need advice on an alarm
« on: 12 November 2008, 18:16 »
Hey guys. Ive been looking at the insurance quote for the 16v im getting and insurance is £200 less if it has an alarm.
Now, i would buy a £60/70 alarm and stick that in there, but ive been told that for the insurance to accept alarms they must be thatcham cat 1 for it to be valid, if not they dont make the discount.
How much and where from can i get a decent alarm? ive been looking at the clifford ones but they seem pretty pricey. anyone recommend a place in/near bournemouth or southampton that would fit a cat 1 alarm without emptying my wallet?

For a CAT1 alarm you're looking at around £200+ for the alarm and install. The Insurance company WILL require the certificate so don't blag them when getting quotes and using the quote ref to get the cover otherwise they will only cancel the policy if you don't provide the certificate.

There was a dude on here (check the sales sections) who sold and fitted CAT1 alarms and was a certified techie to do the job.

hmmmmmm. not really worth spending £300 ish to save £200 :undecided
maybe il stick a cheaper alarm in there and pay the extra 200. i will be paying monthly, so it wll spread out.

But then along comes year two of paying your insurance and you've spent £400 extra on insurance, £100 more than the alarm. Then year three and so on...

Plus, you will actually have an alarm on the car, so a) err... less likely to get stolen and b) remote closure, other gadgets etc.

Some insurers wouldn't even insure a 16v at all unless its got an alarm (e.g. Direct Line - my insurers), so you'll be cutting down the insurance quote pool available to you if you don't get one fitted.

when i insured mine i had a guess at the model number on mine as i dont have certificate for alarm and then insurance asked for proof of alarm and as i dont have this i had to insure as no alarm installed or pay £200 for a cat1 alarm so i opted for no alarm fitted and it should have cost me £30 but didnt ?
other than alarm ask insurance if an immobilizer is sufficient as you should get a decent one for not a great deal of money
