Thinking back to my rebuild. Depends on your definition of recondition.
If you get the block rebored and new piston heads, then as long as your buying off the shelf .25mm and .5mm oversize piston heads, you should be under ?300. If you have uneven wear and need to go 1mm oversize, then you wont see much change from ?500.
Not sure how much the main bearings cost. Not much though. They ought to be redone at the very least.
Then you get onto the head - new valve followers cost around ?16 each, and you'll need 16, no point in doing things by half. Cam chain ?40 if VAG Counter part.
If your cams are okay - then you are lucky. You need to check for wear.
If you are unlucky with cams, VAG replacement parts are 300 and 700 respectively for the two cams. At which point 3rd cams are a cheaper choice, or find a destroyed 16v to nab them from.
On top of that you need a grease monkey to do all the work.
If you go third party parts then you can save money. But then you are taking that small risk in quality.
