Hi, we (Dan & Sam) own a MKIII (1996) Golf GTi 8-Valve, Engine Code AGG, Transmission Code DFQ. Recently the clutch cable lost it's clips that hold it on the clutch arm, bought new cable and clips, (auto adjust type), had fun getting cable fitted, but the car drove ok. Two things really, firstly when I looked on my Elsawin Disc (V.A.G. Tech CD Rom) it read that to check correct operation of auto adjuster the clutch arm should move approx 10mm when pushed downwards. Well, everytime I try this the arm moves down loads, pulling the auto adjust cable together, then locking it when arm allowed to return to rest position. However, the main (and probably most serious) problem is an ever increasing worn bearing noise when vehicle moving! I've raised the vehicle and on turning the N/S/F wheel by hand, there is a dreadful noise coming from the area of the differential. Ah, I thought, it's the diff bearings, 'til I looked further on Elsawin to find the driveshafts have bearings in the end nearest the differential! I spoke to my source for VW spares (he's brilliant, little strange, but he's got all ages of VW / Audi scattered about a huge field in rural Suffolk....anyway...) and he says it's not common for the diff bearings to act this way, but he's unsure if it could be driveshafts. Does anyone have any ideas pls? This MKIII has been nothing but trouble, I bought it for £325 as a non-runner (the imfamous MKIII relay / immobiliser gremlins) knowing it was immobilised, so a cheap motor all round, but it went through a phase of burning out relays 30 and 167 ( ECU & Fuel Pump), it then decided it didn't want to pump fuel anymore, that was great fun, opening up the fuel tank. Since replacing the fuel pump the fuel gauge has been suspect, the car no longers starts "on the button" and the pump buzzes occassionally. It needs the rear wheel bearings and rear axle bushes sorting, it's on my list of "to do's". I bought it for my better half (Sam), but now she's getting bored, wants a VR6! Don't suppose it has anything to do with the fact that another parent at our daughters school has one, and roars it about everytime we see her!!! Fingers crossed someone can help with these strange noises, thx in advance!
