immobiliser
« on: 12 November 2008, 20:50 »
did 1984 gti's come with an immobiliser as standard? The reason i ask is, one of the chips was stolen, that came with the car, and want to know if it possible to order a new one from vw?

Thanks

That could make more sense, one of the two chips that i have to insert was stolen.  I would like another spare one, but do not know if it is an aftermarket immobiliser. The chip is inserted below and to the right of my steering wheel. There is no indication of the product make on the key i have left. It just has silver foil texture that is peeling off.

thanks

Immobilser, doubt it was factory fitted somehow back in 1984, even most TV/video remotes were still on a lead back then.

But then who knows.  I did have an immobiliser on a 1976 Porsche I had a few years ago, was a big box slung under the dash with dial numbers on, so you dialled the code in pressed a couple of buttons, like on a briefcase and off you drove.  Was called 'The Ungo Box'

as long as the company that manufactured it are still in business you should be able to get a replacement chip
but you also need the programming instructions to delete the old chip and reprogram a new one
if they are not still going then i would reccomend removing the old one and get a replacement

this is a really neat job, to the extent it looks standard, but if you dont have them I guess otherwise. Its irritating. as there are no clues as to who has made it.

i could upload a picture of the chip that i have, but the odds of anyone recognising it are slim?
