VR6 AUTO HIGHLINE into a MKII16v ? possible?
« on: 18 November 2008, 23:23 »
thinking of investing in one, but was also considering taking out the engine (sorry, paying someone to do that) basically would the engine suite as a donor and could be converted to manual transmission? im assuming the auto engine will have less stress on it through out its life... seen a nice highline, but its an AUTO but hey, if the price is right!!!, now seems a good time to buy

No reason why you couldn't put a manual gearbox on, even if it had an automatic in the donor car.
(My mate has got a V8 engine in his Landrover that came from an automatic Range Rover, and just swapped the box over)

The main considerations are then finding a decent manual VR6 gearbox. And how much extra time and money it will take.
You'd probably take the gearbox off during the conversion process anyway, so you could swap it at that point.

Oh the other thing is what you do about the clutch, (someone correct me if I'm wrong) Mk2's are cable clutch and the VR6 is hydraulic, so you need to work out how you're going to accommodate that, ie do you change the pedal box for a Mk3 hydraulic item ?

Who on earth 'invests' in a boat anchor VR6, unless it's for tax-loss reasons?!

A conversion from auto to manual will be utter ballache, as the ECU will control a lot of the auto functions and if the auto box is missing it will likely throw a complete hissy fit when it's powered up.

Plus you'd need to find all manner of ancillary parts that will push the complete price up well past the cost of getting a complete manual set up and nailing that into the front of a Golf2.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

so a mint black highline auto 3door with 90k and pristine leather interior for a grand isnt good then?

was just a consideration, im sick of looking for a low mileage 16v mk2 engine, and would rather be in my mk2 than my mk3, despite the mk3 being fault free and rock solid the entire time ive had it....

If the MK3 is in such good condition, keep using it as is. It's a pitty (it is DH  ) to ruin a perfect MK3 VR6 and waste of money on your behalf. You could pick up a manual VR6 lump cheaper for the conversion and then you have 2 VR6's :afro:

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

If you can get it for a grand go for it but keep it as it is.

Oh come on, it'd make the fuel bills for your auto look like small change!

You REALLY want that?
