Sump Gasket?
« on: 02 June 2004, 22:22 »
Was considering using flushing oil as well at this service, hasn't been done for a few years!! Tell me how to do it? Then i considered that i'd change my sump gasket too. Do i need to do both? Which leads to... How do i get the sump off to change the gasket, and how much is a gasket?

flusher. You pour it in with the oil on a warm engine and run it for about 20mins or so. You will find that alot of smoke comes out of the exhaust.

Think its done like that ::) (my dad does it for me)

After the time is up...drain the f**kker and fit new oil/oil filter. :)

sump gaskets...cheap as chips ive heard. few bolts enit?

Cool. It used to get flushed every time, but..... I looked on german and swedish and its ?4. Cheap enough i guess. I would have thought it was a few bolts, but in the haynes manual it says about removing the steering on the right, and something to do with the exhaust??! Was hoping someone else had done it!

I take it the gasket is leaking?
The sump unbolts, simple as that. There are 2 bolts that hold a transmission plate that need to removed to access the last few bolts, these can be a pain , so make sure you have a long extension bar.
It is only necessary to remove the exhaust front pipe on lower engine models, 1.3 only on a golf mk2, as exhaust is further back on all other models.

My golf is a 1.3 Does that mean its hard for me to do? I think its leaking, well seaping gently! Theres oil around it but i guess it could be coming from somewhere else?

On the 1.3, just unbolt the front pipe from the manifold and push it out of the way, you might need to disconnect the front exhaust hanger as well, but you won't need to remove the whole section.
I would give it a good clean up first, that will help you decide where the oil is coming from.

Sounds mostly easy enough, i think! How long should i set aside to do this? Also, if i change the sump, obviously i'd clean it thoroughly on refitting, would i still need to flush it?

Set aside a morning to do it.
I would use flusher prior to draining the oil.

Check the sump for holes, seen a lot of corroded sumps. Will need a new one if it is porous (sp?).
