EEK for trouble!!! Help Please!
« on: 16 November 2008, 19:36 »
Well, after asking for advice on which HT spark combo's and dizzy replacement, it appears that the old gal is suffering again with the PAS.  It appears that when i turn the wheel it causes a shudder and squeal from under the bonnet as though the PAS pump is knackered...now I know it ain't as it was replaced less than 1000 miles ago. :undecided:

Can the tension in the belt make that much difference??  It just seems that its worse if the car is not given any rev's (if that makes sense)???  If you give the throttle a blip whilst turning at low speed its less noticable.  I'm worried bout tightening it further as the actually pulley wheel snapped last time and had to be replaced with a visit to the stealership for the part.

Sounds like the tension could be the problem, mine does it now and then due to the fact that I fitted a slightly longer belt just to get it to fit and mine to is better when the revs are lifted !

Check the deflection in the belt - I think it should be between 5mm and 10m, but check first as I'm not 100%.

5mm to 10meters? bit of a wide range there
if belt deflection is ok (i go for 5mm usually) then check the pullies, if they look a bit pollished give em a good rough up and see where that gets you.

Hehe, I couldn't remember - I always worry that I might fook someones engine up with bad advice, hence the "check first" caveat!

Conker I'll remember that!!!  Always double check and get a second opinion from conker's posts LOL!

The belt is brand new as it was replaced at the same time as the pulley...and the pump as I said originally.  Belt was okayish to begin with and as its gone on its getting worse...

I presume by deflection we are talking tension?  The pretensioning screw doesn't have much left to go tho?! :undecided: so unsure how to tighten it up further...proper belt as well as the first one was a bloody fan belt so checked the VW parts code and got another!

Anything other than that guys?

haynes recons 10mm deflection is ok half way between crank n pas pulley, so have a shufti.  the mk2 tensioning system is horrible though, that T bolt especially often ends up broke or bent.
as i say though, check the pulleys for polishing and give em a good rough up if they're a bit shiny lookin :)

its either that or replace the rack ;)
