Had to drive the rest of the journey after refilling with water using the clutch as little as possible tho

should have just bypassed the matrix by connecting the two hoses together til you got it fixed... silly.

Yea, thought of that after i got home  used that fix until I changed the matrix.

Thread on here shows how to replace matrix. Good tip about unbolting heater controls. I followed Haynes manual and disconnected on heater box, now they dont move very well

If I can do this anyone who can recognise one end on a spanner from the other can. Even a numpty like me did it in under six hours, maybe less if I followed the guide above

yep, 3.5 hours all in, would have been quicker if I had junked the haynes

dash left in, front seats out for easier up side down access

Heater control issues  :undecided: dunno, 3 cables off, 3 back on .

Cheers for the sympathy guys, its taken me 4 hours, dash in seats out to replace the matrix with a Mk3. Not too bad a job just unclipping the heater box was hard with my sausage fingers, but all done and lovely and toasty!!

Guys if I replace the matrix with one from gsf do I need to get new bypass valves? If so can I get them from vw?

you can do away with the bypass valve with the later matrix, ask gsf for the pipes to delete it
