Does the GTI have a boost gauge?
« on: 13 November 2008, 13:11 »
I was just wondering if the GTI has a boost gauge since I was in my mate's GT and noticed that it had one in the dash, but looking at some dash pics here I can't see one.

No, the Mk5 GTI does not have a boost guage - A bit silly really.

There are aftermarket ones available.

Yeah it is a bit silly really.
Is that the OSIR vent gauge? Or is that other brand whose name I can't remember? New South or something?

....Joe has the OSIR vent + Defi gauge. Looks less stock but is good having an angled display.

Mine is a Newsouth Indigo and exactly matches the stock VW displays. It's still totally visible though not angled.

Your mate's car must be the 1.4TFSI as these have boost gauges

....I don't think they actually give the psi and vacuum values numerically   - So what's the point?

My Saab has one, apart from abit of fun it serves not purpose whatsoever.  Guess you would notice lower boost reading as time goes by and the turbo/engine wears.

No it's just a needle with blocked increments and no numbers    Just a gimmick I suppose :afro:

....Is your Saab's gauge like the Golf GT and without numeric values?

By giving you approximate but not extremely accurate numerical readings, a psi gauge will give you much more clue about what is happening and therefore encourage you to check out a sudden difference more thoroughly via data logging or similar. Obviously if you have a more major boost loss you should feel it when driving.

Having experienced a boost leak, though a minor one, I'm glad I've got mine and that it displays numeric values.
