immobilizer problem
« on: 12 November 2008, 16:43 »
I’m having problems starting my Swedish sold 88 GTI. I have replaced the battery and done some checks on the ignition & fuel delivery system, which is all OK. So now I’m thinking it could be an immobilizer problem . When I bought the car the immobilizer was deactivated and I have never attempted to use it. I have the 7 digit code but this doesn’t seem to work and I’m not sure if I am entering the code in the right way.
There is a small red LED on the keypad which remains red after I enter the code.
Here is a picture of the unit:

Is there a re-set code for the unit?

What is the procedure for entering the code? Do I just enter the code or do I need to press a button to confirm after the 7th digit is entered?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi mate,

I had a problem with my immobiliser a couple of months ago and it became a real pain, so I had it all ripped out and had a new cobra one put in.

The fuel pump circuit went down on mine (The immobiliser cut it off but wouldnt let it come back on) however for what its worth Id try a auto electrical place first then maybe go for a new unit.

The problem is like mine I had a scorpion unit before but after a fair few years it becomes very hard to get parts and advice etc so you find yourself chasing information that unfortunately leeds to the result of replacing it anyway

However I must say I am glad I had mine fitted, peace of mind really

What happens when you turn the key??  Do the lights on the dash come on 2nd turn? Could well be the ignition switch... if you havnt already checked it.  Run a wire from the battery+ to the solenoid on the starter.. if it starts the that'll be the problem.  Ben

When i turn the key the lights on the dash come on and the small LED on the unit is red.
The engine turns over but just won't start.
