Engine woes
« on: 22 November 2008, 16:21 »
Was on my way to midland vw today as the car has been running crap for a few weeks now. Was about 10 miles away and the engine just died with a nice metal sounding noise.   Managed to get the car home, Engine wouldn't turn over. I removed the cams, the bottom pulley now spins freely so hopfully no bottom end damage. It appears 2 of the valves have bent. I wonder whether the chain on the cam had slipped which is why its been running crap and with me travelling at 60 mph on the motorway the valves have kissed the pistons?. I'm waying up now whether to get a new engine maybe an abf or just repair what ive got.

Gutted for you dude.

It sounds like maybe your cam belt was coming loose or tensioner was worn. New valves and a head refurb won't be too expensive.

Yes can't believe it . Theres a low milage engine on the bay for 299 or best offer??. 116k with s/h very tempted, not too far either. Is this expensive. I would ideally like a 2.0L though, is it worth going for an abf i wonder.

seen this happen on a lot of 16v's   if the valve relifs look shiney it mans the valves have been getting close to pistons for some time.  this is quite good at weakening the piston and deformeing the ring groove  the top ring will most likely be trapped now giveing and it will only be a matter of time before the top of the piston cracks exposeng the top compression ring ,   this is normaly shows a low compression crap running and or  blue smoke.

the cam chin won't have done it,  the exhasut cam is operated by the chain and those valves  are square to the piston.  cambelts don't slip ether unless somethng is very wrong most likely it was timed up wrong at some point,    it dosen't allways develop at the time ether.

Don't buy a motor unless you can check it over while running first.

An engine bought non-running isn't worth a bag of Space Raiders because of the problems that may lie within it.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Take your head off first before you go buying. Although it looks bad, it may not be as bad as you think. If the piston has a hole in it, then its game, set and match. But if its only marked, then perhaps just a head job is needed. There are so  many engines that have been scrapped that to be honest are salvageable, its just the owners choose the easy way out, and buy a second engine, of which there is usually no history or warranty. At least with your engine, you know what you got!
If you do buy an another engine, then see if you can hear it run first, if possible to a compression test. Or drag one out of a smashed car. At least then you know the car is not being broken or scrapped due to a possible dodgy motor.

can allways be cheekey,  find another kr bottom end that someone has ditched because of a 2.0 upgrade  and nick the pistons and rods, then just hone the bores and drop the "new" pistons in with block still inplace
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

My mechanical skills arn't great, so would probbably struggle fiddling with the bottom end. Taking the head off and dropping a new engine in isn't a problem. The millege on my car is now 179,000 so i'm probably going to get a new engine. This is the one on the bay that I have been looking at. Ive emailed him and it has vw service history untill 1997, then mots until 2007 when it was taken out of a damaged car. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400009180980&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123

Right just messaged him. He can do me the clocks with 116k on them and the engine for £300. Does this seem about right. :undecided:
