MOT Today - Light Issues
« on: 28 November 2008, 08:13 »
Got MOT today, with tax running out tomorrow so really need some help.

My side lights won't turn on when ignition isn't on, along with the license plate lights not working at all.

I thought the side lights did work, however this is the semi dipped beam lights (new one on me!!) and not the side lights. Have played around with connectors by lights as a number of them fit but nothing. Have got a new switch and another different configuration switch that may help and going to try this afternoon before MOT.

WRT rear license plates lights have taken two off a spare tailgate and will fit to see if its just the bulbs gone, however if it isn't this, where next??

Will also check all fuses before getting to carried away, and have checked side light bulbs

Basically if all stuff i try above doesn't work, where next?????

Have fixed side lights now, new switch was what it needed, must have had switch off different spec as old switch didn't have three contacts on top of switch unit which the plug did, this was clearly the side light circuit.

Have just checked and rear fog lights do work fine.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

Cheers hope passes, its a friends garage so should be forgiving if only little failures. Only thing i think it may fail on is emissions as everything else is tip top. Not sure the of the ABF with KR head will be any worse on emissions than standard KR but hopefully not, can't see how it would be, same fuelling innit so should be same.

ok that would suggest the fault isnt with the light switch, i assume all the interior lights work ok? also where is the hazard switch, dash or column?

Just to clear up RubJohnny you were right the tailgate lights were not working still.

Turned out to be broken wire by the tailgate hinge in the rubber. Luckily MOT guys let me fix quickly (and replace a broken head lamp) and passed the golf HOORAY.

Thanks for help again. Hopefully the golf will give me a weekend off soon, can't handle this weather whilst working outside
