8V GTI Throttle Body Cleaning Tutorial Anyone?

i have gone from averaging 30-40mpg (on long journeys) to 23/23.1 no matter where i go or no matter how long i drive, some of you guys have advised me that the throttle body is a good place to start (and making it spotless/imaculate) just wondering if anyone had any idiot proof pictures, or a guide?

sometimes when i down shift (say, approaching lights) the engine stalls (power steering cuts, immobalizer steps in, and i have to start the engine moments later, really f"%$"king annoying, my mk2 used to do it also........doesnt seem to happen when the car is hot, any help would be appreciated ;]

Mine AGG 8v used to do this all the bloody time.

I cleaned the throttle body and cured the stalling straight away.

Get some carb cleaner from your local motor factors or Halfrauds if your that way inclined 

Pull away the oil breather pipes from the induction pipe and then disconnect the induction pipe from the throttlebody (you'll need a set of pliers to clamp the clip together that holds the pipe onto the throttle body) Then get yourself a rag and spray some carb cleaner into the throttlebody making sure you try and clean all around the butterfly valve, use the rag to wipe away any excess liquid. I also sprayed some carb cleaner into the throttle body with the valve held open with a spanner (don't know if this is advised though) Put everything back together and fire the bad boy up. You'll notice it start a lot more crisply, now take it for a thrash to let everything settle.

This is only the quick way to cure stalling - Its recommended to take off the throttle body and to strip and clean it properly - when i get some new tools I'll be doing this on mine.

superb mate, the staling isnt a major issue, as its only if the car isnt allowed time to warm up (and if i keep the revs high its fine)

so will this cure the p1ss poor fuel consumption?

Exact same as mine then - when warm it didn't stall and as long as revs were held high it wouldn't cut out, with regard to fuel consumption I dunno mate - I mean how much do you trust these electronic read outs anyway? - I don't think I do really............

Its a tough call as I don't get fantastic MPG readouts but my fuel when full to the brim seems to last over a week nearly two with doing a commute every day in traffic and nipping out and about.

I reckon taking the throttle body off completely and doing the full clean might help the MPG, after all this is where the "magic" happens and if its all choked up with coke then it prob would affect MPG mate.

im thinking i might aswell fit a k&n induction mushroom kit (or whatever its called) while im at it.

i do trust my mpg read out, i once did squeeze 40mpg out of my car, (on a journey i do quite often, to visit family in Lanark, bout 1hr drive) so the last time i tried it, car was having none of it, 23mpg all the way, unless the mfa is faulty but i seriously doubt it

does your (or anyone elses) use any oil at all? it seems as though in never needs any oil, ive only filled it once since ownership (nearly 1yr)

might just throw it in for a service,

Mine doesn't use any oil - to be fair not using any oil is a good thing.

I wouldn't put an induction kit on unless its a completely sealed unit - you don't want it to just be sucking hot air in as your MPG will be even LOWER. I suppose you could attach a cold air feed, but still I'd just stick with a panel filter.

im just surprised is all, my mk2 used to need oil all the time.....so i was always concious about that, mk3 seems pretty bullit proof

i was going to opt for the cold air feed thing, it is a bit boring to drive tho

you fitted any front and/or rear braces? and does it significantly improve handling? i would like to get coil overs but cost atm is a factor

I'm planning on dropping her though, got so much I want to do to it but money comes in to it at the end of the day.

Want to get my exhaust running properly first, seems to be blowing from everywhere!!

as for your mpg. if it hasnt had one for a while id give it a damn good service before trying anything major. most likey one of your filters

mine does the same  ive used carb cleaner a few times now and it only seems to sort it out as a temp, lasts about a week or so. id be interested to know how the clean out goes and wheither it fixes it for a while, keep it update on here if you dont mind  :smiley
mine will be getting serviced on the weekend, i'll let you know if that helps the start up/cut out problem on low revs. On top gear last night they managed to get there project from 157bhp to 205bhp just from a good service! certainly made me wonder.

as for the mpg, surely it will drop if you introduced an induction kit?
