very loud fuel pump
« on: 02 June 2004, 09:56 »
my fuel pump is very loud, I can hear it whining away when there's quarter of a tank in the car. does this mean it's about to give up?

always used to hear the pump on my 16v when I was about to run out of gogo juice but not normally.....?

how much does a fuel pump cost? are they difficult to replace? do I need to drop the fuel tank out?

cheers for any responses :)

The pump bearing is probably on the way out.
What pump have you got? inline or in tank?
The in tank pump comes out of the top of the fuel tank. Look in your boot, lift up the carpet, there will be a round cover with 3 screws, remove the screws, take off the cover , then unscrew the big plastic cap, you will then be able to remove the pump.

hello mate,

If I've got this right then the inline pump wouldbe under the car on the offside?

In that case I have an intank pump as the noise is definately coming from the boot!

Can you change the bearing or do you need to change the pump?

Cheers for your help vr6.

I don't know if you can change the bearing, ask richandhazel or mk1.
The inline pump would be on the o/s/r, so it does sound like you got the intank one.

i have a similar problem and it is when im low on fuel. Mine sounds like its coming from the fuel injection underneath the drivers side door, is there a way to solve this easily??

If the pump only whines when the tank is low, it might be because it is struggling to suck up all the sh!t off the bottom of tank.
Try some redex the next time you fill up with fuel.
