1 question first...have you ever driven the volvo R before?  if so then fair enough but if not I think you should. Also dont go auto/tip cos they are garbage,  manual is the best and the g/box can handle some good power. Rica do a remap for the R which takes it from 250 to 310bhp it also uses the same haldex system has the R32 but doesn't feel any where has grippy has the Golf R.

The Volvo R will do approx 26-28mpg and the sound track is near on the R32 v6 with a little bit of scooby thrown in  You really need to go on the Volvo.org forum and speak to some ppl over there cos the volvo does suffer from some bad niggles i.e instrument cluster problems, wheel bearings, a/c, etc, etc.  The only other thing I would say is go for the V70R rather than the S60.  Or just keep the golf and get some recaro erganomic(sp) seats or the similar one to the older S3 I think they are the recaro trend?

Sorry about the long post but you will be sadly dissapointed at the newer volvo's stick with your golf.

Cheers for this although the Volvo S60R is actually a 300 bhp car and tuneable to 450 bhp, remap will take it to around 350. Volvo have revised the haldex system for the 2007 model which this is and also uprated the geartronic to 6 speed and removed the torque limit after the 3rd gear, so now its only down a second on the manual and just as tuneable.

I love my golf to bits and driving home today through the twisty roads just proved how much of an accomplished car it is.

The only issue I have is doing the mileage isn't helping my back,.....but then whatever car I have I might have the same problem.

All I know is that this is the last S60R that has had all the adjusments done to improve on everything as the early ones were crud,...

I'm hoping someone else will just buy the Volvo and that way the decision is made for me!!

Then again, I only have to look out the window at my ed30 and after just 1 second I think, what the F*ck, stick with the Golf you nob!!!

If you have a long back and broad shoulders the GTI seats are poor.  They curl your shoulders forward and can give a stiff shoulder unless perfectly set-up.

Volvo seats are just superb, but the cars are as boring as Audis.

I would seek further advice to be sure, Volvo is ok but would try and stay with the Golf if you could.

Hi

I can't comment on the Volvo's seats as I haven’t driven one but I can tell you that I have a MkV Gti and a Saab 9-5 Aero.

My Wife suffers with a bad back she has a condition called AS.

We went to Scotland on two consecutive years once in my old Mercedes C230 and then in the Saab and in the Merc we had to stop about every hour because it was setting her back off but in the Saab we only really stopped to refuel, it didn’t effect her back at all.

Also this year I drove to Italy in the Golf.

I would say the Golf has comfortable Seat's for the type of car it is but the Saab Is a lot more comfortable but it is also a very different Car big cruiser vs. hot hatch.

I must say, I do think the Golf is extremely comfortable if the seats fit you....I am a little broader than most and do find the seats can sometimes be a little uncomfortable after a long drive but that is more me than anything.

The GTI seats do have back and lumbar support so why not play with some of those settings.  Often it can be your driving position that is leading to your back problems, rather than the seats themselves.  Raise the back up perhaps, sit closer/further away from the steering wheel.  change the height of you seat.  All can affect the ergonomics of your driving position. The steering wheels adjusts too ;-)

I find that after a long drive I slouch into the seat and this is my fault.  So my lower back hurts.  But recently, I bring the back of the chair slightly forward and change a few other settings until I am feeling supported.  Makes a massive difference.

I can often be in the car for 5-6 hours a day and often sitting in traffic, gives me moments where I play with stuff (ooo eer missus)....and find that adjusting my seat to the "optimum" driving position really makes a difference.

If you have tried every setting/position then perhaps changing cars is the right thing to do....but a Volver.... ;-)

Terry, one answer to this............................

Keep the Edition30!!!!!!
The Doctors no nothing reference back problems!!!. Your Gut feeling always knows best . Like has been said, have a play around with the lower

lumber support.

Your not the size of a artic lorry, your not too big to fit the seats wise. Go see a decent Chiropractor, preferably a Blonde/brunnette, that likes

rubbing massaging oils into your back for £30 a session . Done by back a world of good when i put mine out a while ago. In my job

as you can imagine working on ladders, my back HAS to be good.

Sorry Telboy I dont know what I was thinking about...of course the S60R is 300bhp i had my head under the bonnet of an old s70R for some reason  any way yes I had to borrow a v70r not so long ago when my focus st225 whas in for service, the car was my mates and it was the tiptronic model, although it was remapped by BSR.

The car felt special to be in especially with the cluster its not lit from the back so at night when the lights come on the dash cluster is lit by 2-3 leds shining on the dials. looks really good. My daughter kept watching Simpson on the TV/satnav.  I would have one tomorrow if it wasn't for the fact the wife doesn't like volvo's
