do, got to get this sorted, driving me mad! This must have happened to alot of people!

Thanks

Cheers Veedubgti8v, does 23 include - 24,12, 26 & 11?  Have you arough idea of how much this is? and is it that it's lost it stiffness so to speak :)

And is this easy to fit? I mean a DIY job?

Thanks

they arent mega bucks but i think they are around 20 ish quid from vag.

you can do it diy its fiddley but not difficult took me and veedub16v about 2ish hours to do

let me see if i can find a link

its the ball shaped thing and the cup (26) thats gone they are only plastic and grooves/holes wear in them which drops the gear stick about 5 mm

Thankyou so much! I was going to drill out the rivets on the plastic side piece and re drill holes (5 mm up) and re-rivet it back on!

This looks like the rght way!

Thanks again

yeah you turned up just in time as i was puting the car back together ;D

there not critical bits so i suggest german and swedish and the kit is ?4-5.

its not a hard job, just fiddly as hell. its like a puzzle trying to get the old bits out and new bits in. and you have to take off the aluminium heat shield from round the exhaust

Just checkingThe guy at German & swedish told me the kit comprised of the ball and housing, that's it.

Is that all I need?

Thanks

there is 2 kits, the ball and housing, and loads of bushings for the gear linkages above gearbox. i got both but have only fitted the ball selector so far. im gonna get the weighted shift rod before i do the linkages

from what i can tell all the ball and housing does is solve the problem of first/reverse
