Engine troubles ??? HELP ME PLSE

Hi people,,

Well i have just had a new starter motor put in along with a new thermo which has cured the heating problem I had but not starting problem im still having as the car takes about 5 -10 seconds to turn unless i out my foot on the pedal but when it starts then there is a heavy smell of petrol. unless i keep the key turned which will eventually make the car start.

Another issue im having is that when im driving the car steady it starts to judder between 1500 -2.5000rpm in any gear this happens but this does not happen all the time as when im driving faster the car is fine, however i have noticed the rev counter going bezerk at times and then dropping dead with the water light flashing on 3-4 trimes and off then the speedo sometimes returns to normal,, i cant figure this out peope I need some serious help the car is drving me mad,, I have also replaced the ISV thinking that it will solve the wondering revs problem but this has not helped either..

Other than the things we discussed on MSN, when you had the engine transplant did you use your existing ECU? Some people have had all sorts of weird problems - replaced the ECU and everything worked perfectly!! Especially after all the work you've had done so far.

Probably best you spend 10 - 15 minutes and explain the whole situation on here so 'we' can try and give you some proper help .....

Ok Peeps here goes as i have spoken to Dave Hawkins he is aware of the whole scenario ill explain it for those that dont!!

First I had allot of problems with the engine therefore I had to get it replaced i got hold of a Digifan engine out of a f reg GTI and got it put in, but this is when it all started the engine went in fine but the daft mechanic couldnt get it started so he thought he would be clever and  took all the relays out as he didnt know what he was doing.
so then i took it to a so called VW specialist in peterborough where i live, for him to do the final checks i,e make sure the wirning is right put the relays back in and that he did the checks to see if the engine was in fine and it was so mechanically it was meant to be fine. He advised me that the relay has burnt out so he arranged to get it rebuilt (I had one at home but he wouldnt use it calling it second hand) so he got it rebuilt and put all the realys back in and got the car finally started,, charged me arm n leg just for that and i have had the problems which I have been speaking to you people about since i took the car off them,i.e revs wondering, wierd engine noise, Yet still im getting wondering idles and dodgy pick up on the car,,, i dont know what it is please can you guys /girls help

To add to that ... all the dizzy, plugs, static timing, ignition timing, ISV have been checked.

He's confident there's no vacuum leaks and the coolant temp sensor is ok - so not really much else apart from a dodgy air flow meter or ECU perhaps

The car was fine before the engine transplant, but I can't comment on what's be retained from the previous engine. And the 2 mechanics involved are playing 'pass the parcel' with the blame !

you sure that the engine that went in is good? is the head gasket ok. if it was replaced and new bolts not used then that could cause it.

have you had a compression test to make sure the cylinders are ok?

are you getting a spark at all revs across the range? is it a strong spark?

is the timing right? on digis it should be retarded 6 degrees from tdc i think

is the fuel pressure regulATOR OK?

this could be down to one component or problem causing this or a few dodgy things causing a multitude of problems

i would reset everything to vw tolerances (timing etc) and then go from there

hello people,,

The car is now fine the whole problem worked out to be a dodgy setting for the dizzy,, however getting pass this i now have a dead rev meter,, the speedo section all works however now when turning the ignition the battery only comes on and not the oil and water lights as they did before but the wierd thing is that they do sometimes work what can this be related to the ISV is fine the revs dont bounce like mad when it is working ,, the whole MFA system is dead when the revs are not working,, please can you advise what this can be related to,,  PLEASE

Check the brown earth wire that is fitted to the rear of the rocker cover, this is critical for the dash operation.
